The Bruckner: Is it on the Intercord label? If so, I doubt it was recorded as late as 1992. The record was released on CD in '88 or '89, a reissue of a much earlier LP release.

Adsmdoesit, I'm with you, it's not just Arts, I just mentioned that because it related to the specific article. But I feel I don't see international, tech, most other things as in the print version (I still get the print version, but often don't have the luxury of sitting down turning pages. Like to do that Sundays when I can, weekdays I often just catch articles between other activities). I wonder if they have some algorithm like Facebook, listing what they think you'll want to read (this year it almost always does me politics/Trump, and COVID-19 related articles).

Doctorjazz, the Times does have such an algorithm, developed under the (execrable) name Project Feels. It's done well for them -- online business is booming -- but it's the opposite of the sober reporting, delivered without regard for my apparent preferences, that I count on them to deliver.

(Also, no apologies necessary - I read typo fluently, and make more than my own share.)

Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:28pm
adamdoesit:

Innit tho? Naturally, they blog about it: open.nytimes.com...

Plugging that in to the fleeing-the-city thread, COVID meant that I'd only see a paper Times once a week, after a 15-ish mile drive or bike ride… neither practicable or worth it as an everyday thing. When I did get and read the physical Saturday edition, I was shocked by how much better informed I seemed to be. It was like a whole different paper.

Happy new year, coelacanth∅!

does that mean i have to be 21 to be here Stork?

Dean:

Been reading a bit lately about the use of machine learning and other data science tools in humanities research. It is (and has been for a very long time) a fascinating topic, but obviously the technology is nowhere near the promise some advocates anticipate. Looks like the NYT pretty clearly subscribes to the "good enough" model of design. But I love the ambiguity of "Project." Noun? Verb?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:35pm

Happy New Year, Stork. Diggin' the sounds.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:37pm
coelacanth∅:

"machine learning"...that could mean any of several things but either way it sounds like something i should learn about so i can develop a plan to put an end to it

Ike:

Hi there! Batiste is not great at bantering with Colbert every night, but he’s a heck of a good musician.
Avatar 2:43pm
Stork:

Ike: Colbert is perhaps the worst banterer I've ever seen, though I like him a lot. Terrible interviewer in general, and awkward as hell with Batiste. He should stop the lame attempts at chat, and let Batiste and the band play - a LOT more. Actually can't wait for Jon to quit the show and go do even more amazing stuff. He is exceptional.
Avatar 2:45pm
Stork:

Hey, Rusty! HNY atcha, babe!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:46pm

Dean, I'd never thought of it as project (v). That fits my experience of the thing, and my resentment of it, like the proverbial nitrile glove.

I'm not carding tonight, coel.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:48pm

that's good Stork cuz i'd like to hang; but on the other hand i've already pounded 4 drinks so i'd be laughing as i got kicked out!

That Haden-Anderson album is really nice (and the Naim recording is also very nice).
Michele Petrucciani also had Osteogenesis Imperfecta. Nasty illness.

Roach! BOOM! My ear are eagerly awaiting next Sunday!

That was David Friesen, adamdoesit, who it turn also played with seemingly everyone.

Have a ton of Zorn stuff (but there must be 3 or 4 tons out there), don't have this, really nice!

Wait, how do you get Colbert in Germany? Does some channel carry it there, or do you just “sail the high seas” of the net?
Avatar 3:08pm
Stork:

It's on Youtube, Ike. I kinda can't watch him anymore. I root for him, but he has just not cut it in lockdown. He looks lost and it's painful.

John Foxx on this track: John Lennon much?

i thought it sounds more like Julian Lennon...

coelacanth∅:

digging this Walkhausen and Stockman
- new to me
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:14pm
Ike:

I still like him but yeah, he’s really leaning into the awkwardness and some of the jokes are too corny. He probably misses his audience. John Oliver is better, though doing only one ep a week probably helps a lot there.
Avatar 3:15pm
Stork:

@coelacanth∅: that was some stuff S&Walkman had sitting around for decades that he relased last year. Great stuff throughout.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:19pm

Thanks for the tunes today, Storkorino. I loved every note. Looking forward to next week's Max Roach birthday broadcast. I guess we'll learn then whether you researched it all yourself, or paid a visit to the Roach coach. Happy new year, everybody!
