I learned about the idea of structure alienation at my previous residence, in a multi-family house.
I knew almost nothing about the people in one apartment; the other one i knew too much!
Then i moved to another house, and now the communication has to go thru the landlord to the other tenants.
As for hostility...i hope it does not get so bad that you need legal help; my friends are going thru that and it is STRESSFUL.

Let Love In is not only the first Nick Cave solo I bought, but also the last of his that I like. Žižek described "structured alienation" as him living in an building and he keeps a certain friendly distance from his fellow residents.
My take on alienation in late stage capitalism: We need to manage the economic alienation by certain kinds of institutions, regulations, various other mechanisms. Much of the acute social alienation can be overcome by TALKING to people.
Avatar 🦇 Swag For Life Member 10:10pm

In my opinion, Americans in general are more anti-social than social; in Western societies, we may be on the extreme end. We definitely have problems, but i would like to that we do socialize well in certain ways.

Western Isolation is problem in the prairies of Canada and the territories. In fact, some books/films on Canadian culture exclude the extreme north because it is too difficult to travel there.
U.S. major cities are usually on the same page politically: New York, Chicago, Los Angeles
Canadian major cities are at odds usually: Montreal, Toronto, Calgary

I actually found New York City to be friendlier on the surface than Boston. In New England, people like to give you a hard time. It's their way of figuring out if you can take it. If you can put up with their B.S. at first, then you often have a friend for life. I'm not a fan of this approach at all and I'm sure it has turned many unsuspecting people off.
