Mark R:

Well, I have to say, you were much hipper than me back in the 70s, @mic_a, because I never heard of Greasy Truckers, or Unobstructed Universe, for that matter. But I'm really digging the 70s sounds, Jeff. This piece could have come out yesterday to my ears. Let's see, in 1976, I think I was still catching up with early Mahavishnu, maybe Return to Forever, and actually into a lot of late 60s rock like the Moody Blues and Jethro Tull. I was in high school, so my tastes were a little shall we say, prog-rocky in those days.

The Jakob Bro is lovely!
  10:03am
mic_a:

Oh yes, I was listening to all those proggies as well. But 1975 or 6 was a real pivot year when I started listening to Philly's WXPN, whose playlists of the time were right harmonious to our WFMU listening now. That, and somehow I got hold of a JEM Records mail order catalog (record import company in New Jersey) when they were dipping a semi-grudging toe into consumer mail order. Which would have been how I got hold of the Greasy Truckers album. (But I still have that original issue Tull "Living In The Past" with the quasi-hardcover book binding.)
  10:03am
Mark R:

Has ECM ever released a bad album. BTW just read a review of one of Keith Jarrett's last concerts in Budapest that was very praiseworthy but also bittersweet, because as you probably know, Keith has suffered a couple of strokes that probably mean his playing days are over.

@Mark R, that Budapest concert is very good, IMHO. In concerts of his later years, about half the "songs" sound like classical music.
  10:06am

Wea=ll, Gregory, he's improvising, so maybe he's half-remembering some concerto or other, or a phrase from one.

Certainly, @Mark R. He plays and records classical music too. I have his (ECM) record of Shostakovich preludes and fugues (one for every key), which I thought was tremendous. I cannot claim expertise in such things, though.

The vanishing of Sonny Simmons from the scene was, along with the disappearances of Giuseppi Logan, Abdul Wadud and Henry Grimes, one of those great, aching mysteries of the music. Joyously, all four were ultimately "found." But, miserably, only Wadud is still with us.

@doctorjazz: It was actually Dave Sewelson, when he had Amirtha Kidambi on his show. I may have oversold that one a bit, but her post did nudge me into buying her records with Lea Bertucci (didn't take much, I'm a Bertucci fan)

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:52am

@Jeff, it was a constant dilemma, to try to stick with a major label that disrespected you, or go with a tiny label with little PR and iffy distribution. (Of course, now major labels have dropped creative music entirely, making the decision much easier.)

One of the things that constantly amazes me about Dolphy is the breadth of emotions and flavors he expressed, from album to album, song to song, even within the same song. Truly one of the most gifted musicians of our time. I'm sorry I was too young to have ever seen him live.

Discogs is telling me that Music Matador was written by both Simmons and Prince Lasha. What's interesting about this record is that it has three instruments that Dolphy plays and it isn't immediately obvious that he isn't somehow playing all of them. The Ancient Ritual album has "Zarak Simmons" as drummer, and there is a Zarak Simmons from Seattle, which is where Barbara Donald ended up. (I'm guessing Zarak is Sonny's son, is my point.) And it's intriguing that Charles Moffett's son is the bassist on that same album.

@Mark R FWIW the sound quality on the Resonance issue is much improved over all those LP issues of Iron Man etc.

DJpeterDE:

Also I'll say this: the photos etc. in Resonance releases are tops. (The writing is often disappointing, although this release has good essay if I recall.)

Jeff Golick:

Zarak is indeed the son of Sonny Simmons and Barbara Donald.

@hyde: destination may be out, but make sure your dishes are not going down. Word to the wise

@DJpeterDE, I have to say that I am very tired of reissues with all the new essays and 87 new photos never before seen! The 2 or 3 discs now take up 4 inches of precious storage spacee. I would be interested in Dolphy photos, I guess, but for most of these sets, I just look at them once, and it's only the CDs that have continuing value to me.

Barbara Donald is my go-to "blindfold test" trumpeter if you want to blow someone's mind.

@LG I hear you. Some of the Resonance issues are not standard shelf size, either. Annoying!

Looked at the Resonance Matador (of course), same issue as Mark R, beliefs I have 2/3 of it, can I justify spending for the last third?

Completely irrelevant: While moving some LPs, I discovered I own the Atlantic record "Do the Twist with Ray Charles," complete with illustrations of foot and hand positions so that you can master this very difficult dance. Will have to try.

@doctorjazz FYI 2 dolphy alto sax solos (love me), a couple duets with Richard Davis, and then the ensemble recordings. i dig it, your mileage may vary.
