The Frogs  Sailors Board Me Now   Favoriting Bananimals  Self Released  2009    I was kind of obsessed by this song when it came out. Oh, ribald seafaring man love! The Frogs were an American rock music band founded in 1980, in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, by brothers Jimmy and Dennis Flemion. The brothers mainly wrote and performed short, catchy pop songs, but they are also known for their improvised home recordings which are delivered in a comedic style, and often include controversial issues such as race, religion, and sexuality (notably homoeroticism). A history of strife has hindered the band, although a devoted fan base that includes many well-known musicians has supported the group.    0:05:01 (Pop-up)
The Great Scots  That Wasn't No Girl   Favoriting The Great Scots Arrive!  Sundazed  1998    Formed as The Shadows in 1963, they then gave themselves mohawks and changed their name to "Beavers of Halifax" and were hailed as Canada's Beatles. They they decided to all wear kilts and vests and rechristen themselves "The Great Scots". One of Nova Scotia's finest garage rock bands of the 60's. They appeared on Shindig!    0:08:20 (Pop-up)

The Stolen Minks  Reflexes   Favoriting High Kicks  Self Released  2008    The Stolen Minks are a three-piece Canadian garage punk band who have been praised as "Halifax's answer to The Gossip and The Detroit Cobras". They have shared stages with prominent bands of their genre, including the Black Lips, Wanda Jackson, King Khan & BBQ, Brutal Knights, The Death Set, Statues and An Albatross. The Stolen Minks have been showcased at a range of festivals including Halifax Pop Explosion, Pop Montreal, Sappyfest and Ladyfest Ottawa.[1] The band has toured Canada extensively and in recent years covered large portions of the United States.    0:12:45 (Pop-up)

Dúo Las Perlas de Huancavelica  Vaca Ratay   Favoriting Puro Tayta Shanti  Little Axe Records  60's? / 2019    Little Axe Records is both a record label and storefront in Portland, Oregon. The label was started by Warren Hill in 2011 after parting ways with Mississippi Records... Little Axe Records primarily focuses on reissuing small pressings of international music, putting out records by artists that never had a release outside of their native countries, were self-released, or whose music was initially intended to be shared only with friends. “...I like to focus more on stuff that people aren’t clamoring for because maybe they are not familiar with it.” This song is described by the label as “Andean party music,” Puro Tayta Shanti is a compilation of a type of Peruvian folk music called santiagos, which center around the “fiesta de Santiago,” an ancestral celebration honoring nature and cattle. With that in mind, the record opens with “Vaca Ratay,” a mind-bending listen where feminine voices mix with the loud mooing of a cow. “[It’s] a simple and powerful song that is almost a blueprint for other santiagos of the region,” says Peruvian-American DJ and musician Rick Omonte, who put the compilation together with Hill.    0:29:22 (Pop-up)
The Bug, Jason Williamson, Sleaford Mods  Stoat   Favoriting Treetop  Ninja Tune  2021    Jason Williamson:______ "Both Stoat and Treetop tread the usual path lyrically for me, nonsense mixed in with little micro story’s of whatever. Excuses to get out frustrations and anger. I’ve been talking with Kevin for a few years now as regards doing some tunes. Matching something to The Bugs music was always on the cards, a chance to shape different vocal approaches to a certain degree which is deffo evident on Stoat I think. Love both tunes. Proper. Bang into this collab.” The Bug:_________ "Reared on Mark E Smith and Crass, how could i not be blown away by Sleaford Mods? Since first hearing 'Austerity Dogs', I was smitten by Jason's razor sharp lyricism and punk as f-ck delivery. So when we first chatted on Twitter a few years ago, casually raving about a mutual love of anti-social American hip hop, we pretty much immediately discussed the idea of a collab. And tho' it took a few years to actually realise the concept, 2021 seems like the purrrfect time in terms of global social meltdown and the release of my album 'Fire'. It’s been a joy to work with Jason on these tracks and we are already discussing the idea of more to follow…”  *   0:31:43 (Pop-up)
Felini  Zum Zum Zum Zazoeira   Favoriting The Sexual Life Of The Savages: Underground Post-Punk From São Paulo, Brasil  Soul Jazz  1987 / 2005    "Fellini was one the most notorious São Paulo underground acts from the mid-80's. They recorded some of the most notable lo-fi albums of the period. Fellini was made up of journalist Cadão Volpato on vocals and multi-instrumentalist and journalist Thomas Pappon (also from Smack and formerly of Voluntários da Pátria) plus Ricardo Salvagni and Jayr Marcos. They fused European post punk influences with electro bossa, drum machine patterns and synths."    0:35:22 (Pop-up)

The recording process was, however, often fraught with arguments amongst the band as to the sound and direction of the album."    0:44:59 (Pop-up)

Al Massrieen  Horreya   Favoriting Modern Music: Habibi Funk 6  Habibi Funk Records  2017    Al Massrieen (المصريين) is an Egyptian pop music group, active during the 1970s and 1980s . His work, mainly dispersed on cassettes, was compiled by the German label Jakarta Records / Habibi Funk in the album Modern Music ( 2017 ). Alex Cameron  Sara Jo   Favoriting Sara Jo Single  Secretly Canadian  2021    I like playing songs that make Derek laugh. These are excellent lyrics. Considering my trip involved antivaxxers, the chorus resonated with me. Alex Cameron is an Australian musician, singer and songwriter. Born and raised in Sydney, he is best known for his solo career, a high-concept act in which Cameron initially adopted the persona of a failed entertainer. He has written songs for the Killers, which is odd because this song is good but most of theirs are terrible.  *   1:10:09 (Pop-up)
Shalabi Effect  Boardwalk at Apollo Beach   Favoriting Shalabi Effect  Alien8 Recordings  2000    "Shalabi Effect is free improvisation. This does not mean atonal noise, although atonality and beautiful noises are ever present; it also doesn’t mean that there is no melody, but the melodies are rarely if ever known ahead of time. The base sound comes from a combination of Middle Eastern modes, played by Sam Shalabi on the Oud, and the cinematic psychedelic style of Anthony Seck."    1:13:14 (Pop-up)
Pan Amsterdam (feat. Jason Williamson (Prod. Coup Diablo))  Hannibal Lecture   Favoriting HA Chu  Def Pressé  2020    Sleaford Mods frontman Jason Williamson guests on this track by New York hip-hop artist Pan Amsterdam, who is also lead trumpeter of Iggy Pop's touring band    1:22:32 (Pop-up)

Whitey  Animal Kingdom   Favoriting The Times They Are Deranging  No! Label  2021    TFEB favourite Whitey is back with a new release! Terminally grumpy and pissed at "the man" (and rightfully so!), the artist whose real name is Nathan Joseph Wonnacott continues to delight.  *   1:45:39 (Pop-up)
Sweeping Promises  Pain Without a Touch   Favoriting Pain Without a Touch Single  Feel It  2021    In 2020 this band released an album called Hunger For a Way Out. This is my new favourite band this week. I love them. They are from Lawrence, Kansas.  *   1:49:54 (Pop-up)

Ausmuteants  Echo Beach   Favoriting Mates Rates / Echo Beach 7"  Hozac Records  2015    Possibly exceeds the excellence of the original by Martha and the Muffins. Our theme song, and Ausmuteants truly do it major justice.    1:54:51 (Pop-up)

I have googled that for you Tyler and hat Is a Malt? A malt, or a "malted shake," is just a milkshake made with the addition of malted milk powder. This gives the shake a bit of a toasty, rich taste that enhances classic milkshake flavors like chocolate or vanilla. It also creates a thicker consistency

WOW - Amen Dunes with Sleaford Mods? The SM sure do get around...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:30pm
Derek Westerholm:

They have definitely been busy lately! This song shifts dramatically when they make their appearance, but the backing vocals Jason Williamson provides are very subtle.

Tyler:

@Derek - really liking it so far...

This is a great track.

Yes I am liking this very much!!! Derek always has the surprises!

Tyler:

De La Soul have been doing some interesting collaborations recently resulting in songs you would never think they were involved with. 'The Anonymous Nobody' is one of these collabs I would strongly recommend.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:34pm
Derek Westerholm:

Will check out the De La...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:35pm
DJ Babs:

Nice! I have always loved De La Soul!

@Derek just to stack the deck - they do a collab with David Byrne on that album :)

The orbital remix of the Sleafords Mods track is phenomenal. But, the record is $50 with shipping for two tracks. Sigh.

Not only have I never listened to John Prine, I don’t know anyone who has. He’s considered one of those guys like John Hiatt or Graham Parker that only music critics like. But that was great!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:44pm
DJ Babs:

LOL it is true! I sadly did not hear about him until he died, lol
Avatar 9:45pm
VinylVillainSean:

I liked John Prine :(
  9:46pm
Tyler:

There's some John Prine I really like, but there is some I find really corny and kind of amateurish, but I would never want to spoil anyone's enjoyment or appreciation of his work.

Derek, it's the Ashes mate! We have the Poms struggling on day 3. Canada never did catch the Colonial Cricket bug.

DJ Babs:

This is my new favourite band this week lol
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:53pm
Derek Westerholm:

Yeah, John Prine has completely slipped under/out of my radar, but that Viagara Boys reading of the song is addictive... They make it totally their own & at least 70% of the song is really them having their own way. There are so many amazing sounds and ventures into left-field in that song. The original doesn't really stand up next to that interpretation.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:55pm
Derek Westerholm:

Scott67, we got too busy with Lacrosse.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:56pm
Derek Westerholm:

Lacrosse, apparently is "the oldest organized sport in North America, with its origins in aboriginal Canada as early as the 17th century."

My fave snotty synth punks!!! Yay!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:57pm

Tyler:

There's a cricket pitch in the ravine near my home. Sometimes I'll watch for a while but I have no idea about the rules. Any game that takes days to settle and has tea breaks is a hard sell in the new world. I know many people from India that are fanatical about it, though...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:58pm
Derek Westerholm:

I think tea breaks should be essential in all sports
Avatar 🏝 Swag For Life Member 9:58pm
