Never heard of the Allen Gentle LP. This fella here says it "fails" and calls the project's partnering a "miscalculation," though he finds interest and cause to compliment Szabo in the tracks you played written by the guitarist.

Hey Larry. This version of Eight Miles High really starts cooking when Gabor solos in the middle.

Mike Stax! Big fan of your musical (and written) work all the way back to the Crawdaddies...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:29pm
Funky16Corners:

@SBP - I like that album alot, but as you know I have a taste for Now Sound edging into kitsch, but I think a lot of that record stand on its own merits

Big news today! I’m glad I took a long break from work to enjoy the show!

Man I haven't seen those Doug Payne pages in forever. The original compositions on the Steve Allen LP are definitely the highlights.
Avatar 3:33pm

Heh, I like that. If someone asked, "Do you want to hear an album with the Now Sound edging into kitsch?" I'd be like, "Well, YES, I totally do!"
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:33pm
Funky16Corners:

Steve Allen had his tentacles in some really interesting stuff in the 60s
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:35pm
Little Danny:

@Larry: I feel like I've asked you this before, but have you heard the Advancement LP on Philips? One of vibraphonist Lynn Blessing's jazz vehicles, and one of the few recordings I've heard that really taps into the Szabo now-psychedelic-jazz aesthetic.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:35pm
Sem:

Gabor! Gabor!
I felt so sophisticated saying his name for the first time...
Hello, Larry, Testifiers, lurkers, and all.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:35pm

@Danny - I haven't, but Lynn Blessing was in Szabo's band for a while (at least on the Magical Connection LP)

Funky16Corners:

Hey Sem!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:36pm
Michael 98145:

  3:36pm
Mike Stax:

The Advancement album is amazing. It features Lou Kabok and Hal Gordon right after they left Gabor's group in '69. I have the full scoop in the next issue of Ugly Things. Big interview with Lou Kabok!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:36pm
Funky16Corners:

I always enjoy saying his name since I'm part Hungarian.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:37pm

@Michael - I'd be willing to be that a large percentage of the people that bought that album used got it to hang on their wall

Spent three weeks at a Budapest health spa. Didn't understand a word of the language, but a terrific good time.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:39pm
Funky16Corners:

Gabor doing a very Gary McFarland thing with the wordless vocals
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:39pm
Little Danny:

@Mike Stax: Awesome! I knew there was some overlap in personnel with the groups. Blessing's Jazz Corps LP with Roland Kirk has some dreamy moments, too, though with an otherwise different lineup IIRC.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:40pm
Funky16Corners:

All of which reminds me that I need to make some goulash next week...
  3:42pm
Mark R:

This is cool, I'd never heard the original "Gypsy Queen," only as the back half of Santana's "Black Magic Woman" jam.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:43pm
Funky16Corners:

Hey Mark! Yeah, it's kind of a revelation
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:46pm
Funky16Corners:

I may have to institute a 'Beat Goes On' rationing system. I seem to be playing it a lot.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:48pm
Michael 98145:

I'm sure i've bored you all with this story before ... but there is a small Sonny Bono shrine next to the escalator at the Palm Springs airport
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:48pm
Funky16Corners:

Official?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:48pm
Little Danny:

"Beat Goes On" is great, don't ration it, Larry!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:49pm
Funky16Corners:

@Mike Stax - Are there any other Szabo albums where he plays with a second guitarist?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:49pm
Michael 98145:

Official, yes. Mostly a bronze head on a pedestal.
Avatar 3:50pm
still b/p:

Who in your audience would advocate for rationing it? Or call the authorities for quota violations?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:50pm
Funky16Corners:

If only Sonny's real head had been that hard...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:50pm
Funky16Corners:

@SBP - I was just kidding. If I find more I'll play more. Remember, I did an all-Beat Goes On episode.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:51pm

Some velvet morning when you're straight Larry.
  3:52pm
Mike Stax:

Jimmy Stewart plays second guitar on The Sorcerer, More Sorcery, Bacchanal and Dreams. He played an acoustic, mostly classical and flamenco style picking. It contrasted so nicely with Gabor's amplified acoustic.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:52pm
Funky16Corners:

And of course Bobby Womack is playing rhythm guitar all through the High Contrast album.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:55pm
Funky16Corners:

Yes, though isn't he really close to an equal partner on that album?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:57pm
Michael 98145:

oh, yes. love this track.
  3:57pm
Mike Stax:

Yeah, Booby wrote or co-wrote most of the album. According to his book, he dashed off most of them in a few hours or right there in the studio, including "Breezin'." Not sure if I believe that!

Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:04pm
Funky16Corners:

If this piece sounds familiar, it's an adaptation of Manuel Da Falla's 'El Amor Brujo - Danza Ritual del Fuego' aka Ritual Fire Dance. A version of it pops up on the soundtrack to the TV series Fargo (I think season one)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:05pm
Funky16Corners:

Dig the story of the ballet from Wikipedia! "In De Falla's ballet, El amor brujo, a young Andalusian gypsy girl called Candela is haunted by the ghost of her dead husband. To get rid of him, all the gypsies make a large circle around their campfire at midnight. Candela then performs the Ritual Fire Dance. This causes the ghost to appear, with whom she then dances. As they whirl around faster and faster, the ghost is drawn into the fire, making it vanish forever"
