Favoriting Acid Jazz Hands with Bronwyn Bishop: Playlist from January 28, 2022 Favoriting

Bronwyn Bishop's avatar View Bronwyn Bishop's profile Favoriting

Musical theater from off the beaten path. Obscure and unusual show tunes from within the canon and without, flops, failures, and the newest works from up-and-coming artists—plus tried-and-true hits. Also, occasional appearances from songs that are not show tunes (but only if they go really well with show tunes).

And now for something completely different.
Avatar 🎭 7:02pm
Listener Gregory:

I would appreciate some rain, frankly. I have quite a bit of ice I'd like to get rid of.
Hello, BB. And WR.
Avatar 7:03pm
Bronwyn Bishop:

Hi WR and Gregory!!!
Avatar 🎭 7:04pm
Listener Gregory:

I lost all internet (and then TV) last week, so I couldn't listen then. I apologize for the outage.
Avatar 7:08pm
Roberto:

LolZ I inadvertently had two streams playing at the same time but I thought it was just WFMU being WFMU.
Avatar 🎭 7:08pm
Listener Gregory:

It was, Roberto. You are the only one listening correctly (that we know of).
Avatar 7:09pm
Roberto:

Ah.
Avatar 🎭 7:10pm
Listener Gregory:

With that title and record cover, it's hard to understand why "Cindy" wasn't a bigger hit.
Avatar 🎭 Swag For Life Member 7:12pm
TonyR:

Ooh! a white-label promo album from ABC-Paramount!
Avatar 🎭 Swag For Life Member 7:12pm
TonyR:

Linda Lavin, No!
Avatar 🎭 Swag For Life Member 7:14pm
TonyR:

Yeah, I'm late. Shove over your knees and shut up. It's snowing outside.
Avatar 🎭 7:16pm
Listener Gregory:

@TonyR, I'm glad you waited until the first intermission to be seated at least.
Avatar 7:18pm
Roberto:

"Laa-vin" is correct.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:20pm
Maulydaft:

I agree with the "Misery Is" and Peanuts theory :)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:20pm
Sweet Corn Lizzie:

Oh yay someone else who doesn't get Peanuts! It used to be much darker, like in the 50s. Much better then. I agree that Misery Is is a great song.
Avatar 🎭 7:21pm
Listener Gregory:

I thought the first 10 years of Peanuts was quite innovative (certainly for newspaper comics, which I religiously read as a kid) and often very funny. Then it continued for 40 more years when young people like Bronwyn read it and wondered what the deal was. It was played out by then.
Avatar 🎭 Swag For Life Member 7:22pm
TonyR:

Yeah, I once happened upon Peanuts collections in books published at the time long before the characters looked like the animated TV specials. Good grief.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:23pm
Maulydaft:

Ha ha! I am so into Peanuts! It's basically about not fitting in, cruelty, and anxiety. I was into it until the late 80s. It's not for everyone though!
Avatar 🎭 Swag For Life Member 7:24pm
WR:

Another thing I did not know: The Fantasticks was "off broadway".
Avatar 🎭 Swag For Life Member 7:26pm
TonyR:

"New York Review of books" had a good piece a couple years ago about what was really happening in "Book of Mormon". A good take.
Avatar 🎭 7:29pm
Listener Gregory:

This is the second musical with songs by Johnny Brandon, and I've never heard of him. I feel so... inadequate.
Avatar 🎭 Swag For Life Member 7:35pm
TonyR:

Meat Loaf is singing about a freaky 3-way!
Avatar 🎭 7:36pm
Listener Gregory:

Wow!
Avatar 🎭 Swag For Life Member 7:37pm
TonyR:

So the Meat show actually had performances? I hear applause.
Avatar 7:40pm
Bronwyn Bishop:

I now regret not titling this episode "His Comic Phallus Is Forgotten"
Avatar 🎭 7:40pm
Listener Gregory:

But it surely is NOT forgotten!
Avatar 7:41pm
Bronwyn Bishop:

@Tony: It was a live recording of the 1973 workshop production of that musical
  7:41pm
dano59:

I’d say there were still some random bits of philosophy and pathos to be had in “Peanuts” - Until the mid-70s at least, when I discovered Pogo and girls, maybe not in that order, and tuned out.
  7:43pm
dano59:

Was Meat also in one of the Rocky Horror Show stage productions?
Avatar 🎭 Swag For Life Member 7:44pm
TonyR:

For all the drama, Meat/Steinman performance was still more ROCK than "Salvation" (The New Rock Musical).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:45pm
Maulydaft:

The best Peanuts was mid 50s - like the best sci-fi/speculative fiction :D
Avatar 🎭 7:46pm
Listener Gregory:

That IS exciting, Bronwyn!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:47pm
Sweet Corn Lizzie:

Yeah Meat played the delivery boy in London I think.
Bronwyn very exciting about your musical!
Avatar 🎭 7:50pm
Listener Gregory:

This is funny! (Cheese Nips)
Avatar 🎭 Swag For Life Member 7:51pm
TonyR:

"They killed my rug!"
Avatar 🎭 Swag For Life Member 7:52pm
TonyR:

"Nice Price" in Japan is $25/disc.
Avatar 7:52pm
Bronwyn Bishop:

Howard Ashman was a comedic genius and I somewhat audaciously put 9 songs worth of lyrics into his mouth because he deserves his own unauthorized non-jukebox bio-musical and I hope you all enjoy it!!!
  7:52pm
:::::::::::::

Pierre! Really Rosie was one of my idols when I was small!
  7:54pm
dano59:

Waiting for some misery evidence via a song from You’re a Good Man, Charlie Brown.
Avatar 🎭 7:56pm
Listener Gregory:

This is a wonderful song (Pierre). Why didn't this show get more play back in the day? I was alive then (I think), and never heard of this.
Avatar 7:56pm
Bronwyn Bishop:

I decided not to play anything from Charlie Brown because I played it last week and also because it had a Broadway run in the 90s, sticking with Off-Broadway this week
  7:58pm
dano59:

Fair enough! I was unaware it made it to Broadway (my sister’s the theatre nerd in the family)
Avatar 🎭 Swag For Life Member 7:58pm
TonyR:

Just found and bookmarked Rosewater cast recording on Qobuz.
Avatar 7:58pm
Bronwyn Bishop:

Yay I'm happy to spread the Mr. Rosewater gospel

Good evening, Bronwyn and good people of the GTD theater!
Avatar 8:05pm
Bronwyn Bishop:

Hey HyperDose!!!
  8:07pm
dano59:

I loved those lyrics!
Avatar 🎭 Swag For Life Member 8:10pm
WR:

Have been digging the lyrics for most of this episode's selections.
Avatar 8:21pm
Bronwyn Bishop:

Hmmm...is Off-Broadway the best place for lyrics?? Maybe because many Off-Broadway shows are comedies
Avatar 🎭 8:22pm
Listener Gregory:

Finally a female scientist gets a voice in the musical theater!
  8:23pm
dano59:

… and “edgy”/experimental in comparison, on average?
Hey, whenever I think “off-Broadway” I remember my college friends playing the “Let My People Come” cast album
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:24pm
doctorjazz:

Here for the tail end, hi!
Avatar 8:26pm

If there's one thing I appreciate, it's a detailed playlist!
Avatar 8:26pm
Bronwyn Bishop:

Hey doctorjazz!!!
Avatar 8:27pm
Bronwyn Bishop:

@dano: We've heard from Let My People Come on this show, such a great/weird album
Avatar 8:27pm
Bronwyn Bishop:

@HyperDose: I feel like knowing the songwriters and seeing the art adds something to the experience!
Avatar 🎭 8:29pm
Listener Gregory:

@doctorj, you missed the whole comic phallus section!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:31pm
doctorjazz:

@LG will have to check out the archive, can't do without my minimum daily requirement of comic phallus music!
Avatar 8:37pm
HyperDose:

@Bronwyn Totally agree! It's an immersive experience. I'd imagine you'd start to see some recurring names after a while.
Avatar 🎭 8:39pm
Listener Gregory:

Bronwen Booth totally misspells her name! Embarrassing.
Avatar 8:40pm
northguineahills:

could be a Man or Astroman musical.....
Avatar 8:43pm
Bronwyn Bishop:

@HyperDose: Soooo many recurring names since it's such a small genre, I even did a special show in October 2020 ranking the songwriters I'd played the most
Avatar 8:45pm
Bronwyn Bishop:

@Gregory: It's not as bad as this horror: pagesix.com...
Avatar 🎭 8:46pm
Listener Gregory:

No, not the pompoms!
  8:47pm
dano59:

“Zombie Prom” was the name of a themed Halloween event in Ithaca one year. I wasn’t aware there was a show!!
Avatar 8:48pm
Bronwyn Bishop:

Dano, did you go to IC?? That's where I went!
Avatar 🎭 8:48pm
Listener Gregory:

Bronwyn, yikes!
Avatar 8:48pm
Bronwyn Bishop:

Actually Bronwen is the original spelling- it's Welsh, Bronwyn is the Irish variation
  8:50pm
dano59:

No Bron I worked at Cornell. I seem to recall you knew my name from WRFI (when I called in one marathon)
Avatar 8:51pm
HyperDose:

Really going to need closure with this Jonny situation. Does he remain a student? Does he get the girl? So many questions.
  8:52pm
dano59:

See “My Boyfriend’s Back” for more on this theme… so young, so dead, so misunderstood
  8:55pm
dano59:

“Faster! Fasterrr!!”
Avatar 8:55pm

Well that was the best thing I've heard played on this show. Huzzah!

My daughter, Rebecca, is over for the weekend, your Ithaca classmate.
Thanks, Bronwyn!

PATH train issue was impacting JSQ-33 service, and I was about to write a warning but just got notice that normal service has resumed. except for NWK-WTC.
Avatar 🎭 8:58pm
Listener Gregory:

I guess Los Angeles is all "off-Broadway" (re: Reefer Madness).
Avatar 8:58pm
Bronwyn Bishop:

NWK-WTC is my train...omg
Avatar 8:59pm
Bronwyn Bishop:

@Gregory: I counted it because it had an Off-Broadway run in 2001
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:59pm
doctorjazz:

Beck got in from Manhattan, Path seems ok.
Avatar 8:59pm
Bronwyn Bishop:

Ok phew
