Lijadu Sisters | Danger | Danger | DWAPS2002 | 1976 | The Lijadu Sisters were a Nigerian singing duo consisting of identical twins Kehinde Lijadu (died 9 November 2019) and Taiwo Lijadu , who combined the genres of Afrobeat, funk, reggae, disco and Memphis soul. They were active from the mid-1960s to the early 1980s. With the assistance of multi-instrumentalist and producer Biddy Wright, the Lijadu Sisters would make four albums for Decca's Afrodisia imprint: 1976's Danger, 1977's Mother Africa, 1978's Sunshine, and 1979's Horizon Unlimited. These vibrant collisions of pop, reggae, and Afro-beat influences defined the sisters' unique hybrid sound and rocketed them to immense popularity in Nigeria, as well as gaining them the attention of a broader audience internationally. | 0:09:42 (Pop-up)
K. Flay | Blood In The Cut | Every Where Is Some Where | Interscope | 2017 | ""Oh, the women that inspire me! (smiles) On a personal level, it’s the women in my life, that I’m close with that inspire me. My mum, my sister, my sister in law, my best friends, many of whom I had for like 20 years. I have many, very long and intense friendships which are super important to me, that chosen family. These are people who always encourage me to stand up for myself, to be honest, authentic and unselfconscious in the world. Accompanied by Indian, Arabic, African, Russian and Australian traditional instrumentation, the quartet’s astonishingly powerful and uncompromising vocal range creates a trans-national sound rooted in Ukrainian culture. |

Solex | Mere Imposters | Low Kick And Hard Bop | Matador | 2001 | "Named after a small, Hungarian-made motor scooter, Solex is the project of Amsterdam-based record-shop owner and songwriter Elisabeth Esselink. Formerly a member of Dutch indie pop group Sonetic Vet, Esselink wanted to express her musical ideas more completely; after purchasing an 8-track recorder and a vintage sampler, Esselink began recording songs on her own. Combing the racks of her own store for kitschy records, Esselink took snippets of old records to make new ones, creating her own style of lo-fi techno-pop." Ill Ease | Here Comes Trouble (To The Tune Of Pretty Woman) | The Whole Sha-Bang! (7") | Parlour Records | 2009 | "A one-woman band created by Elizabeth Sharp. Sharp was born in Maryland on December 14, 1971. A neurological disorder that caused her brain to read music as pleasure led Sharp to learn several instruments in her teen years. After playing in several bands, she had a memorable stint with New Radiant Storm King as a drummer. She relocated to New York City, shared a practice space with a friend with recording equipment, and started getting notices for her photography. She also began recording herself, mostly by her lonesome out of convenience, but also because she didn't want anyone else involved, anyway. So, Sharp became the sole member of Ill Ease." | 0:33:11 (Pop-up)
Gudrun Gut | Move Me | I Put A Record On | Monika Enterprise | 2007 | "Gudrun Gut’s story spans many years, scenes, and sounds, from the “ingenious dilettantes” subculture of early 1980’s Berlin as part of Mania D, Einstürzende Neubauten, and Malaria! to Matador into an expansive solo catalog of later work. Her talents extend beyond musician, however, to include founding record labels (the influential imprints Moabit Musik and Monika Enterprise), radio presenter and producer together with Thomas Fehlmann (10 years Oceanclub Radio for RadioEins), club nights (progressive electronic pop collective Oceanclub), festival curation (with Fehlmann/Meteo on MarkeB, or now UM-Festival) and the recent experimental feminist collaborations (Monika Werkstatt). Projects have included collaborations with Antye Greie (AGF) and Hans-Joachim Irmler of Faust, participating on the advisory committee for Musicboard Berlin, since 2016 part of the artist funding jury of Initiative Musik DE, performing at The Royal Albert Hall with Âme as part of an Innervisions label night. 2018/9 new celebrated solo album MOMENT with concerts in Saudi Arabia, China, Russia, Spain, Romania, France and Germany. 2019 she received the ‘Listen to Berlin Award’ for development and support of the Berlin musicscene. 2021 publishing of the Book “M_DOKUMENTE” (Ventil Verlag) together with Beate Bartel and Bettina Köster which was launched by an exhibtion and record release “M_Sessions” in Berlin at Silent Green – all about Mania D., Malaria!, Matador." "Ana da Silva is a founding member and songwriter of pioneering post-punk band The Raincoats. Across four albums, The Raincoats helped shape the timeless notion that punk is what you make it to be – an act of raw expression, not any one sound. They set a crucial precedent for feminist work within a DIY punk context, marked all the while by Ana’s poetic lyrical style and innovative noise guitar playing." Solo project from Hamilton Ontario. "Using guitar, loops, synths and pedals Anne Sulikowski creates unique sonic palettes ranging from textured dronescape to melodic granular swirls, stretched, reverberated, quietly twisted then modulated with love, fueled by a vivid imagination, thought disorder and an addiction for wandering.... ...Anne Sulikowski is a multi media artist who works in film, photography, textiles, upscaling and painting. As a photographer, she drives around aimlessly and takes thousands of photos. She focuses mainly on rural photography, however, she can often be seen on photo shoots in an urban alleyway near you. Anne also makes films and creates music videos under the name “castle clips”. Her videos have been shown at the Queering Sound Festival in Washington, DC and at Mutek Electronic Festival in Montreal, Quebec. Currently Anne works as a psychiatric nurse specializing in forensic psychiatry, and yes, she still spends pretty much all of her time daydreaming, recording and wandering." Equipped with a small, yet powerful assembly of analog synthesizers, she crafts retro-futuristic cosmic exotica inspired by the strange sounds of the synth pioneers that forged electronic music. The eerie yet comfortingly familiar echoes of lounge and library music shaped into a dream of the future. Forrest has appeared on bills alongside artists such as Hans-Joachim Roedelius, Faust, Silver Apples, U.S. Girls, and Julianna Barwick. In the last five years, she has released four full length albums and is currently scoring her sixth original soundtrack." Castle If Webpage /// Castle If - Bandcamp /// Castle If - Youtube |

Lena Platonos | What's New Pussycat? | Galop RE | Dark Entries | 2015 | ‘Γκάλοπ’ (‘Gallop’) was Lena Platonos' second record that she solely composed, produced and sang. The record was released in 1985 and paved the way for Greek electronica of the 1990's. ‘Gallop’ was composed in the wake of a painful separation, and took several months to complete. Lena says, “It’s a study in the mythology of urban population of the contemporary metropolis and also a gaze into the future life of it.” The album is made exclusively using analog synthesizers and heavily features the iconic Roland TR-808 drum machine. Lena narrates each song, reciting her own surreal Greek poetry with unique skill. Lyrics deal with heartbreak, dreams, desires, and astutely predict the way that computers and technology would infiltrate our society in the years to come. ‘Gallop’ is an album ahead of its time, both musically and conceptually. | 0:57:05 (Pop-up)
Grazia | Soyle Beni | Grazia | Koliphone | 1978 | Grazia Peretz, Jaffa, Israel Psychedelic Folk singer, was a young Israeli teen star way ahead of her time in accordance with her unsuccessful debut release, Grazia!, a record now seen as an infamous 70′s musical gem. Resurrected from the dark, Fortuna Records reissue the album in 2013. Recorded when Grazia was only 16, her debut was released through Koliphone Records and, accompanied by keyboard player Marko Bachar, featured a folk foundation fused with many radical Moog synth textures and disco grooves. Due to its outlandish style, it sadly wasn’t popularized at the time. | 1:00:41 (Pop-up)

Karen Anne Carpenter was an American singer and drummer who, along with her elder brother Richard, was part of the duo the Carpenters. With a distinctive three-octave contralto vocal range, she was praised by her peers as one of the greatest singers ever. Her struggle with and eventual death from anorexia would later raise awareness of eating disorders and body dysmorphia. Initially, Carpenter was the band's full-time drummer, but gradually took the role of frontwoman as drumming was reduced to a handful of live showcases or tracks on albums. |

Singer Nora Dean was one of reggae’s greatest mysteries including her birth year which some sources quote as 1952. She recorded solo and as a member of The Ebony Sisters, The Soul Sisters and The Soulettes. She did backing vocals on recordings by Jimmy Cliff. Although she was not a prolific artist (especially by reggae standards), a number of her songs are very fondly remembered by fans of Jamaican music as true reggae classics. No interviews with her have ever been published. Photos seemed to be non-existent. |

Erase Errata | He Wants What's Mine | Nightlife | Kill Rock Stars | 2006 | Membership at this time: Bianca Sparta, Ellie Erickson, Jenny Hoyston. "Erase Errata formed in Oakland, California in 1999 and quickly earned national attention after the release of their first eponymous 7" and via tours with electro grrl band Le Tigre and Japanese noise rockers Melt Banana. They released their highly acclaimed debut album Other Animals in 2001, followed by At Crystal Palace in 2003, both on the Troubleman Unlimited label. The group began counting Sonic Youth, Mission of Burma and The Ex among their fans. After founding guitarist Sara Jaffe left Erase Errata in 2004, singer Jenny Hoyston switched to guitar and the group briefly drafted a male vocalist named Archie McKay. The group eventually settled on a three-piece lineup, with Hoyston handling both guitar and vocal duties, and joined the Kill Rock Stars roster for the 2006 album Nightlife." | 1:22:53 (Pop-up)
The Raincoats | Shouting Out Loud | Odyshape | We 3 | 1981 | Ana Da Silva, Gina Birch & Vicky Aspinall formed the core of The Raincoats, collectively swapping instruments & lyrics. Drummer Palmolive (Paloma Romero) left the group after the debut album & the group briefly replaced her with Ingrid Weiss, who drums on this track. Gina Birch writes: "We auditioned lots of people, until we found Ingrid, who was very young but had a strong powerful style of drumming. At our first meeting she told us she wanted to be a taxidermist, but we didn't let that put us off!" "...The way we structured the songs was always precarious and experimental, using odd time signatures, time changes, slowing down and speeding up. We always enjoyed playing ambitious configurations. If the audience could cope with that, then we were very popular, but many people found this difficult to deal with." | 1:24:22 (Pop-up)

Finally Punk | Missile | Casual Goths | Army Of Bad Luck/Germs Of Youth | 2006 | Finally Punk lineup: Elizabeth Skadden, Erin Budd, Stephanie Chan, Veronica Ortuño. -- This was something I purchased without knowing anything about it. Reasons: 1) A band named "Finally Punk" releasing an album called "Casual Goths" is fantastic. 2) The front cover shows the band laying on top of three washing machines with their feet on the wall & their heads hanging over the front, upside down, looking like they are having a lot of fun (& therefore unlikely to be goths). The back reads: "Self-Titled" "Primary Colors" "Hypertension" "+" "Army Of Bad Luck/Germs Of Youth" "Recorded In Austin Texas / New York". 3) The insert revealed the fact there were 26 songs on the record and that it was compiled over 4 years (2005-2009). 4) The vinyl is lavender-marble, with white cobwebs on the black label. 5) It was affordable. 6) It seemed foolish not to buy this album I had never heard & had no idea about. --- All these observations proved to lead to an excellent choice. | 1:32:40 (Pop-up)
Dishrags | I Don't Love You | Last Call: Vancouver Independent Music 1977-1988 | Zulu Records | 1979 | "Originally known as Dee Dee and the Dishrags... In honour of Dee Dee Ramone... The band was formed in 1976 in Victoria, British Columbia, a city 60 miles from Vancouver, and included the trio of high school students Jade Blade (lead guitar, vocals), Carmen "Scout" Michuad (drums), and Dale Powers (bass guitar). Moving to Vancouver, with its burgeoning punk rock scene, the Dishrags opened for the city's first punk concert, sharing the bill with the Furies at the Japanese Hall on July 30, 1977. The band performed sporadically thereafter while also attending high school in Victoria, and inspired the formation of three other punk female groups, the Visitors, Devices, and Zellots. In 1978, the Dishrags returned to Vancouver where they gave many performances, including a concert at the Commodore Ballroom with the Clash in January 1979... On a dare, The Dishrags encored their set with The Clash's London's Burning; The Clash dedicated their version to The Dishrags. The Dishrags also had the honour of both opening and closing for The Ramones in Seattle. With The Dishrags having opened for Dee Dee and the boys, Joey was too ill to perform so The Dishrags finished the show for them to an appreciative audience... By contributing the song "I Don't Love You", the band made its recording debut on the influential compilation album, Vancouver Complication, in 1979." | 1:33:52 (Pop-up)

Robin Hatch | Water | T.O.N.T.O. | Self-Released | 2021 | We played tracks from this release a number of shows ago, but not this one... ""In February 2021, Toronto-based multi-instrumentalist Robin Hatch was informed of a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to record on the famed T.O.N.T.O synthesizer at the National Music Gallery in Calgary. With only 4 days in the studio to record, Hatch emerged with a halting masterwork that shares a name with it’s progenitor: T.O.N.T.O." "...A very large modular synthesizer originally assembled by Malcom Cecil and Robert Margouleff. (The name is an acronym for "The Original New Timbral Orchestra".) The instrument began as a Moog modular purchases by Margouleff in 1969; he combined it with a second Moog in 1971 to make one larger modular. To this was then added an ARP 2600 and a bank of Oberheim SEM's, and the instrument began to snowball, with Cecil and Margouleff adding nearly anything modular that they could get their hands on, including some modules designed and built by Cecil himself. In 1974, they brought in Rex Probe and a team of people from Serge Modular, who built a number of Serge circuits and mounted them behind Moog-like faceplates, and added them to the system." | 1:41:53 (Pop-up)

Josephine Baker recorded the song in 1958, and it was released on her album Paris Mes Amours. Jamaican singer Phyllis Dillon recorded the song in 1968. Nico | Vegas | To The Outside Of Everything - A Story Of UK Post Punk 1977 - 1981 (v/a) | Cherry Red | 2017 | "Christa Päffgen (16 October 1938 – 18 July 1988), known by her stage name Nico, was a German singer, songwriter, musician, model, and actress. She had roles in several films, including Federico Fellini's La Dolce Vita (1960) and Andy Warhol's Chelsea Girls (1966). At the insistence of Warhol, she sang on four songs of the Velvet Underground's debut album The Velvet Underground & Nico (1967). At the same time, she started a solo career and released Chelsea Girl. Nico's friend, Jim Morrison, suggested that she start writing her own material. She then composed songs on a harmonium, not traditionally a rock instrument. John Cale of The Velvet Underground became her musical arranger and produced The Marble Index, Desertshore, The End... and other subsequent albums. In the 1980s, she toured extensively in Europe, United States, Australia and Japan. After a concert in Berlin in June 1988, she went on holiday in Ibiza to rest and died as the result of a cycling accident." | 1:53:45 (Pop-up)

She composed the score to two Stanley Kubrick films – A Clockwork Orange (1971) and The Shining (1980) – and Tron (1982) for Walt Disney Productions. n 1979, Carlos raised public awareness of transgender issues by disclosing she had been living as a woman since at least 1968, and in 1972 had undergone sex reassignment surgery. |

Nina Simone | Suzanne | To Love Somebody | Sony Music | 1969 | Rather than take the easy route of just belting the number out – or indeed playing the role of the male observer in the song – Simone instead embodies the mystical Suzanne. By doing so, by making the character even more real than we had previously thought, she does the impressive balancing act of adding grandeur to her iconography and weight to her ideals, all the while adding humour at the expense of her adorer. | 2:01:43 (Pop-up) |
