Greetings everyone! Today's show - Singles Going Nowhere: 3 hours of cancelled or withdrawn singles. Record company meddling, lawsuits, artist tantrums and other assorted controversies have left a trail of "what ifs" throughout rock & roll history. We'll hear the best (or is it worst?) of them.

Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 12:35pm Hughie Considine:

Loving this show, @Joe. I figured many of these singles would be super obscure, but most of them are super familiar (and faves).
Interesting thought, @Pantz. On a related note, I wonder if any singles were held back due to 9/11 -- obviously many songs were removed from playlists.
Avatar 12:35pm Joe B:

@hopey - agreed
Avatar 12:35pm Joe B:

thanks nardo - will do!

Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:39pm Phillippe Bastille:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:39pm Hopey Sockmonkey:

I remember this 2000 flushes thing. Haha.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:41pm Gaylord Fields:

@patrick321: That wasn't actually EMI's doing — in the UK the Beatles had a strict release schedule (approx. one sigle every three months). What happened in the US was purely a cash grab by the three labels (VJ/Tollie, Swan, Capitol) who had the rights to Beatles product released during the entirety of 1963 all being re-released in early 1964.
  12:42pm Tim from LH:

Now I’ve got to dig out my two copies of Combat Rock.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:42pm mariano:

Thanks Gaylord — as I writing my comment I was thinking to myself that you would correct my probable misunderstanding of that phenomenon! . ;)

Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:51pm mariano:

'Sup, David - and there's Handy!

I remember when "American Gigolo" came out, I was around 11. The grownups seemed to go completely apeshit over it and men started trying to emulate Richard Gere's look. At least it yielded a great Blondie song.

  12:52pm prudy:

Live at Leeds one of best live recordings
Avatar 12:52pm Roberto:

I recall radio edits being less common in the '70s and '80s. I think "Who Are You" was often aired in its entirety.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:52pm efd:

A prime example of the genius of Vic Maile. (Not to distract from the topic at hand!)
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 12:52pm Frank In Queens:

This set speaks to me.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:53pm David (in London):

Good general Giorgio Moroder soundtrack for American Gigolo, too.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:54pm efd:

by the late '70s some curses showed up on album rock stations (Steve Miller's "Jet Airliner" is one example) but they were still edited out on most top 40 and other singles-based stations.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:54pm David (in London):

I tried out for an English Gigolo, but there wasn't much call for that sort of thing in late 70s rural Oxfordshire villages.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:54pm Gaylord Fields:

@Roberto: This is 1970, and a proposed single — no f-word would ever be released, and it could possibly lose about a minute of its time.
Avatar 12:55pm Joe B:

the young man's blues 45 is 4:45. not sure what was supposed to be the a side
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 12:56pm tim from champaign (now washington):

i'm sure i'll need some correcting when reading back this set!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:01pm myron feld:

This much faster version of "Tell The Truth" tops the slower one. This has got to be the fastest tempo song Clapton ever recorded.
  1:01pm PJ:

I watched American Gigolo in the past year, and I have to agree with some of the other comments - it's really dull. Doesn't help that Gere acts like he's brain dead throughout the movie.
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 1:01pm Hughie Considine:

Clapton seems to be one of the most retrospectively reviled huge musical act from the classical rock era, due to his racist remarks. Steely Dan also seems to get a lot of hate, but only for their fussy production.
  1:03pm P-90:

Well that was a hell of a segue
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:03pm WoodsOfNH (now Maine):

I saw Clapton on the Backless tour. Opening act was Muddy Waters. Muddy smoked him.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:03pm Mike Sin:

re: "Tell the Truth" -- For the BeatlesGeeks out there -- this version was recorded during the sessions for Harrison's "All Things Must Pass." That LP and sessions were really the impetus for the formation of Derek and the Dominoes.

  1:10pm PJ:

@Hughie: I wasn't around then, but it seems like Clapton got a lot of praise in the 60's (and I like almost all of his Yardbirds/Cream/Derek & the D's stuff), but since then, everything he's put out is pretty uninspired. I imagine that has brought down his rep as much as his racism.
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 1:13pm Hughie Considine:

I think you're right, @PJ -- the bland music is certainly a major component. What a comedown though. I mean, kids used to scrawl "Clapton is God" when he was at his height.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:14pm Threemoons:

Well, shit, my temp gig came to a sudden end...BUT...we still have to dial back in tomorrow AM just to wrap things up so no sleeping in. Meh. I wish weed was legal in New York right about now. If NJ gets it, the PATH train is gonna stand for "Pass After Taking Hit." I swear I can't stand this crap anymore. Between losing what was supposed to be a "real" job back in July (it was shitshow, no tears), my "Plan C" temping drying up, and pain in my left knee/leg from a fall in the kitchen, I am just so over it. I want to make an entire pitcher of Swimming Pool cocktails, toke up, and play Borderlands 3 until after the election.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:14pm David (in London):

Clapton's soundtrack to 'Edge of Darkness' is also excellent. That said, it too was a long time ago now.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:15pm Threemoons:

@Joe B thank you....I know that this hasn't been a party for EVERYONE, but I felt the need to vent...
  1:17pm PJ:

I remember hearing "Leave My Kitten" on commercial FM radio sometime in the 80's.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:17pm Gaylord Fields:

The real question is why "Leave My Kitten Alone" was left in the vault in the first place! It's miles above all the other cover versions on Beatles for Sale!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:18pm Woo:

Absolutely! @Gaylord Fields
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:18pm Threemoons:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:19pm Mike Sin:

re: "Leave My Kitten Alone"
For those in the NYC-area at the time -- Jimmy Fink and Scott Muni were playing this track quite a lot (for tightly programmed FM stations at the time) trying to get a jump/scoop on what that they thought was going a major Beatles' release at the time.

Tin Machine gets a bad rap, IMHO. I really like the first album.

Bobby Keys' work had an edge to it. I don't think it ever sounded so smooth and cloying.

@PJ: It was released (briefly) on the final Badfinger Mk 1 album Wish You Were Here (which was recalled several weeks after its release).
  1:43pm Frank Zaatar:

It came out in the 80's; the most recent single in it was from Scary Monsters. It MAY even be signed, in which case it's probably worth something. I have to remind myself to look for it the next time I'm over there!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:52pm David (in London):

I think The Stooges' 'Funhouse' constitutes the correct use of sax.

Roxy, of course. I know there are others, of course. It's just a bad sax solo seems to spoil good songs. It happened a lot on 70's singer/songwriter albums and it was usually Tom Scott, David Sanborne or a Brecker Brother.
