The vocalist Mark Murphy does a fantastic version of this song
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:27pm
Funky16Corners:

Pretty hot band, too, and with the exception of Lenny White, could be any Blue Note session in the 60s
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:32pm
Funky16Corners:

It's important to note, as well that even though many of these musicians are working with electric instruments, very little of this qualifies as jazz rock or fusion. It's really sui generis.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 3:33pm
Brian in UK:

Jazz funk was popular over here for a while, like the next pod along the line.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:34pm
Funky16Corners:

I know that a lot of it made it onto UK dancefloors
Avatar 3:35pm
Listening Out There:

"Fusion" wasn't always a bad word. Just most of the time...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:36pm
Funky16Corners:

I don't have anything against it, but it suggests rockers trying to play jazz or jazzers rocking out, and almost none of the CTI stuff I know falls into those categories
Avatar 3:36pm
mauri:

I think about 1000 people liked it here in Finland. But where in here? hehe. Evening greetings!
Avatar 3:37pm

Fusion was pretty much the pre cursor of smooth jazz and a modern take on regular jazz in my opinion.

One good thing about so many CTI recordings: Billy Cobham
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:40pm
Matt from New Orleans:

The CTI stuff that made it into the Jazz Dance scene repertoire was really fast paced stuff like this. Just like the Northern dancers, they liked it fast so they could really show off their moves.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:40pm
Funky16Corners:

Speaking of which, later this month I'll be doing two weeks of "Freed Samples" i.e. all kinds of records that were sampled for rap, turntablism etc

@Brian - I think Idris was responsible for some New Orleans cats making their way onto CTI records
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:50pm
Funky16Corners:

This is a great album. Laws covers Pink Floyd, the Monkees, the Bee Gees and the Beatles
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:57pm
Matt from New Orleans:

I don’t think George Davis ever was a sideman on CTI but he recorded on a bunch of similar sort of soul jazz/jazz fusion albums in the early 70s.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:58pm
Funky16Corners:

I have a funk 45 by a New Orleans trumpeter named Hack Bartholomew on CTI. One-off, never did anything else for them
  4:01pm
Gerry from Miami:

@Funky16Corners I second your sentiments about Mark Murphy's vocal version of "Red Clay." Fantastic! Elling is the only other jazz singer I can think of who could keep up with him. SMOOTH JAZZ and WAVE formats on radio stations across the country were playing records that squeezed everything out of "real" jazz that makes it so great, in my opinion. CTI's run was a good one, for the most part. After all, these gifted musicians were just trying to earn a decent living. Ask Herbie Hancock! He's done it all!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:02pm
Funky16Corners:

Hey Gerry! I got to see Elling perform a few times back in the day. What a voice!

Another great cover of "Red Clay," albeit not vocal, is Jack Wilkins' on his 1973 Windows album.

I'm not familiar with him, I'll have to look him up
  4:12pm
Dean:

He even made an appearance on CTI: https://www.discogs.com/Jack-Wilkins-Opal/release/9038966
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:13pm
Little Danny:

Nice call Dean. Some lesser-known '70s jazz musicians got oddball LP releases on Mainstream in that period. That's a good one.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:14pm
Funky16Corners:

It's funny, that Mainstream album cover reminds of a a couple of other titles on the label, The lame designs kind of run together

Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:16pm

Totally. I'd guess in the '70s Shad & co. were taking a budget swipe at the bold CTI graphic aesthetic, actually.

A friend of mine in LA who happened to be my mailman for several years loved his jazz guitar! Gabor, Wes, Joe Pass, Jim Hall. I had to introduce him to McLaughlin, Coryell, DiMeola, Metheny and some of the more contemporary guys back in the 70s. He ended up loving their music as well as his old standbys.

Szabo was really a unique player. I don't think he ever worked with a fully electric guitar

I think Keith Jarrett has some Hungarian heritage. So sad about Keith's inability to use his left hand anymore. He doubts he will ever perform again. Joni Mitchell also has severe problems with her hands and fingers, so her guitar and piano playing days may be over as well.
