a Hawaiian group singing a Spanish-language song in German? Must be Aloha Fridays!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:03pm
WR:

MB, l am on my phone for WFMU comment / chat 98% of the time. And I am extremely slow, proof reading, editing multiple times, sometimes discarding the comment because the moment is past. In my case probably for the best or I would be contributing even more irrelevant chatter than I do.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:05pm
Jan Turkenburg:

Indeed mr Fab. Aloha! However most artists are from Indonesia, also the Hawaiian sounding ones, like Rudy Waitara. The Kilima Hawaiians were Dutch but played a mixture of Indonesian Krontjong and other exotica.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:08pm

aloha Jan and all

These Balanese gamelans are a lot busier than the Sundanese ones.

Jan Turkenburg:

Hi Coel and Webhamster!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:10pm
Webhamster Henry:

Since Jan is hosting today, I'll just mention that I once had to run out of multi-course rijsttafel in A'dam to catch a train back to Oslo.
Avatar 12:11pm
Mr Fab:

This gamelan is ON! The CalArts student gamelan orch are good, and you get to see what all those fantastic instruments look like.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:11pm
Jan Turkenburg:

Ah, what a pity, WH!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:14pm
Webhamster Henry:

There was a very good live gamelan/dance performance streaming a few weeks ago from the Gamelan Cudamani School of Performing Arts.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:14pm
Jan Turkenburg:

I had the privilage of attending several workshops of both Balanese and Javanese Gamalan, the Balanese from a Indonesian Master visiting The NL in the 90s.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:16pm
Jan Turkenburg:

I still have recordings of the concert we gave at the end of that week, but I'm saving that for later
Avatar 12:17pm
Mr Fab:

So Jan, you got to actually play on gamelan instruments?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:17pm
Webhamster Henry:

Our gamelan has been on hiatus since March, like everything else. Here are some shots of us from 2018, taken by former WFMU DJ Stefan.
www.centuryhouse.org...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:18pm
Jan Turkenburg:

Yes i Did Mr Fab, on several. It's an experience you never forget.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:20pm
Jan Turkenburg:

Wow, Henry! I think if there was one in this area I would join.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:22pm
Webhamster Henry:

My genre of music is "anything that sounds good in a former cement mine".
Avatar 12:23pm
Mr Fab:

That is fantastic, Jan.

Henry, that looks great, but had to chuckle at Catskills?! Guess i still think of culture in that region as Borscht Belt comedians playing to older Jewish folk. Does the gamelan play “Hava Nigela?”
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:35pm
Webhamster Henry:

That's more like the Sullivan County side of the Catskills.
Our only "cover" was "Where have all the Flowers Gone", adapted for Pelog. I actually played the lead, on panarus (saron).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:43pm
WR:

Indonesians in Netherlands singing German translation of mishmash of Japanese rockabilly song. Loved it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:44pm
Jan Turkenburg:

Yes, you gotta love The Blue Diamonds :-) :-)
Avatar 12:46pm
Mr Fab:

Isnt that great, WR? And the lyrics to "Sukiyaki' are ridiculous anyway - taking a Japanese instrumental and naming it after a food, it's like taking an American instrumental and naming it "Ham Sandwich."
Avatar 12:54pm
ARB:

Too bad I don't have any durian to eat while listening! Aloha amigos!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:54pm
WR:

Mr Fab, it was not an instrumental, Japanese words in the original. Read the Wikipedia page.

en.wikipedia.org...

Written to express sorrow at Japan left failing to get Japan out of USA treaty in 1960. Rewritten before being recorded to make it more generic lamenting love loss.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:54pm
Jan Turkenburg:

Aloha Alina!

ARB! Just in time for the Monkey Chant. Always great. Buying a used copy of "Music From The Morning of the World" was a real ear-opener. For many, I'm sure, not just me.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:02pm

Hi all. Jus' Kecak'in it here.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:04pm
Jan Turkenburg:

Hi Otis!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:05pm
Jan Turkenburg:

I don't consider it as 'fake', WH, but maybe it's semantics.. Isn't it just a development into something else?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:06pm

Having said that, I don;t think Esquivel is genuinely Indonesian ...

Avatar 1:10pm

There was a German artist who took credit for sort of developing the Kecak, but Indonesians reject that, saying they were moving the ceremony towards its current direction long before he arrived.

That was so fantastic. Where could I find that Alunan Rumpun Bambu Parahiyangan track? My attempt to search for it confused Mr Google.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:33pm
