With billows and blasts from choirs and orchesters
Buskers and talkers
Big bands and squawkers,
the Stork Club has retained its qualities of decaying elegance and dwindling significance since the late 1950s.

Kettle on, grind the coffee.
Water on for oats.
Feed the kitty (sometimes this comes first, depending how far her breakfast campaign has advanced).
Pour hot water into coffee pot, stir.
Whisk oats into boiling salted water.
Stir oats meditatively for several minutes, while coffee brews and cat flings her food around.
Plunge coffee. Cover oats and turn off burner.
Retreat to bedroom with coffee, to proceed with the wakening.
After the dog is walked, oats are stirred, warmed, mixed with fruit, nuts, maple syrup, peanut butter, etc., and consumed with the last gulp of coffee.
