Carpenters  Merry Christmas, Darling   Favoriting Carpenters Christmas Portrait  A&M  1978  LP  On the way to the station tonight I heard this song broadcasting - LOUDLY - at one a.m. from outdoor speakers in front of a darkened pizzeria next to the Grove Street Dunkin' Donuts. First released in November 1970, it's an exemplary example of a war-time song for lonely G.I.s.

Soldier In the Rain   Favoriting Best of Mancini, Vol. Two  RCA  1966  Vinyl  The early Sixties were Hank's best years; good films, great tunes. "Soldier In the Rain" starred Jackie Gleason, Steve McQueen & Tuesday Weld & was essentially a sad comedy about the routine life of the peacetime soldier just prior to Vietnam. One critic complained that the movie makes you think something great is about to happen, but it never does. Which is exactly what I like about it. & the lovely Tuesday calling Gleason "jellybelly," with affection.
