Even before the Internet upended the Distribution model
- the Corporations & Monopolies had changed it to a Top Down market. Instead of making a single in your garage & getting on a local station & maybe then getting national attention - the companies for Recording & Broadcasting alike had all been bought by bigger Corporations who knew nothing about either Art or Audience. Republicans deregulated how many media outlets could be owned by one Corporation...

Music especially seems unsubstantial - here & gone. Probly especially since going Digital without hard copy.
It's exactly when things are hardest the Homo sapiens needs Art & Music the most !
People don't understand this about even themselves. We're not machines or work animals. We're the Ape that needs Meaning.

Vanessa - Calvinism ! Yes. Reminded again of 'Dancing In the Streets' by Barbara Ehrenreich. & everything Terence McKenna said about the wrong turns human civilization took & the Archaic Revival.

@tim - yes, i live in vancouver canada, but work (from home) for a library system in a suburb east of the city: coquitlam, bc
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:33pm

I think when music is art is not valued by society as a whole it's too easy for commerce to replace the place of music and art. Which is pretty much where we're at in our country.
  5:34pm

@ revolution rabbit (great handle!) - yes, and canada's better, but the calvinistic elements are even deeper

@Vanessa: It's as if this society financially values most the people who contribute the least to our lives (e.g., investment bankers), and values least the people that help us thrive (teachers, librarians, artists, cooks, nurses, etc.)

@Vanessa - very cool. I'm a little south of you. I work for a county library system west of seattle. I RA, make selections and deliveries to primarily home bound patrons.
  5:36pm
Vanessa:

commerce/capitalism cuts away parts of ourselves and sells them back to those of us (huge interests like universal entertainment) who can afford them ... the rest of us are supposed to just be spiritually hungry and consume useless goods to compensate for this huge loss
  5:38pm
PJ:

@Vanessa: the tech industry is one large scam, selling access to "content" (the things people actually enjoy) and refusing any responsibility to compensate the artists who have made them rich.
  5:38pm
Sean:

Nothing but sympathy and fear for artists having to try and make a go of it these days. Kinda wondering though... The booming recording industry of the 90s and earlier was widely cursed for being exploitive and screwing artist over. Even many indie lables.

Clearly the internet was not the solution to the problems of the pre-intermet recording industry. But i wonder if nostalgia has colored your impression of the old days.

I think the world we need has yet to be invented.
  5:39pm
Vanessa:

@ tim - i train frontline staff and provide them with resources to better their skills and confidence; i also collab with other departments on a variety of tasks, do virtual reading recommendations, etc
  5:41pm
PJ:

@Sean: The pre-Napster world was not halcyon days for musicians, but it was a lot easier to make a middle class living for indie musicians and major label musicians alike. If your label had screwed you over, you could at least sue them. There is no recourse against YouTube.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:43pm
Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Sheila Chandra's spoken word track accompanying her 'BoneCroneDrone' album is one of my favorite articulations of the Creative Process
- & the relation of the Creative Artist to the Other.
People are spooked by the act of seemingly making something from nothing!
  5:43pm
Vanessa:

@sean - valid points ... also, most people never hear the true breadth and depth and what is and was out there musically (and filmically) as the entertainment monopolies get behind a few artists and bury the rest ... it really shows in the shallowness of many people sometimes, no sense of history or the present and hence not much vision for the future

A wonderful interview.
I share your feelings about the sad lack of support for our artists. A callous insensitivity has over taken so many aspects of our life.
Your comment about how things must be quantified to have validity rings sadly true in my experience.
Thank you for your great interviews, music and compassion.

Vanessa that's profound. Maybe it's a reckoning for Pop itself - which always has clung to being ephemeral & transient... (JohnLydon's rhetoric about the Pistols & all of Rawk relevant here...) While Orwell made explicit that the most effective destruction of a people is to destroy their Past...

On the bright side, places like WFMU are broadening horizons. In the last two years I have started listening and it is wonderful to discover so much music relatively later in life. it is out there, just have to push a bit hard to find it.
