Musical theater from off the beaten path. Obscure and unusual show tunes from within the canon and without, flops, failures, and the newest works from up-and-coming artists—plus tried-and-true hits. Also, occasional appearances from songs that are not show tunes (but only if they go really well with show tunes).

Hello! There sure are a lot of things from Sweet Charity that are more famous than Sweet Charity
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:05pm
Webhamster Henry:

Just a set or two of Disco covers would be ... very WFMU.
Avatar 7:06pm
Bronwyn Bishop:

Hey diciassette!! Lol that's a great way to put it. When I was in high school for our senior vocal performance some girls were very excited to do Big Spender, but I'm sure would have had little interest in sitting through a performance of Sweet Charity
Avatar 7:07pm
Bronwyn Bishop:

@Henry: There are so many amazing disco show tunes covers!!!! Disco is better at doing show tunes than show tunes is at doing disco, though (see Got Tu Go Disco and Sister Act)

I would like to report that there are no streaming bugs on this end. You know how networks can be, though..

No streaming bugs here either.

I have neither seen nor heard any bugs on the stream. What are you hearing, Mark R?

there is a bug in my apartment sadly

I am here, although very quiet. And I hear no bugs, except for those added by the drum machine.

Colors of the Wind is so beautiful and sooooo earnest, it's Menken at his Menkenest and Schwartz at his Schwartziest

Schwartziest. I just needed to say it out loud.

But I love this show.

Now this is my fave version of this song.

@Gregory: This show loves you too!!!

@WR: It's the best version!!! Only Sparks could take such a corny song and make it cool

Avatar 7:41pm
Bronwyn Bishop:

@Gregory: do you mean did I know about them or did I own them? I don't own any of the songs I play (I pull them all off youtube) but I knew about some of these and found others mostly by thinking of famous show tunes and looking for covers, but also looking at the broadway message boards for threads of people discussing (mostly complaining about) show tunes covers
Avatar 🎭 7:45pm
Listener Gregory:

Interesting! Complaints are a valuable source of information.
Avatar 7:46pm
Bronwyn Bishop:

Yep everyone on the Broadway message boards complains about the disco covers...their complaints are a great source of disco covers!!!!
Avatar 🎭 Swag For Life Member 7:48pm
WR:

Flo & Eddie, such great entertainers and singers. I prize the couple of Turtles LPs that I bought on vinyl in the 60s.
Avatar 7:49pm
Bronwyn Bishop:

My favorite Turtles fact is that they wrote Elenore because they were annoyed at being asked to write a catchy pop hit, so they wrote a parody of catchy pop hits (thus lines like "you're my pride and joy, et cetera")
Avatar 🎭 7:52pm
Listener Gregory:

This Eels cover is closely modeled after the Ray Charles arrangement, down to the horn licks and solos. They were smart, because it’s a great arrangement. IMHO
Avatar 7:53pm
Bronwyn Bishop:

I have been reading old theatre reviews and my absolute favorite line so far is this one from Brooks Atkinson from 1947: "The reddest things in America are not the activities of the Communist Party but the cash books of about half the musical shows produced this season."
Avatar 7:53pm
Bronwyn Bishop:

@Gregory: thank you for pointing that out, I had never heard the Ray Charles version!
Avatar 🎭 7:54pm
Listener Gregory:

1977 album True To Life, with a big band.
Avatar 🎭 Swag For Life Member 7:59pm
WR:

The LP Eleonora is on is called Battle of the Bands, and every song is a send up of a different pop rock style. Heard in context it is just another silly fun song, and yet it became a top 10 hit.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:00pm
Doug Schulkind:

Ooh ooh ooh! Loving this one (even more than I was loving all the other ones I was loving).
Avatar 🎭 Swag For Life Member 8:01pm

And yes, Ray Charles version of Oh What a Beautiful Morning is outstanding.

Avatar 🎭 8:09pm
Listener Gregory:

For me, the most unexpected cover of a show tune is John Coltrane's Chim Chim Cheree, which he did shortly after it appeared in Mary Poppins (the original film). I don't run back to hear it that often.
@doctorjazz, you must know that song.
Avatar 8:10pm
Bronwyn Bishop:

that sounds amazing!!!
Avatar 🎭 8:11pm
Listener Gregory:

I am not necessarily recommending it... just remarking on its unexpectedness from someone who had just produced A Love Supreme.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:14pm
Webhamster Henry:

8-bit Wizard!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:14pm
doctorjazz:

Sure, that and My Favorite Things are terrific, as is If I Were A Bell by Miles Davis.
  8:17pm
otto:

holy crush
Avatar 🎭 Swag For Life Member 8:18pm
WR:

Point of interest LG is that Chim Chim Cheree is the lead selection on the Coltrane album after A Love Supreme, the lp has another show tune, Feeling Good, and a standard, Nature Boy.
Avatar 🎭 8:21pm
Listener Gregory:

Yes, @WR, he treats Chim Chim Cheree pretty much like My Favorite Things, if I remember, but the result isn't as successful, I don't think. I think there was some kind of marketing thinking of "People love Coltrane doing musical tunes from children's movies. What else can he do?"
Avatar 🎭 8:26pm
Listener Gregory:

I remember hearing Louis singing this, probably when I was a kid in the 60s... on Ed Sullivan?? Or maybe just the radio.
  8:27pm
Marie:

Just tuned in. Loving it!
Avatar 8:29pm
Bronwyn Bishop:

Hi Marie, glad you are enjoying the show :D

I actually blocked on who was singing Impossible Dream until Elvis said, "thank you very much" sounding like an Elvis impersonator. LOL.

Thought I'd chime in as I've been listening. I've had a shittier week then normal. Had to squeeze blood out of a stone to pay for my doctor's visit (no insurance). And trying to get uninsurance in FL is a Rube Goldberg of Murphy's Law (a metaphor for my life, actually). Going to take an edible, have a beer, and watch Borat.

(acutally have that, and most Nilsson albums. Thanks, Bronwyn!).

Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:42pm

This Chad and Jeremy is sooooo good!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:43pm
doctorjazz:

Saw Mandy Patankin once, didn't love the show (a cabaret type show), but he sounded fine on that recording.
Avatar 🎭 Swag For Life Member 8:43pm
WR:

I didn't notice it being Bob Dylan, but I'm cooking and not playing close attention.
Avatar 🎭 Swag For Life Member 8:45pm
WR:

Yes, I came over to the phone to look and see who was singing If I Loved You, very nice Chad & Jeremy.
Avatar 8:45pm
Bronwyn Bishop:

@ngh: they did Somewhere That's Green on family guy??? What did they do to it?? The original is from Little Shop Horrors, here's the movie version, so silly and yet so beautiful: www.youtube.com...
  8:45pm
Marie:

No insult intended toward Mandy, but I've always found his name to be funny
Avatar 🎭 8:45pm

I'm going out on a limb and saying it's Phil Woods on alto sax (the Quincy Jones number).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:45pm
Webhamster Henry:

Of all the Quincy Joneses in the world, Quincy Jones, you're the Quincy Jonesiest.
Avatar 8:47pm
Bronwyn Bishop:

idk what happened with the Dylan, on spotify it was Dylan and so I sent that YouTube link, which claimed to be the same recording, to my mom who puts the show together without listening to make sure it was Dylan because I didn't think anyone would try to bamboozle me...
Avatar 8:48pm
northguineahills:

wait, I've seen the movie version (I was 18, so..... memory might had been severely compromised).

On Family Guy, it's true to the original (sonically and lyrically), but as per usual, a surreal creapy vibe w/ the animation....
  8:48pm
Marie:

Love the love
Avatar 🎭 8:49pm
Listener Gregory:

OK, I think I have the answer. This version IS on YouTube, but I think it's an out-take or first try at an arrangement. The version on the album is very different, and the vocal is more "normal" (normal for Bob, that is).
  8:53pm
Marie:

This is really neat.

And this is so beautiful
