Musical theater from off the beaten path. Obscure and unusual show tunes from within the canon and without, flops, failures, and the newest works from up-and-coming artists—plus tried-and-true hits. Also, occasional appearances from songs that are not show tunes (but only if they go really well with show tunes).

I am rereading Gravity's Rainbow, with a helpful guide which tells me that Thomas Pynchon hates Noel Coward, and negative references to him can be found back to his first short stories and at various places in Gravity's Rainbow.
This knowledge will surely come in handy some day.

E.G., when someone is acting overly civilized, a character asks, "Is this Noel Coward or some shit?" (Please excuse my French.)

@diciassette, very interesting! Pynchon is not easy going. The helpful guide brings out a lot of things I wouldn’t notice and also explains how carefully structured the book is. But it’s not for everyone.

Hey Henry, we just had a not since carrie special lol

Love these 20s choruses!
Avatar 7:45pm
Bronwyn Bishop:

hard to believe it's been 100 years since some since of the great musical theatre writers got their start
Avatar 🎭 7:47pm

Those chesty voices were super popular back in the 20s, but I find them borderlines listenable today.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:49pm

I used to have a piano roll (and matching reproducing piano) of "Selections from Sunny"
Avatar 🎭 7:50pm

I guess we can thank Fred Astaire and Bing Crosby for changing that.

I discovered Elaine Stritch on 30 Rock, and I have been in awe ever since!
Avatar 7:58pm

Elaine Stritch Fact: She was the first choice to play Ursula in The Little Mermaid, but was fired because she kept fighting with Howard Ashman

If you can see the film Let’s Get Lost (about Chet Baker), do so!
Avatar 🎭 Swag For Life Member 8:32pm
diciassette:

I will definitely definitely. I saw Chet Baker in a bathtub in a Mina video! (which was from a movie that is hard to find around here)
Avatar 🎭 8:35pm
Listener Gregory:

It may be hard to find. I believe there were problems with music rights or something, and so it may not have made it onto DVD. For some time it was impossible to find, but hopefully that’s been resolved.
