Interesting article about The Beatles in the NYT, Feb. 17, 1964, McCandlish Phillips, "Publicitywise: How They Grew, Publicity Wise," mentions the Paar appearance: "Jack Paar was also in England when the Beatles made it big there, and he brought back a video tape that he played on his television show on Jan. 3 -- well ahead of the live appearance on the Sullivan show five weeks later."

I was a kid (5 to 10 yo) for the disco era. Didn’t mind it much. It seemed sexy, if slightly shallow and kind of flaky. Young adults partying, no Vietnam, no hippies, no baggage.

I haven't heard the podcast about "grunge" getting bumped by boy bands and teen acts yet, but I remember vividly the period around 1996-1999 because I was playing in a band...and listening to the radio (and MTV) seemed to switch from bands and artists who played guitars and wrote their own songs to the pop princesses like Britney, Christina, etc and boy bands. These acts had songwriting "teams" of sometimes 6 people and hot dance moves instead of a legit band playing, writing, and singing with real drummers and loud guitars. I knew it was over for guitar bands actually making the charts. Grunge was and still is such an overblown and misleading term, it's meaningless.

songwriting teams isn't always a bad thing. the Monkees and Motown had songwriting teams. And some of the commercial rock bands I heard from 1996-99 could have used a songwriting team or two.

  12:57pm
gf2002:

No those teams aren't necessarily a bad thing, but it got ridiculous when it took more than 2 pro writers (as The Monkees usually had on these teams) to make a pop hit.

"These acts had songwriting "teams" of sometimes 6 people" If people like phil spector and motown were properly crediting people, they would have had 6 people as well. for example, neither goffin nor king wrote the guitar riff for pleasant valley sunday, and that makes the song
