I have read that Coltrane suffered from excruciating dental pain. He sought a multitude of remedies, but the act of chomping down on a mouthpiece remained an agony for him.

From wiki, Bushell on this date plays "oboe (probably cor anglais, but described wrongly in the disc notes), contrabassoon"
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:11am

Quickly scanning, I just saw this:

"[Coltrane had had dental problems that sometimes interfered with his playing. - eds.] During the Miles/Monk years, he suffered from tooth-pain so severe that for some periods he couldn't perform at all and that was one of the reasons for Miles to sack him the first time, drug problems another."

Doug and PAULS, in the version of the hagiography that came to me, Trane's dental pain was a consequence of all the Oreos he ate while locked in a room (by Miles?) kicking heroin. Myth, maybe, but it got its teeth into my memory.

Hi Pauls hi Doug- it’s a lovely morning in the PNW I’m drinking coffee and my cats are having a wrestle to Barney Kessel
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:50am
Doug Schulkind:

And yes, this LP Carmen from Barney Kessel is chock-full lf song adaptations from Bizet's opera Carmen.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:52am

Lateef is playing oboe and bassoon on this number. (Named for his son.) The bassoon but not the oboe is pictured on the album cover: images.app.goo.gl...

Basically, the concept for each program is to find a way to slip in some Yusef Lateef.

Glad you made it, bobdc!

Is it? I thought it would be there, but then when I quickly scanned I wasn't sure. I know if I said it was there but wasn't the oboe militants would be on my ass.

Could be English horn, I guess. Did Yusef play one? Anyway, reed my lips: it is not a clarinet.

@ken krimstein
Not sure I would characterize her romantic history to a series of "swaps," but I see the connection.

@PAULS
Fuck no. The Oboe Militants sucked. And I'm not just saying that because I failed the audition.

Herbie Hancock on celeste here. (Our second bassoon/celeste pairing of the show.) At list the instrument is billed as a celeste in the liner notes. Sound almost more like a harpsichord.
