Most people only know Kamchatka from the game of Risk, but people there didn't know it until perestroika in the 1990s. Then a group of friends in the Okhotsk region became obsessed with the game, but it wasn't available in Russia so they painstakingly created their own boards, maps, and pieces by hand and formed a homemade Risk league. When our American research group finally arrived there, we pointed out there was a free computer version online and they smacked their heads because having grown up Soviet, they had all just assumed the only way to do anything was the hard way.

@Dan, in this case it's mostly obsolete digital (DAT & MiniDisc) to modern digital format via analog transfer. Finding working machines has been the biggest challenge.
