glad to be hearing this show. last i spoke with my mother, she asked me if i still listened to The Monkees, and that every time she and my stepfather heard them (lately), or mention of them, he'd ask her the same.

their greatest hits album was my first lp (xmas, age 5 c 76)

i love The Monkees!

This Al Hirt cut is from the LP with the super cool cover of Al with The Green Hornet! Hey, it was 1966. You had to be there.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:30pm
Funky16Corners:

I think you'll find a LOT of Monkees fans (and a couple of experts) on WFMU and the streams, including Andrew Sandoval, who sets up the Monkees most recent tour, and has published a comprehensive history of the band.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:31pm
Funky16Corners:

@Jeff - This is cool because I can't think of too many covers of the theme song
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:33pm
Funky16Corners:

I was telling my sons the other day that I first experienced the Monkees on Saturday mornings, when the series was rerun in the late 60s/early 70s, right after the cartoons.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:33pm
spodiodi:

*nods* 😀🙏 indeed, Larry. i've been enjoying slowly learning and listening. i love it!
  3:33pm
Moog1 Radio:

Los Shippy's and The Jaguars both covered the theme from the Monkees. but they are pretty cheap covers
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:34pm
spodiodi:

the tv show was def. my intro as well. loved hearing the theme song covered just now!
  3:34pm
Moog1 Radio:

Then you have the Manhattan Strings and my favorite the Floyd Cramer version
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:34pm
Funky16Corners:

@Kurt - Are they both non-US recordings?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:34pm
Funky16Corners:

I'm still looking for the Floyd Cramer LP
Avatar 3:35pm
Erica:

The late 60s/early 70s was when the Monkees was aimed at children. And New songs replaced older ones in the show.
  3:35pm
Moog1 Radio:

I think the Jaguars were Japanese
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:35pm
Funky16Corners:

@Erica - I think the reruns on Antenna TV are the original episodes
Avatar 3:35pm
Erica:

I learned this a decade ago when I was going through a Monkees obsession during my senior year of high school.
Avatar 3:37pm
Erica:

MeTV aired the Monkees episodes when Peter York died too. I believe they were DVD prints of the episodes as they was higher quality.
  3:37pm
Moog1 Radio:

I discovered Head in the late 80s and still watch it religiously to this day. I had a chance to see the Criterion Blu Ray version. It knocked my socks off.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:37pm
Funky16Corners:

I didn't know there was a Criterion version!
  3:38pm
Moog1 Radio:

I was told it was only available as part of an Easy Rider box set
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:39pm
Funky16Corners:

Rockula was on cable today and I went down a Toni Basil rabbit hole, including her dancing with Davy in Head
Avatar 3:39pm
Erica:

Antenna TV aired an edited syndicated package of Monkees episodes as some scenes were censored or edited out and some scenes were in sepia tone.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:39pm
spodiodi:

i remember writing them letters ( i don't think i ended up sending.) Peter Tork was my favorite then (for whatever reason).

i love She!!!
  3:40pm
Moog1 Radio:

Michael's Birthday sequence aka "The Cop's Dream" is my favorite moment in Head.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:40pm
Funky16Corners:

It's weird, because of how I first saw the episodes, I assumed the Monkees was a kids show (which I supposed it kind of was) but had no idea of their prime time success, which was when I was 4-6 years old
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:41pm
spodiodi:

there was a rumor going around for years (that i believed) that he'd died while jumping into an empty swimming pool. i'm glad he didn't :) rip, Mr. Tork

This may be the greatest Monkees cover of all.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:53pm
Funky16Corners:

Hey Mike! I believe it did.

Moog1 Radio:

Happy!
  3:55pm
Moog1 Radio:

Peter Thomas also does a swinging version of this.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:56pm
Funky16Corners:

Despite the Wonder Bread vocals, the instrumentation on this is great
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:57pm
Funky16Corners:

This is one of those Easy versions of a rock song that manages to take on a cool life of its own, like the Lettermen doing 'Hello I Love You'
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:58pm
Mike Sin:

That Enoch Light Singers "12 Smash Hits" LP is something else -- it's amazing as it was geared to the "old timers". And, in the '60s, that meant anyone over 30!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:00pm
Funky16Corners:

Yeah, it's like the episode of Hazel where the kid forms a "rock" band and his aunt and uncle, who look like they're 28 start freaking out about the crazy noise, and the long hair and the "yeah yeah yeah" music. It's hilarious

@Funky16 Corners: you were saying before about how they were locked out of studio while professional musician's recorded the instrumental tracks. Well as I'm sure you know that group of musicians were none other than the famous wrecking Crew, who did like 98% of all the recordings for all the acts of the day, whether they were solo, Duo's, trio's, quartets, etc etc
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:36pm
Funky16Corners:

Yes indeed! Busy, BUSY and very talented group of players.

I never thought it was fair that the Monkees were lambasted for not playing their own instruments, when practically no one else did either. Almost all the acts were backed up by musicians on stage, and as for the Monkees they did play their own instruments. Mike and Peter were the pros, and Mickey and David were the novice. But they pulled it out of the hat and did all right.
