Splitting the atom IS easier. I haven't split an atom, but atom-splitting hasn't caused me nearly as much stress as trying to put a screw back in the arm of my glasses. Once I took a needle and thread to the glasses; this held them together for a day or so. But then, there were probably angels perched atop that needle.

Long ago I was in high school, at music camp, and the flutist in our orchestra told me, you've got to come hear Judy Collins, she's got a real voice. That flutist was right (and had and has a real voice too, flutewise and otherwise).

↳ Song: "John Riley" by "The Byrds"
5D was the BYrdS' first album as a quartet, without Songwriter GeneClark. So relying on Folk Standards along with going more Experimental were both distinguishing features - & a bug of necessity in 1966 for them. A brave album for the moment in any case. & all BYrdS is essential stuff where I sit...

McGuinn did work playing & arranging on early Folk albums for people in the genre before the BYrdS
- but not that JudyCollins debut, with quite spare instrumentation apparently :

Diana, have you ever read Arabia Felix by Thorkild Hansen? It's about an eighteenth-century Danish scientific expedition to Yemen and the personalities involved and the heartbreaks and bizarrnesses that befall them. And along the way Cuneiform is translated for the first time. A really wonderful book.

I have always gone through the site, maybe log in first (not sure it makes a difference)
Log in first to see whether your renewal appears, and see it you can access the digital issue. They'll probably ask, but they've always been helpful with me (unlike Ploughshares, who have sent me 1 issue out of the last 5, and I had to argue to get digital access, which was included in my subscription)

The same author has another book about Jens Munk, a Danish sailor and explorer who got to the Hudson Bay trying to find a Northwest Passage for the king of Denmark and ended up icebound with his crew. There's an archipelago there named for him. Amazing stuff.

Henry of Livonia's Chronicle of the "Northern Crusade" to convert the Lett and Lapps is pretty fantastic. Twelfth-century. Lots of pretend conversion in order to get the metal and other goods the priests had and then getting annoyed by them and pelting them with burning poop and goats until they fled into the river.

↳ Song: "Čiūto, Čiūto, Čiūtyta Čiūto" by "Kūlgrinda"
"The band owes its name to kūlgrinda – a secret Samogitian underwater causeway. Kūlgrinda's music typically consists of straightforward folk music performances with little studio enhancement and a focus on the vocal performances. It has specialised on sutartinės, a traditional form of polyphonic song-chant where several vocalists perform interlocking melodies that through rhythmic repetition create a pattern of musical expression. The musicologist Daiva Račiūnaitė-Vyčinienė has compared this technique to the weaving of a multicoloured cloth."
