A viking ship appears on the horizon, a likeness of Alice Coltrane carved into its bow. Rare birds flock together to sing Francoise Hardy as soul hits. A sunset of blips and bleeps fills the air.

Reception not great on the kitchen radio/cd/cassette player (which unfortunately doesn’t play the latter, leaving stacks of old jam tapes abandoned underneath the bed). May switch over to playing you in the phone through the portable Bose speaker.

I read that article you linked to yesterday on the so-called political show hosts. Good stuff. But having a tab open all day (took me a while to finish; stupid work) called "The Joke's on You" meant that no matter what WFMU was doing (even when Mary played a dozen covers of "Jockey Full of Bourbon"), I had "Flaming Telepaths" firmly implanted in my brain!

Passaic River Blues:

I see that my work meeting caused me to miss a superb opening set, including a cut from "Universal Consciousness." For all Alice Coltrane fans on the board, just want to report I finished reading "Monument Eternal: The Music of Alice Coltrane" by Franya Berkman (who sadly passed away only a few years after publication), and *highly* recommend it as a short academic examination of Alice McLeod Coltrane's entire career, from teenaged church organist to proficient Detroit bebop artist to Coltrane's partner, avant-garde genius, and eventual swamini. Really enjoyable, and satisfied a deep Coltrane jones I just can't shake these days.

We have coin-op machines in the basement, for which I am extremely grateful. The family upstairs still maintains an illicit washing machine, though, so I get to listen to it spin whenever there's a quiet moment on the bathroom boombox. At our last apt., the illicit washing machine upstairs would short out the power at least once per cycle, so we're moving up in the world.

karlward, the Vin Diesel muscle T is literally the only shirt in the store. All shirts are Vin Diesel muscle Ts. You just have to know how to wear them.

Great story about the science teacher drummer, HyperDose. On the other end of adolescent interactions with teacher drummers my Aunt’s boyfriend at the time had come out with her from the Bronx to hear/see me play with my band in my parent's garage on LI. The thing I remember most is telling me I didn’t have to leave the hi-hat so open when practicing. Being that age I immediately dismissed him (though his point was correct). Of course we were just bashing out the puerile hard rock of the day, which had to be as loud and splashy as possible. It was Live At Leeds in the first place that even made me want to play in a band - how could this guy ever understand!? Amazing that your teacher was taking the time to call your attention to how different cymbals sounded and then advising you.

@threemoons With two young kids now we decided very early on that we had to have one here. For just socks, underwear, etc just hand wash and hang. Met a British roadie on tour once who only took two pairs of undies with him. The one who wore that day he’d hang overnight and then use the other one the next day.

Thanks @PRB for the Alice Coltrane bio. Have to get around to that at some point.

With the vinyl backup I received a sort of surprise LP yesterday. Bought the Lisa Bella Donna Bob Moog tribute record many moons ago. Kind of forgot I'd requested the record many moons ago.

@Zinn Absolutely. I was lucky to have a few teachers who took the time to get to know their students and be mentors. I also remember the days of playing in cement basements, wanting to be as loud as possible, and thinking it sounded good. My ears prefer the acoustically treated room.

@Wild Neil: Sounds like when Las Vegas got belted in 2008. Anywhere outside the ski areas up the mountains ringing the valley were totally gobsmacked and without plows, salt, etc. Snowmen near the Fabulous Las Vegas sign and the like!

When I lived in Austin and we'd get an occasional light snow, people didn't grasp basic physics -- you can't race a two-ton pickup to a light on snow and expect it stop immediately. I got t-boned three times as a result.

Yeah man. I’ve lost so much hearing in my left ear it’s very *troubling*. Just took a hearing test at an ENT’s office and the drop off in my left compared to the right is alarming. Put it this way, if I’m laying on my rights side with my right ear covered by the pillow I can only hear a blob of low frequency. Which is weird b/c on the phone it’s always with my left.
Goddamn splashy hi-hat is where it might have started…
Haven’t played a gig in last 15 years without earplugs.

Didn’t know Nina covered β€œOoh Girl.” Cool remix.

Handy Haversack:

HyperDose, Zinn, I may have told this story? But we recently FINALLY got a turntable hooked up and working after months and months of trying to get it going. Our first record store trip, I picked up Tom Waits's Small Change on vinyl. Played it later while K8 was cleaning up after dinner. This is something I've had on CD since HS, on the computer since that became a thing. A fairly frequent listen. An album I know really well. And two songs in I was in tears.

It all came back that my HS teacher who was really a mentor to me lent me Small Change and Rum, Sodomy, and the Lash on vinyl when I was ~15 and said, "You might enjoy *these*." And BAM. Brain opened wide to the world. Hearing it on vinyl again was so powerful. And the object, the damn Ding an Sich, was forty-five years old! And sounded fantastic.

I catalogued my tapes a couple weeks back and found a ton of stuff he'd dubbed for me: Christy Moore, Jean Redpath, Ewan MacColl, Planxty, all sorts of stuff that I'd never have been able to find as a dumb kid.

Sometimes you get lucky. If you have the luck to have been born with the opportunity to find that luck.

I wish I had cool teachers in junior high/high school. The closest I got to that was my grade school music teacher, whom in 20/20 hindsight had either a severe substance abuse problem and/or some kind of neurological thing going on. He had posters for Pete Seeger and Simon and Garfunkel all over the classroom as we dooted away on our little plastic recorders, and he played/had us sing stuff from Woodie Guthrie, the Beatles, and S&G. Always ALWAYS wore heavily-tinted aviators and spoke in a clear but very flat monotone. He was alternatively creepy and fascinating to my child's eyes.

PS he NEVER took his glasses off, ever. From K-6 he was our music teacher and only ONCE by a trick of the light, and seeing him in profile, my best friend (still my best friend now, almost 50 years later) confirmed that his eyes were in fact blue. I mean, full amber/blackout lenses with a top mirror fade.

There were a few days when the Cafeteria Ladies who did Discipline/Making Sure We Didn't All Kill Each Other during Lunch weren't available and he had to sub in for them. One of the dumbest business decisions in history was the unwillingness of the record industry to license their catalogs to Napster. And Bertelsmann bought an equity stake in Napster at the same time they were suing them!

Passaic River Blues:

I think the major problem with the article was, as Trouble noted, Gioia highlighted various trends and aspects of the insanely complex, decades-long process of the disintegration of the traditional major label-dominated music industry (with direct sales, radio, and television distribution) and overly-simplifying and ultimately misdiagnosing these disparate things as a battle between Establish Musicians and New Musicians. You can't take old distribution models and map them to newer ones--comparing stats on user-directed global streaming services to top-down corporate radio programming is just inapposite and an ultimately useless exercise. And I don't say this to defend the various streaming services, which generally only pay exploitative rates to musicians. Also, not discussing or even mentioning bandcamp was a pretty significant oversight by Gioia.

Probably would have muttered something similar about there being no good new music anymore had I not been tuning in more here. As a result of you fine folks at FMU one quickly concludes the polar opposite: that there’s actually *too much* good music. Literally, I can hardly keep up with it all.
