Buskers and talkers
Big bands and squawkers,

The reissues here are from 1960, and team Nat with some of the most stimulating musicians of the time, in various settings. My favorite of the two sessions is That's Right!—presented here as sides 3 and 4 of the two-record set. The subtitle on the original LP was "Nat Adderley and the Big Sax Section," and it features tenor players Jimmy Heath (who also wrote most of the arrangements), Charlie Rouse, and Yusef Lateef, along with Cannonball on alto and Tate Houston on baritone. Nat's is the only brass instrument, and the lush, tightly arranged saxes seem to inspire him and he solos well throughout. All of the reed players are also strong soloists, and they are all provided with at least one opportunity to blow. Wynton Kelly is on piano, and his presence is an important factor. Sometimes the arrangements sound dated, as could be expected from an LP recorded 19 years ago—but most often they come off well, highlights being "You Leave Me Breathless" and "The Old Country."

When Jimmy came out of jail (and stayed clean for the rest of his 93 years), he was made house arranger at Riverside Records by Orrin Keepnews (Peter will leap in to contradict, if necessary, i hope)
