Yeah, the Ramones formed in '74, first album came out in Feb. '76, and that was around the time the term "punk" started taking its current meaning. But there had been rumblings on both sides of the pond for quite some time. Kids were fed up with the status quo.

@Ultradamno - Burnette indeed sounds punk. That early date echoes what many punk rockers thought - they weren't counter or alt rock, they were returning it to an earlier form.

Yep, ultradamno. Everyone including Grundy was really drunk apparently, and Steve Jones got ticked at him when he made a comment to Siouxsie about meeting her backstage later, called him a "dirty old fucker" or something like that. One of the best things to happen on TV. The most awkward detail is perhaps that Siouxsie was wearing a swastika armband.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:18am
mariano:

Yeah, I think in the early days of UK punk the swastika was meant to shock and wasn't a pro-Nazi thing. I think part of it is that WWII means different things to different countries. For the US it's much more about the Holocaust than in the UK. In the UK it's much more about how they held out alone against Germany till the US joined the war. I think for the UK punks at the time, the swastika was more a symbol of affront to British society in general.

Oh shit, did I get that detail wrong about Siouxsie? I'm both really sorry and really relieved. Stupid memory.

@ mariano - I think you're probably right some UK peeps made use of the swastika in kind of a tongue-in-cheek way. Scary thing about this guy at the Misfits concert was that he was under 30, definitely well past that ironic usage.

Well, I think a lot the same thing was the case with the US punk as well, I don't think The Stooges, Ramones, Dictators or Blondie were nazis or white supremacists, it was just a deliberately offensive, juvenile gesture

Did all those groups use swastikas? Never thought about it, but I guess I can see it. I remember a while back seeing a shot of the MC5 on stage back in the day, a Confederate flag as the backdrop. Obviously they weren't white supremacists, I think back then lots of people saw it more as a general symbol of rebellion.

Ilsa was probably another active influence along with Night Porter, there something going on in the mid to late seventies across the board with swastika fetishism.

I don't if they all wore swastikas for sure, Asheton certainly had a full stormtrooper uniform and there's a lot of referencing in Ramones lyrics (Dee Dee grew up in Berlin, which has something to do with it), Blondie are named after Hitler's dog and definitely did some dress up, Dictators had Master Race Rock and stuff like that. Meanwhile, The New York Dolls went Soviet, which was the other end of the same impulse.

True, ultradamno. They don't fit neatly into the goth category. Still pretty dark though. But they have elements of funk and disco in the rhythm of some songs: 16th notes on the high hats, bass playing runs of octaves, etc.
