Favoriting Acid Jazz Hands with Bronwyn Bishop: Playlist from February 4, 2022 Favoriting

Musical theater from off the beaten path. Obscure and unusual show tunes from within the canon and without, flops, failures, and the newest works from up-and-coming artists—plus tried-and-true hits. Also, occasional appearances from songs that are not show tunes (but only if they go really well with show tunes).

Feb 2012 I had started a new job. I had a few days orientation in March in scenic Edison NJ.

Hello everyone!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:13pm
Cmurtha:

I never got confirmed, much to my grandmother's chagrin. I don't know why but that was the point all my cousins were forced through catholic nonsense, but not me.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:16pm
Sweet Corn Lizzie:

This day in Feb 2012 we had dinner at Trader Vic's in Emeryville CA! Very festive.

But what I came here to ask - in these ensemble type shows, there's always a woman with kind of a squawking voice (that I find kind of annoying). Is that because she's a humorous character like Ado Annie? Most musicals seem to have one of those.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:18pm
Webhamster Henry:

I kind of like having distinctive voices in Musical Theatre - Just listen to the original How To Succeed In Business!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:20pm
Sweet Corn Lizzie:

I like it except for that one!
I grew up with show tunes but drifted away and this show always reminds me how different the singing is from rock and folk.
Avatar 7:22pm
Bronwyn Bishop:

I love distinctive voices in theatre (everyone's a Midwestern musical theatre BFA now and I hate it, I plan on actively trying to cast interesting voices in my shows)...but agree sometimes the sqwawkyness can be a bit much
Avatar 7:22pm
Bronwyn Bishop:

@Cmurtha: Lol same here, I got a first communion but was the only cousin not to be confirmed and not to have to go to Catholic school...thank god haha
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:30pm
Sweet Corn Lizzie:

Wait I also did Renaissance Faire for a few years and the accent we used was BFA - Basic Faire Accent! I don't think that's what you mean....

No one has been able to explain to me what Confirmation does. Baptism, marriage, confession... most other sacraments actually DO something, change your status in some way. Confirmation means... you passed a quiz?
Avatar 🎭 7:38pm
Listener Gregory:

Sorry I'm so late tonight. I lost track of time.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:41pm
Cmurtha:

I think it shows you are a real Christian and you get some goodies from God. My grandmother insisted that if I was ever married in a catholic church I could not "step up" to the alter because I didn't do it? Not that' any church would ask things, but maybe this was true at one point.
Avatar 🎭 7:43pm
Listener Gregory:

Actually, I think the church *does* ask about confirmation now. But that's really a matter of paperwork... not a change in your status with God.

BTW, I would not pay $5 for the recording of John Paul Jones, BB.

I saw this movie as a child… not on original release, probably on TV a decade later. But I remember this song.

Danny Kaye was a huge star in his day, but he doesn’t seem to be remembered as other stars of his day are. Not sure why… poor choice in shows? They were often pretty corny.

Only Bronwyn could unearth a Sean Connery musical.

BB, Tony Bennet does a beautiful version of "I Got Lost in Her [sic] Arms," on The Art of Excellence. That record made a huge impression on me, because it was one of the first CDs I ever bought (produced in 1986), and the sound was fantastic.

Oh! What a Lovely War, the musical, was a kind of experimental work in its day. The final scene of the movie, a pan out from a vast WW I graveyard - is chilling.

I just finished the Wodehouse novel Mating Season. It is primo: unbelievably complex plot twists and turns, and of course hilarious. (Wodehouse is co-writer of the current selectin.)

Here's another spot to reccommend the excellent book BRING ON THE GIRLS, which tells the story of Bolton & Wodehouse, some of which may even be true.
