Phono-Comb | I Dreamed I Went To Heaven In My Cross-Your-Heart Bra | Fresh Gasoline | Quarterstick Records | 1996 | Sadly, on the weekend we lost modern-day music legend Dallas Good of modern causes; far too young at 48 years of age. Not sure if the image expressed in this song title is apt, but hopefully he would appreciate the humour of it. Dallas Good (R.I.P. - Coronary Illness) and Reid Diamond (R.I.P. - Cancer) were the guitarists in this project, joined by Breckenridge (bass) and Don Pyle (drums). Reid and Don had made up 2/3 of Shadowy Men On A Shadowy Planet. Beverly had been in Fifth Column. Dallas good had already played in scores of bands; and at that time was had just started what came to be his main project with his brother Travis in the Sadies and his family in the Good Family. Recently he had been playing in the reformed lineup of Shadowy Men On A Shadowy Planet. That is the last time Babs & I saw him. Dallas (and his brother Travis) was the son of Margaret and Bruce Good, and nephew of Brian and Larry Good, who are members of the famous Canadian country group The Good Brothers (still touring to this day). He will be dearly missed & our music scene will never be the same. | 0:01:31 (Pop-up)

"Phono-Comb first materialized when Shadowy Men on a Shadowy Planet played with Jad Fair when he was performing in Toronto to promote a film about his band Half Japanese. Shadowy Men were planning a hiatus around this time, and guitarist Brian Connelly opted out of the planned follow-up recording project (although he is credited as a co-songwriter on all the songs). Don Pyle and Reid Diamond invited Dallas Good of The Sadies to step in, and 'Jad Fair & Phono-Comb' was born. They recorded a single in 1995 and a full-length album, Monsters, Lullabies...and the Occasional Flying Saucer in 1996. After this recording, Fair returned to his solo career, and the remaining trio recorded an instrumental single. In 1996, they added Beverly Breckenridge (of Fifth Column) on bass, and Reid Diamond switched over to guitar. As a quartet, they recorded a CD, Fresh Gasoline with Steve Albini producing. The band toured throughout North America and one of their songs was featured on the soundtrack of the documentary film Pitch. Reid Diamond died of cancer in February 2001." |

The Filthy Gaze of Europe | On Fire | Domestic Accidents 7" | Ugly Pop | 2012 | Project of Don Pyle & Dallas Good. This A-side track features Damian (of Toronto hardcore outfit Fucked Up) and Amanda Schenk, who was Dallas Good's wife. Don Pyle explained how this came to be in an Filthy Gaze Of Europe Interview: I had no choice but to do FGOE with Dallas. I had some tracks that were kind of hardcore but all electronics. I played them for Dallas and he declared "I am in your band", even though there was no band." Front cover design: GB Jones (Fifth Column) | 0:09:24 (Pop-up)
Fifth Column | She Said "Boom" | All-Time Queen Of The World | Hide | 1989 | One of my favourite Toronto bands. There are two record stores named after this song. There is an independent movie made about this band. They had a huge impact on the Queer-core scene, predated Riotgrl, incorporated many indie-media facets & were widely respected. They were also criminally overlooked. Their albums are incredibly hard to find (save for their last album, released on CD on K records.) They were centred around the core of Caroline Azar, Beverly Breckenridge & G.B. Jones. If there is any justice on this earth, this album (and their earlier material) will find its way to the world. I'm not even sure if I would have found my way to the Toronto music scene in the same way were it not for being inspired by them. | 0:11:42 (Pop-up)
Talking Heads | Life During Wartime (Live) | --Unreleased-- / Live At The Heatwave Festival | None | 1980 | A good way to defeat the algorithm is to play something live that has not ever been released. Talking Heads unveiled their expanded Remain In Light lineup at a 1980 festival at Mosport Park, just north of Bowmanville (a little ways outside Toronto.) It was right around the time the album was recorded, and was the first the world was aware of the new direction. This is a famous New Wave festival & there are hundreds of amazing stories about the show (which also featured Hamilton's Teenage Head, B52's, Elvis Costello & The Attractions, et. al. The Clash were also to play, but were unable to make the show.) Some footage exists to be seen: Talking Heads / Elvis Costello & The Attractions excerpts from Heatwave fest | 0:15:31 (Pop-up)

"Selva Obscura" For Dante Corbitt |
? |
? |
2006 |
This is precisely what I am talking about...I have no idea what this is, where it is from, who is involved or what it means to the world at large. It's possible I obtained this 1-track CDr while on tour.) The details are written in black magic marker on the back of the standard-issue white CDr envelope. Music tagging technology identifies it incorrectly as "월광(月光, Moonlight)". [Searching that character string only leads to Beethoven's Moonlight Sonata.] This track was recorded Aug 27, 2006 by John Golter. Doing a search for "Selva Obscura" immediately brought up this: "Accordingly, Dante's "selva oscura" is interpreted in the twentieth century of Freud as a metaphor for nervous depression: themal du siècle. Una selva oscura nella quale Buzzi si ritrovò ben oltre la metà del cammino della sua vita. A shadowed forest in which Buzzi found himself after more than half he journeyed his life." |

Kebab | Life It's A Joke | Life It's A Joke/We Live In A System 7" | Barakkenplaten | 1982 | Punk band from Genk, Belgium. Kebab, a short-lived quartet of punk-minded Belgian youths. Inspired by the Crass Records DIY mentality, the burgeoning UK art-punk scene, and their own boredom, Kebab combined anti-political punk diatribes with sharp guitars, plodding basslines, synth gurgles, and spastic electronic percussion. The result is an aggressively sparse take on post-punk that remains fresh and visceral sounding today. | 0:28:03 (Pop-up)
Terraplanes, The | Evil Going On | Evil Going On 7" | Strange Days | 1981 | Not to be confused with the blues band of the same name! English post-punk group from Wiltshire. Recorded in Corsham in 1981 this single didn't sell well. the also went under the name of "animals and men" | 0:30:47 (Pop-up)
Two By Fours | Another 8 Hours | unknown | Unknown | 1981 | This band does not exist on discogs. Repeated internet searches with all the right keywords only yield pictures of wood plank 2X4s. The Spanish Dogs | Cleveland | Meet the Spanish Dogs (7" EP) | Ruff Ken | 1981 | Sometimes humour in music really works, especially when they're joking about Cleveland. This tune is awesome and therefore does this wonderful city justice! | 0:35:50 (Pop-up)
Student Nurse | Discover Your Feet | Seattle Syndrome Vol. 1 | Engram Records | 1981 | Student Nurse started as the brainchild of married couple John Rogers (drums) Helena Rogers (guitar and vocals) along with bassist Joe Harris and rhythm guitarist Al Davis. In 1979 the band self-released their first single, (“Disco Dog b/w Lies). The songs stood perilously between weirdness and pop-exactly as the band had anticipated. One other song from this line-up was included on the ground-breaking “Seattle Syndrome” compilation released on Engram Records in 1981. By that time Harris and Davis had left the band and the jittery guitar leads of Helena Rogers were accompanied by new members guitarist Tom Boetcher and bassist Eric Muhs. Helena’s vocals were disjointed, pointalist and determined. John’s jazz-influenced drumming and rhythms were the perfect foil to the rest of the band which left the impression the music had fallen on it’s face-in the best possible way. | 0:38:29 (Pop-up)
Mekanik Commando | Microbes | It Would Be Quiet In The Woods If Only A Few Birds Sing RE | Tonefloat | 2010 | inspired by DIY, kraftwerk, magma and two tape recorders the band began as a recording project in 1979. The obscure results appeared on cassettes in small quantities. A strange sound, strange music. Eventually this led to a number of lp's, cassettes and countless gigs . They played the light from their eyes. The inevitable happened and after a few years they disappeared into the void. recorded at home (an apartment on the 9th floor) with two tape recorders and a 6 channel mixer during the summer of 1981. The version presented here is the remastered CD version from 2010 released by Tonefloat. | 0:41:03 (Pop-up)

Network Of Terror | Memo To The Ruling Class | Ohnonosuck - Fall 2005 Sampler | Distroboto | 2003 | The Distroboto system of distribution was invented in Montreal and is a cigarette dispenser machines located in certain venues & repurposed to dispense art for $2 ea. item. Apparently there is one in Paris now, too. I have been & am obsessed with it, often getting several items on every trip I make to Montreal. I even made it my (successful) machine to get a 3" CD of my own band into the machine. This was originally available Monday 26/09/2005 in the Distroboto at Le Divan Orange (4234 St. Laurent, Montreal) More about the machine here: Distroboto.com | 0:55:16 (Pop-up)
The Blankket | Hey Ya! | * Songs Of Love * (3" Single) | Blocks Recording Club | 2003 | No word of a lie, I knew this version before the original. The second song from this 2-song CD single was Love Goes To Building On Fire. Steve Kado was the person behind The Blankket; Owen Pallett joined him on this track. Steve also founded the Blocks Recording Club collective (AKA BlocksBlocksBlocks), which received a considerable funding boost courtesy Owen Pallett, after he won an award. This was the fifth release on the label. This track would also appear on Blocks v/a compilation "Toronto Is The Best!!! Toronto Is Great!!!" | 0:56:14 (Pop-up)

This release possibly never has seen the light of day, it was given to me in one of my encounters with him back in the mid-00's. He has produced hundreds of bands after starting Fun City Studios in 1982. This includes many of New York’s experimental and alternative groups such as Sonic Youth, White Zombie, Swans, Dinosaur Jr., Lunachicks and Glenn Branca. But he is also a musician who plays percussion & drums in his own projects & also with many artists & bands "...Theoretical Girls ...Laurie Anderson... worked independently with many of New York’s then up and coming stars... Eric Bogosian, Ann Magnuson, and Whoopi Goldberg. In addition, Wharton started two groups which played his own compositions, A Band, which disbanded in 1980, and Glorious Strangers, which released a self-titled LP in 1984. Since then Wharton has continued to compose and write many different styles of music, including solo piano, synth based instrumentals, opera, and symphonic works." WhartonTiers.Com |

Вій | Пісня Про Жидів | Хата Скраю Села | Темпора | 2003 | The Artist and Title Translates to Eyelashes - A Song Of The Jews. Ukraine had 840,000 Jews in 1959, a decrease of almost 70% from 1941 (within Ukraine's current borders). Ukraine's Jewish population declined significantly during the Cold War. In 1989, Ukraine's Jewish population was only slightly more than half of what it was thirty years earlier (in 1959). The majority of the Jews who remained in Ukraine in 1989 left the country and moved abroad (mostly to Israel) during and after the collapse of Communism in the 1990s.Antisemitic graffiti and violence against Jews are still a problem in Ukraine. | 1:24:58 (Pop-up)

More Plastic | Karma Is Kinetic | The Last Silver Special | Modernation | 1997 | One of the most entertaining and energetic Toronto bands of their time. Dean Sterling would roam around the club freely, dancing on tables, tangling himself on mics, singing up-close and personal while the band held the music together, and not without a good amount of chaos of their own. Far too short-lived a band, and one not easily forgot for those who witnessed it. | 1:36:34 (Pop-up)
Anagram | I Didn't Want To Go Anyway | 7" | Dead Astronaut | 2007 | Another band that would put on tense, blistering performances. Lead singer Matt Mason would circle around the room shouting in a monotone and either staring at his feet or glowering around the room, focused and resolute even while the audience intentionally shoved at him or tried to knock him down. His brother Willie Mason would channel his energy into his guitar, as would the rest of the band, playing one throbbing, propulsive, hypnotic art-punk song after another. | 1:40:21 (Pop-up)
The Ukrainians | Горіла сосна (Horila Sosna) [The Pine Tree Was Burning] | Respublika | Zirka Recordings | 2002 | The Wedding Present chose to cover a number of Ukrainian folk songs for one of their many Peel Sessions. He would leave The Wedding Present shortly after the session and continue on in a similar vein w/ traditional and original songs in his band "The Ukranians" | 1:43:27 (Pop-up)
