Ms Jones _might_ have been in the group we're hearing, but even if not the musical group[s] in which she sang (and played?) probalby sounded much like it.

H.W. Armstrong's British Israelitism may be responsible for that notion's being rampant now in the further reaches of the American Right—that is, that part of our polity increasingly control of the Republican Party.

OMG! My mom made our family go to this church (Worldwide Church of God) and I "escaped" this cult when I was a young teen!

I'd say it was a real religion: when Armstrong was accused of rape by his son, the accuser was thrown-out—religious S.O.P..

True story: when I was a little kid my father found me listening to The World Tomorrow, the Worldwide Church of God syndicated radio show. We discussed what Garner Ted Armstrong had been speaking about. Also my father, in his most serious tone, cautioned me to learn, as a reliable rule of thumb, never ever to trust someone with a name like “Garner Ted”.
  6:46pm
Old Dave:

Garner Ted's show was featured like crazy on WRVA when I was growing up outside Richmond VA- it it sounded important! However (age 10) I grew bored and went outside... there were salamanders to catch and stuff like that.
