Favoriting September 25, 2020: Incredibly Strange Music Vol. 2 - Chapter 1: Jello Biafra pt. 15 - Pseudo-Psychedelic & Psychedelic Pt. II
Today's show is gonna be complicated as I continue to pour through budget psyche and try to untangle the confusing webs created by these labels to make themselves more cheap cash through deception with re-packaging and re-purposing music, especially that of The Projection Company and The Animated Egg, etc. Although most of this episode is based on the Jello Biafra section on Pseudo-Psyche, I’m also including bonus tracks inspired by the research of DJ Georgy Girl from her article “Astro-Sounds From Beyond the Year 2000.” I had never heard about The ID material until I read her article found here: https://lorihajitura.com/2017/03/08/astro-sounds-from-beyond-the-year-2000/?fbclid=IwAR1U_6IzVW2FQkhl9U7ZVTEVBAnDTnhKvQ4SbWHTue4MRuNIsBkQvkmTi-g There is much debate about how The ID was formed and who was truly behind the music and where the session tracks originated that were later used for The Animated Egg LP and later on 101-Strings - Astro-Sounds From Beyond the Year 2000.” ID and Animated Egg Bassist Glenn Cass attempted to write the “True Story of The ID” in a review on Amazon.com. At the end of his explanation he claims: “The Id was not Jerry Cole's band and the album was not Jerry's idea. We were five friends who came together to do this project. Concerning all the other record labels that released out-takes of the Id. There were no out-takes. Arnold was so cheap we did not cut anything extra. The extra album on World in Sound is not the Id out-takes. It's a bunch of s*** from some other session we did and Jerrys the one who gave it to world in sound without us knowing about it. The other albums out there are from other sessions we did and we did a bunch. Jerry evidently got his hands on some of our old sessions masters and reworked them such as the animated Egg which I found myself playing bass on.” This full article by Glenn Cass can be found on an Amazon review thread here: https://www.amazon.com/Inner-Sounds-Id/dp/B001CESP9Q/ In another statement, below the Cass article on the same Amazon page, written by a relative of Arnold Sukonick aka Paul Arnold, he/she claims “It was Arnold that conceived and put this all together and hired these sessions musicians.” Whatever the truth is, I’m just a messenger posting info from various sources. This subject itself is a complicated web. You can draw your own conclusions about it all. I’m just playing audio examples representing some of these things and I know I'm only scratching the surface. -Your DJ

Artist Track Album Format Comments Images Approx. start time
(Bonus Intro Track) Little Joe Curtis  Mini-Skirt   Favoriting The Young Sound of ’68  LP  Better version of this track as promised, turns out it was a balance problem, the vocals are more quiet in the right speaker. Another version found on The Young Sound of Today LP and also on the Somerset/ Stereo Fidelity LP “Here Comes Some Soul From Otis Redding And Little Joe Curtis”, as brought up on a previous budget label episode.

The Projection Company  What Else   Favoriting Give Me Some Lovin'    One of the recognizable session recordings by The Production Company, you’re about to hear the complete progression to Astro Sounds. - Your DJ The band description of “PC” found on Discogs: “The Projection Company was a fictional group name tacked onto recordings by a real group headed by Jerry Cole who was working on demo tracks or his RCA album The Id, among other works. An associate of Cole sold the demo tapes to an unknown source and many of the songs and other concepts by Jerry show up on many releases on so called Budget labels, under different names such as the The Stone Canyon Rock Group, The Animated Egg and Call It Soul! by The Haircuts and The Impossibles to name a few.”)

Favoriting
0:40:35 (Pop-up)
The Haircuts and the Impossibles  Cherry Pie   Favoriting Call It Soul  LP  A lame out of place white bread doo-wop number in the middle of it all. Favoriting
0:45:08 (Pop-up)
The Haircuts and the Impossibles (actual artist on this track: The Animated Egg)  Down Down and Gone   Favoriting Call it Soul  LP  Call it Soul by Haircuts and The Impossibles has some strong tracks, too. But after a while I noticed that the strong tracks sounded familiar, and discovered that the label had recycled (retitled and repackaged) the same instrumental tracks over and over! Some are “Astro Sounds” tracks minus the 101 Strings. - Jello Biafra ISM II, pg. 23.

The Id  Don't Think Twice   Favoriting     So after doing the research for this show, I'm convinced that the Astro/Egg tracks are NOT outtakes by The ID. As they didn't have any outtakes, but the same people were involved in the sessions.
Favoriting
0:53:11 (Pop-up)
(Bonus Track) The Stone Canyon Rock Group  Don't Think Twice   Favoriting Mac Arthur Park    An example of an Id track being repackaged elsewhere. - BC “Tapes / Cuts stolen by an associate of Jerry Cole (spacemen, wrecking crew) - all connected / spawned out of the Album "THE INNER SOUND OF THE ID" on RCA records, alot of these recorded after the ID was released, where Jerry Cole and his band were exploring Country rock mixed into the psychedelia, more funky acid than the angular ID album. Some songs and alternate takes only found on this album. Jerry sings on many tracks here. Like other Cole repackages, such as "t-swift and electric bag" don't expect the best sound quality - these were intended as demos. Recommended for anyone that likes early acid rock.” - info by StrangelySatisfying March 23, 2019 on Discogs
