Sinead O Brien | Taking On Time | Taking On Time Single | Speedy Wunderground | 2019 | Originally from Limerick, O’Brien’s work captures the everyday and the inbetween in a way that transcends any genre label. Writing from her own observations, O’Brien’s influences can be found in the realism of Mark E. Smith of The Fall and Patti Smith, and the works of literary icons such as Samuel Beckett, W.B Yeats, Flann O’Brien, Joan Didion and Albert Camus. She has been published in several publications of note and performed alongside John Cooper Clarke and The Brian Jonestown Massacre. | 0:17:54 (Pop-up)
English Teacher | R&B | R&B and Wallace 7" | Nice Swan Records | 2021 | This is not an R&B song. English Teacher are from Leeds, UK. Frontwoman Lily Fontaine explores ideas of imposter syndrome and lethargy throughout the creative process. The band explains "[the song] is about the cyclical, productivity-diminishing paradox of low self-esteem and imposter syndrome-induced writer’s block that then fuels low self-esteem and imposter syndrome. It’s also about racial identity and putting the love that you have to offer a potential romantic partner back into yourself” | * | 0:21:05 (Pop-up) |

"The title track Dub Town was inspired by graffiti sprayed on the front of an abandoned former grocery store in small town Ontario. Cavernous bass interlocks with a heavy downtempo acid vibe. The melodica gets processed through infinitely mutating effects, creating a vast and meditative environment. This town has become nothing but a dub town." Chrome | Terminate | Scaropy | Cleopatra | 2021 | "The incredible 13th studio album from one of the most most influential experimental rock bands of the post-punk era, the surrealistic proto-industrialists Chrome! Still helmed by long-time Chrome guitarist and mastermind Helios Creed, this line-up welcomes back Hilary "Stench" Hanes who was Chrome's bass player for the band's classic '80s albums (Blood On The Moon, 3rd From The Sun, etc.) as well as familiar faces Tommy L. Cyborg, Aleph Omega, and Lou Minatti XIII!" Chrome Bandcamp -> Scaropy album> | * | 0:34:10 (Pop-up) |

Body Breaks | Work for the Man | Bad Trouble | We Are Time Records | 2021 | "In her job as a support worker and advocate for the neurodiverse community, Reich met a woman on the autism spectrum who was prevented from dating by her conservative family. This feeling of helplessness combined with the upsetting sight of factory smokestacks on bus rides to her client’s house inspired Reich to write the album’s angriest song, “Work For The Man.”" Body Breaks Bandcamp> | * | 0:38:13 (Pop-up) |
Deerhoof | Scarcity Is Manufactured | Actually, You Can | Joyful Noise Recordings | 2021 | "“Scarcity is Manufactured,” Actually, You Can’s thesis, flips “La Bamba'' into uncharted time signatures; Rodriguez and Dieterich shred in and out of unison at a high speed scrub while Saunier’s heavier-than-ever kit bashes in sync with Satomi Matsuzaki’s fuzzed-out bass. She sings with a candy in her mouth, “I thought it was night, but it’s day! It’s every day at once! Behold my house of light! Bankruptor of the rainbow!” It’s a condemnation of America’s mundanity, replacing the narrative of inevitable violence with the real joy that's not being talked about." Adult | Contagious | Nausea EP | Ersatz Audio | 2000 | The first release by Adult, this did change my life One of Adult's more gentle...yet still unsettling songs. Perfect for a pandemic soundtrack. | 0:56:52 (Pop-up)
Tiga | Shoes | Ciao! | Different Recordings | 2009 | This album by Montreal's Tiga was co-produced by Soulwax, James Murphy and some other guy. It is the embodiment of sleek electroclash soundings....but there is something so very tongue in cheek about the relationship between electronic music and fashionistas on this particular tune. | 1:00:06 (Pop-up)
Rational Youth | Saturdays In Silesia | Cold War Night Life | Yul Records | 1982 | Rational Youth were formed in 1980 in Montreal by Tracy Howe and Bill Vorn. They are considered one of Canada's first synthpop groups. Howe was in a band called Heaven Seventeen (not to be confused with Heaven 17) | 1:03:52 (Pop-up)
Fat Truckers | Anorexic Robot | The First Fat Truckers Album Is For Sale | International DJ Gigolo | 2003 | Derek feels the lyrics are "lazy" on this but I dunno, it works for me. [Derek chimes in: It's mostly just the "Error, error does not compute" part. Love Fat Truckers, though.] | 1:07:56 (Pop-up)
Dog Ruff | Jon E Storm | Northern Electronic Compilation | Discograph | 2003 | This tune is an absolute ripper. It is one of my secret weapons that I gladly share with you all. Also, someone somewhere was insane enough to do a mashup of this tune with "Tradition" from Fiddler on the Roof and lemme tell ya, it's one of the most bananas thing I've ever heard. Someday I'll play it. Right now, this will do just fine. We can only handle so much bananas. | 1:12:26 (Pop-up)

Mouse On Mars & Cavern Of Anti-Matter | Fertilized | 21 Again | Monkeytown Records | 2014 | Cavern Of Anti-Matter is Cavern Of Anti-Matter are Tim Gane, Joe Dilworth (both of Stereolab) and Holger Zapf | 1:24:26 (Pop-up)
Mouse On Mars & Laetitia Sadier | My Toe Is On Fire | 21 Again | Monkeytown Records | 2014 | Laetitia Sadier was also of Stereolab. Mouse on Mars produced a few of their songs on 1997's Dots And Loops | 1:26:58 (Pop-up)
Von Südenfed | Slow Down Ronnie | The Rhinohead 12" | Domino Recording Co. | 2007 | Von Südenfed were Mark E. Smith & Mouse On Mars, a seemingly unlikely collaboration that released an album, a single, and a couple of stray tracks. This is an otherwise unavailable B-Side cut, which hilariously documents Mark E. Smith's musings about a snooker player. | 1:32:01 (Pop-up)

Yard Act | Land of The Blind | Land of the Blind Single | Island (UK) | 2021 | Gotta say, the Yard act is really growing on me. We stagger about, sightless, flightless in a world without kindness in meaningless existence. Now gimme that 50p. | * | 1:44:20 (Pop-up) |
Jakko Eino Kalevi | Who Put the Bomb? | Modern Life | Helmi Levyt | 2010 | Jakko Eino Kalevi is a Finnish musician. He was also a tram driver. He may still be a tram driver, for all we know. It's good, solid employment. Pitchfork describes him as a "a dreamy sprite with chest-length strawberry blonde hair and a gaze like a pair of moonbeams". This is precisely why people dislike Pitchfork. | 1:47:19 (Pop-up)
Pan Amsterdam ft. Iggy Pop | Mobile | Mobile Single | Def Pressé | 2019 | Derek played me this and I laughed myself silly. We haven't played Uncle Iggy in a while and this cameo is one of his best. Pan Amsterdam is a Dutch fair for art, antiques and design but it's also the brainchild of Leron Thomas, Jazz musician and rap artist. We don't play a lot of rap on Echo Beach, but when we do, it's the good shit. He says of himself "Just your run of the mill jazz musician realizing that I didn’t vibrate well on the NYC jazz scene, with a sympathetic girlfriend paying the rent in a shitty apartment and watching her become resentful and bitter." | 1:50:55 (Pop-up)
Grace Jones | She's Lost Control (Long Version) | Private Life: The Compass Point Sessions | Island Def Jam | 1998 | This is the best cover version of this song and anyone who disagrees is wrong. Nobody does it like Grace. She was the first artist to cover Joy Division, and almost worked with A Certain Ratio during this time, but it didn't quite happen. | 1:59:08 (Pop-up) |
