A viking ship appears on the horizon, a likeness of Alice Coltrane carved into its bow. Rare birds flock together to sing Francoise Hardy as soul hits. A sunset of blips and bleeps fills the air.

Trouble, that Carrington essay is reprinted in this anthology:

I cannot find a PDF version, or at least have not been able to, but I'll keep poking around and see what I might see.

Reception not great on the kitchen radio/cd/cassette player (which unfortunately doesnβt play the latter, leaving stacks of old jam tapes abandoned underneath the bed). May switch over to playing you in the phone through the portable Bose speaker.
Selections very redolent of this mellow, grey and rainy day. Really dig this popol vuh track.

I read that article you linked to yesterday on the so-called political show hosts. Good stuff. But having a tab open all day (took me a while to finish; stupid work) called "The Joke's on You" meant that no matter what WFMU was doing (even when Mary played a dozen covers of "Jockey Full of Bourbon"), I had "Flaming Telepaths" firmly implanted in my brain!

2. Seriously, student mixes are such a great idea.
3. The rain can't stop the clicky star parade that's happening right now!

Mike W., maybe best you missed WWB last night then. Matt played "Life Is Suicide" and won the Prix Bleu-Goth.

Yeah, Handy, I thought that writer really illuminated the subject of late night comedians being corporate tools in such a thorough way. And when he contrasts them to the likes of Carlin, Hicks, Lenny Bruce etc itβs so clear and evident.

Just finished another HST bio. Each author finds another bunch of really outrageous and uproarious tales of debauchery, decadence and mischief that had me howling very few pages literally.

@threemoons With two young kids now we decided very early on that we had to have one here. For just socks, underwear, etc just hand wash and hang. Met a British roadie on tour once who only took two pairs of undies with him. The one who wore that day heβd hang overnight and then use the other one the next day.
Thanks @PRB for the Alice Coltrane bio. Have to get around to that at some point.

It all came back that my HS teacher who was really a mentor to me lent me Small Change and Rum, Sodomy, and the Lash on vinyl when I was ~15 and said, "You might enjoy *these*." And BAM. Brain opened wide to the world. Hearing it on vinyl again was so powerful. And the object, the damn Ding an Sich, was forty-five years old! And sounded fantastic.
I catalogued my tapes a couple weeks back and found a ton of stuff he'd dubbed for me: Christy Moore, Jean Redpath, Ewan MacColl, Planxty, all sorts of stuff that I'd never have been able to find as a dumb kid.
Sometimes you get lucky. If you have the luck to have been born with the opportunity to find that luck.

Probably would have muttered something similar about there being no good new music anymore had I not been tuning in more here. As a result of you fine folks at FMU one quickly concludes the polar opposite: that thereβs actually *too much* good music. Literally, I can hardly keep up with it all. And thank you guys from the bottom of my heart for bringing it to us.
Great stories ThreeMoons and Handy, and all the other similar anecdotes! βTis good to be with you allβ¦
