Andrew White was a wonderful and odd bird. The walls of his home office were legendarily plastered from floor to ceiling with pin-up photos. A ribald streak ran parallel to his bountiful sonic achievements.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:46am
Doug Schulkind:

That tune Adagio was from an album White dedicated to a French Lady named Jocelyn. That was his wife, the former Jocelyn Uhl, who predeceased him several years ago.

Andrew White played lived constantly in Washington, D.C., and he recorded himself incessantly and released dozens of his performances as LPs.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:56am
Doug Schulkind:

Another stalwart player in D.C. was (is) the bass player Steve Novosel. He appears on almost every one of Andrew White's records. Novosel was Roberta Flack's first husband.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:59am
Doug Schulkind:

White once presented a marathon live concert at the Top O' Foolery Club in Washington. It lasted 12 hours and different rhythm sections jumped in at different points to back him up. He released the entire performance on a series of recordings.

Morning Chris in Durban!

Welcome aboard, chresti!

Doug - the Afrosynth publishing date is 2020
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:48am
Irene Trudel:

Just found the session with Guy: www.newsounds.org... This Thandi Ntuli track is nice too.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:49am
Doug Schulkind:

@Chris Albertyn
I think I found the original recording date to be 2016. I prefer to put the date of the recording rather than the date of the release.
Avatar 10:50am
Chris Albertyn:

Irene, the compilation is a great window on SA jazz in 2020 afrosynth.bandcamp.com
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:51am
Doug Schulkind:

I found it on Thandi Ntuli's Bandcamp page: thandintuli.bandcamp.com...
Avatar 10:51am
Chris Albertyn:

I believe you Doug, thanks
Avatar 10:53am
Chris Albertyn:

Thanks Irene for the newsounds link - I look forward to checking it out
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:53am
Irene Trudel:

Thanks for the Thandi link, @Doug! Gotta check out more.
Avatar 10:54am
Chris Albertyn:

Thandi Ntuli is the niece of Selby Ntuli, founding member of the Beaters and then Harari in the 70s
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:54am
Doug Schulkind:

@Chris
It's just a particular quirk of mine. Generally on the playlist I try to post the original recording/date. Most DJs just present whatever source they are playing from. My style is probably confusingly unnecessary.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:56am
Doug Schulkind:

@Chris A
Starting off my next set will be the South African group The Black Hawks. I believe one of the members (was it Charlie Ndlovu?) went on to found or at least join Harari.

OK, getting to listen for the final hour. Really like The Healer!

Mx. Granny (e/em):

Doug: i think a lot of folx appreciate that. Uncle Michael does that, too, including the format in which it was released; like shellac! Such a cool education.
Avatar 10:58am
Chris Albertyn:

Thanks all for listening in, it has been fun sharing these selections with you. Next time December 25? I promise nothing Christmassy, but certainly upbeat and cheerful. Peace! Stay safe

Thanks, Chris!

@Mx Granny
I just prefer presenting original source material and info whenever possible.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:59am
Irene Trudel:

Beautiful music as always, @Chris! Thank you, and I look forward to next month.

Yup, I was confused early on by the way UM listen tracks ("you really have that 78?"), But I got to like it once I understood the system.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:59am

Spring in Durban!
Avatar 11:00am

doctorjazz - in this case, yes, I really do have those 78s (If I understood your question correctly)

Listener Gregory:

It's a sad commentary on my own expectations that I am always surprised by the incredible diversity of the music Chris brings here. Thanks for opening my (our?) eyes, Chris. Also, ears.

Dean:

In fact you can hold back spring. But when you release it...B-O-I-N-G!

This Zambian band is named WITCH, which is an acronym for:

We

Havoc
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:09am
Franco Twinkie:

Havoc now.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:11am
Doug Schulkind:

Have another havoc, Franco Twinkie! And another!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:11am
Irene Trudel:

@Doug, I just realized I have a 4 CD set by WITCH, which I acquired from my workplace before the pandemic hit and haven't listened to yet. Now I have no excuse!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:12am
Doug Schulkind:

@Irene Trudel
You will dig it! My fave LP of theirs is Lazy Bones.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:13am
Doug Schulkind:

I tried Googling for more info on the Les Rross orch. and came up with bupkis.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:14am
Doug Schulkind:

I ascertained that they recorded for Decca West Africa, and that's about it.
Avatar 11:14am
Listener Gregory:

I looked for Les Rross and came up with Nnada.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:17am

Les is more, Listener Gregory
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 11:18am
dutchtheo:

Les Rross orch from Benin is the only information i can find, (now)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:20am
Doug Schulkind:

@dutchtheo
The Original Music compilation Money No Be Sand identifies Les Rross as being from Nigeria. Original Music were wonderful, but honestly, they made a lot of mistakes in what little discographical info they provided.

Eh Bien Mon Ami is all right--it's outa sight.

Beneath the Les Rross vid posted on YT.. there is one comment, correcting the poster re the band's country of origin. Perhaps try reaching out to the person who knew they were from Benin? Ya never know.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:25am
Doug Schulkind:

@Really Lisa
I gotta check that out. I am now officially on a mission. Must get to the bottom of the Les Rross mystery. (A mystery in my mind only.)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:26am
Doug Schulkind:

Oh my freaking God do I adore this Wrinkar Experience track!!! All-time fave!!!!!!!
Avatar 11:26am

It will be quite a mission, Doug.. that comment was from 4 yrs ago. But anyone who has a YT channel just might be reachable!

Uncle Michael, you assume I have and wear stretch pants. Of course I do; now and then.

Did I just hear the phone ring?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:28am

Also, good morning Doug, hey everyone!
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 11:28am

that was not a 1972 phone:)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:29am
ParUbi:

Those marimbas almost work, though
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:29am
Doug Schulkind:

That was my fucking phone. Which rang even though I have it on Do Not Disturb. It paired with the computer that is running the show. Veerrrrrryyy embarrassing.
Avatar 11:30am
TDK60:

Doug, a show with such havoc is unacceptable, except on Fridays.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:30am

Now you know we're listening!

So glad you're out there, neighbor ParUbi! So glad you are all out there and right here with me!
  11:36am
Irene:

@Doug, agreed. Your Friday morning show is indeed a sanctuary from the crazy.
Avatar 11:37am
Listener Gregory:

Doug, if you can play "Watching the Rainbow" when the other side is "Miss Frankenstein," you have greater self-control than I do. I have to leave to get in my walk while it is still cloudy and gloomy. See you next week, and thanks!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:37am
Doug Schulkind:

Coming up next on your 24-hour Drummer Stream is fan favorite Uncle Michael aka DJ Sweatypants! All manner of mayhem and (continued) havoc are in store for all who stay tuned for HINKY DINKY TIME.

More havoc here: wfmu.org...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:38am
Doug Schulkind:

@Irene
Or at the very least, a wholly different crazy.
  11:38am
Andy S.:

Was "Watching The Rainbow" (great track) recorded by the same George Jackson who wrote "Old Time Rock and Roll" for Bob Seger and wrote/recorded "Aretha, Sing One For Me."
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:39am
Doug Schulkind:

Always a thrill to have you at the party, Andy S! Yes, Mr. Jackson was a hugely talented fellow.
Avatar 11:42am

i like looking up these people, and finding that Lillian Dorr was in the Vonettes. But NOT the Vonettes that recorded on Cobblestone. Easy mistake to make
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:42am
Doug Schulkind:

Seems I put together a rather doo-woppy soul set to close the show. Mostly just so I get to use the phrase doo-woppy.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:43am
Doug Schulkind:

So many Vonettes!
  11:46am

I don't know who "Pete Cooke" is or was, but he could really HOLLA.
