Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:08pm mariano:

Phillippe: yes, that line has always bothered me! I know it fits the meter, but I've always wondered why this new wave she speaks of stopped somewhere around Sacramento.

East California is Palm Springs or Lake Tahoe maybe?

Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:25pm spodiodi:

mariano, how are ya? glad you're back!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:27pm David (in London):

Mariano - Have you ever seen their one outing in the horror genre, 'Dead of Night'? Parts of that are still genuinely unsettling. A bloody masterpiece. Otherwise, I think 'Kind Hearts and Coronets' is probably my favie.
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 12:28pm tim from champaign (now washington):

Whoa! I love The Undertones!
  12:31pm Squeaky Dave:

Nice segue and one of my favorite Undertones songs.
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 12:31pm tim from champaign (now washington):

Jimmy Jimmy and My Perfect Cousin are the best.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:31pm mariano:

Heya spodi, thanks! Good to be back. David: "Kind Hearts" was the first one of the ECs I saw, and was the beginning of my Alec Guinness infatuation. I really love "The Man in the White Suit" too, lovely modern parable. "A Run for Your Money" has one of my favorite lines, said by one of the Welsh protagonists when he couldn't order a pint because he'd just missed last call: "You and your Saxon laws! If a pint's right at one time why's it wrong at another?" I have not however seen "Dead of Night" and I'll have to add it to the top of my list, appreciate the tip.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:32pm Laura in Peekskill:

No! The best are Get Over You and You've Got My Number.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:32pm Cal Zone!:

Love the Undertones!
  12:32pm Joe M:

Wait...Jerry’s still abusing customers?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:33pm Cal Zone!:

You've got my NUMBER, why don't you USE IT!....is my personal fave

Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:35pm Laura in Peekskill:

Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 12:35pm tim from champaign (now washington):

Joe - Are you familiar with Nick Rudd? He was a Champaign musician who worked with Paul Chastain, Velvet Crush, Adam Schmidt et al over the years.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:36pm Laura in Peekskill:

This pre-GC stuff just kills me. (In a good way.)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:37pm Gaylord Fields:

The Undertones never released a single that is anything less than good, and some are the best of the era. I own every single, every LP — even that strange last one. (Also, hi, Joe!)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:37pm Mike Sin:

Hi Joe! The Red Lights -- new to me. Didn't know about it.
Avatar 12:38pm Joe B:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:38pm Sweet Corn Lizzie:

Avatar 12:40pm Todd-o-phonic Todd:

@Gaylord Fields: You own every Undertones single and one Rolling Stones single! Not a complaint, merely an observation.
Avatar 12:41pm Joe B:

hey ashley!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:42pm Laura in Peekskill:

I don't know for sure, Joe, but I doubt it--seems like People Who Would Know (frinstance. various WFMU DJs) would know.
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 12:42pm tim from champaign (now washington):

I've been really digging the Red Lights too. Now I'm really curious to know how the change of direction happened toward to swamp blues of Gun Club.

Avatar 12:46pm Joe B:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:48pm Handy Haversack:

Avatar 12:48pm Joe B:

so which is the one stones single gaylord owns?
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 12:48pm tim from champaign (now washington):

@Todd - I have a needle in a haystack question. A few months ago you played this super rad Aussie trio who are super young. They have an Eddie Current vibe. Can you place them? I meant to check them out but spaced on their name big time.
Swag For Life Member 12:48pm PeterD:

Hey Joe!!! Hey Esther!!! Yeah, I'm finding hard to relax, too. I may fry up a batch of honeyslides and sleep until Weds.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:33pm mariano:

I don't know what honeyslides are either, but based on the name I'd eat one no questions asked. Speaking of snacks with alluring names, time for some more of that yummy cinnabar...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:33pm JG:

i can imagine this as an ELO song
  1:33pm John L:

Honeyslides are something I read about in a Neil Young bio. Described as " a goop of sauteed marijuana and honey." You'd have to look online for the exact recipe. I tired it once and was out of it for two days.
  1:33pm eric from lake hiawatha:

@JG totally ELO
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:34pm Cal Zone!:

I was going to say...wow, this sounds just like Helen Reddy...and sure enuff....she had a great voice which elevated her material which was often questionable...but always hooky.
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 1:34pm James in ATL:

Aloha Joe! Thanks for the distraction! Much needed today.
  1:35pm John L:

"Tried it" I meant to write. Sorry, I have tired eyes.
  1:36pm Esther Crow:

LOL John, sounds up my alley! I'm all stocked up on green treats from a recent trip to MA. I like your thinking: knock ourselves out til Weds. Tho ideally-- from now until end of Jan would be EVEN BETTER.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:37pm Handy Haversack:

Esther Crow, I tried a new Quarantini on Fri. (or new to me, at least), a Black Feather: 2 oz brandy, 1 oz dry vermouth, .5 oz. Cointreau (or other triple sec), dash Angostura bitters, stir with ice, serve up w/orange peel garnish. Really good!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:37pm coelacanth∅:

i still love this album. sadly the last good elo album, for me anyway.

Another good one for fall: the Little Italy (basically a Manhattan with Cynar in it; hence, the name): 2 oz rye, .75 oz sweet verm, .5 oz cynar, stir w/ ice, serve up, cherry garnish.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:41pm WoodsOfNH (now Maine):

@Handy Stop it! Yer makin' me thirsty.
Avatar 1:42pm Julie:

that ELO song was awesome

Can't believe I've seen ELO 5x now. Of all the unicorns I never thought I'd see, that one is probably my favorite.

So much Neil archived its hard to keep it all in context. So what is this? ALternate studio take? ANd what is Homefires?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:06pm coelacanth∅:

Joe like so many others they jumped on the "new wave" bandwagon -the fake, forced "attitude" i hated all that! but they still had some good songs, for sure.
i lost track of 'em though

Joe, One positive with the lack of touring is that Neil Young is cranking out the vaults.

Panic was setting in around here, Joe!
  2:16pm Dungaroos Kipawah:

Wonder if Neil recorded the day that Dylan came to Point Dume and supposedly CH backed Dylan playing all the "Blood on the Tracks" stuff--think they talk about that in SHAKEY, it's one of the dreams I hold out for--Crazy Horse playing "Idiot Wind"
Avatar 2:16pm Joe B:

handy, imagine how jim price felt!

Woah....this Songhoy Blues is killer. Kind of has a 75 Dollar Bill thing going on...plus other stuff.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:19pm nickybones:

man, i really need to re-read Shakey...
  2:22pm Dungaroos Kipawah:

I don't have SHAKEY handy but found this online. I seem to remember that they tried out BOTT material, too. Anyway: "Dylan, who lived around the corner from Briggs, shuffled in and joined the Zuma sessions, first on piano, then on guitar. "He didn't talk, just nodded" said Sampedro. "He was dressed in Sears clothes. I don't know it was Dylan". "and I don't know he was so short" mused Ralph. The action packed line-up fizzled when the Horse inevitably fell apart. We did a bunch of his songs, never got one right all the way through" said Poncho. "Neil told me later Dylan said 'your band has a good beat, but they can't play' and Neil replied 'heah, but think about it, Bob, you could play with them ....' ". (from 'Shakey', p : 488)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:22pm Greg from ZONE 5:

Heard 2 Neil tracks in a row and had to check to make sure he was still with us!
Avatar 2:22pm Joe B:

my main problem with shakey was the author's lack of insight into the actual music. he did a good job reporting but his actual music writing i thought wasn't very good. that's what put the replacements book over the top - bob mehr could report and write well, but also leaps and bounds above mcdonagh in terms of music criticism and connecting it to the story
Avatar 2:23pm Joe B:

@Woods - they have a great live set with rob weisberg in the archives!
  2:24pm WFMU listener j:

Hello fellow three chord monte listeners
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:24pm Handy Haversack:

Hey, Dungaroos K!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:24pm WoodsOfNH (now Maine):

@Joe B: Cool, thanks! Will have to check that out.
  2:25pm Dungaroos Kipawah:

Yes, good on stories and frank talk (and also recipes), but weak in other spots--and some things McDonough hates passionately seemed inexplicable. Mehr's Replacements book is the gold standard of rock bios.
  2:26pm Dungaroos Kipawah:

@Handy--hey hey, how're you maintaining? Sending along the usu good wishes.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:26pm nickybones:

Joe B: TOTALLY agree. It was good for incredible historical facts and stuff, but when he'd weigh in with his opinion, i found it grating.
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 2:26pm tim from champaign (now washington):

That is a weird phenomenon that shows up in music bios when you can tell that the author doesn't quite have a connection to the music. I can't think of another example right now but I've run across that before.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:28pm medson:

Hola Joe B and everyone.
Avatar 2:29pm Joe B:

well it's not easy. having tried and failed miserably at music writing, easier said than done. i don't doubt mcdonagh's passion for the music but analyzing it and really connecting it to the story is not easy. he did incredible reporting so the book was worth it but very few can do both - the reporting, and the music criticism
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:30pm Handy Haversack:

We're hanging in, DK, thanks, pal! We're planning an amphibious assault on Manhttan tomorrow -- we'll pass by Mona's so we can think of better times. Hope you're doing OK. If you hear from Bill or Ziggy (or Roma!), please give them our best!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:30pm chris_in_space:

I'll have to read Mehr's book, but I loved Shakey for precisely what many are citing as a flaw. I find endless opinions about lyrics and such to be boring, ie. most of the 33 1/3 series of books. Just give me the stories behind the music; I'll interpret the songs in my own way.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:30pm coelacanth∅:

Woods @219 the first thing i thought of was oh well (fleetwood mac) but yes 75$bill for sure

Avatar 2:32pm Joe B:

"I find endless opinions about lyrics and such to be boring,' not what i am talking about at all
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:32pm nickybones:

contender for song of the year, this Bully track!
  2:32pm Dungaroos Kipawah:

With all that, I love SHAKEY for what it is--there's so many good inside stories. Unique in the weird NY book shelf. @Handy: good to hear, I'll pass on the regards, talk to Z fairly regularly, at least.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:32pm Handy Haversack:

Mariano -- Kate had the same reaction!
Avatar 2:32pm Joe B:

mcdonagh does try to analyze the music, and is bad at it
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:33pm chris_in_space:

@Joe B fair enough. Like I said, I haven't read Mehr's book. I suppose I just interpreted something that wasn't intended. The problem with language, I guess.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:33pm nickybones:

@DK it's maybe the best rock bio book I've ever read. Like, a reference source to go back to while listening to the records. I found the same with Behind the Shades, the Dylan bio.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:33pm mariano:

This Bully just gave me a musical wedgie. In a good way.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:35pm JG:

Yeah i enjoyed the look behind the curtain that Shakey offered. Such weird crazy unique and talented guy Neil
Avatar 2:35pm Joe B:

i mean, thousands of people like mcdonagh. that's how he got access. and i'm sure he did a much better job than i could ever do. he just would have been betetr off keeping his opinions out of it if he could not weave them into the narrative in a good way
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 2:37pm tim from champaign (now washington):

I've found that I really prefer oral histories when it comes to music history. I like the multiple perspectives as well as capturing a lot of things that get left out of rock bios. Please Kill Me is my favorite example.
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 2:37pm brycepunk1:

That Bully track was awesome!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:37pm Alvy Singer:

Bully sure sounds a bit like Osees
Avatar 2:37pm Joe B:

the replacements book - you get a accurate breakdown of the song without it being overbearing
  2:38pm Dungaroos Kipawah:

@nickybones: those are the best ones, that send you back to the music. Behind the Shades is pretty fun, but Heylin's general tone in his writings really grates on me--only HE knows the real deal and there's no other way to hear things. An imperious tone--my opinion, but Behind the Shades has so much goofy stuff like Dylan using Sambucca as hair gel, etc. that makes it fascinating.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:38pm mariano:

Fun Time Objects is a TomDash-related band.
  2:39pm Dungaroos Kipawah:

Yes to BULLY!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:39pm WoodsOfNH (now Maine):

More generally, I do dislike music writing that focuses on lyrics. I've read many reviews where I get to the end and think, "Yes, but was does the record _sound_ like?" That's one of the main reasons I started music writing years ago (I don't do it anymore)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:39pm nickybones:

@DK yep, it's almost the same problem as Shakey. The author's opinions/insights are just unnecessary. He really seeks to take Bob down in some parts of that book.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:40pm nickybones:

@tim from champaign there's a great oral history of grunge/Seattle scene called Everybody Loves Our Town. highly recommended if you dig that stuff!
