Actually, there were computers in sight way back then. First, there was the mid-'70s debate about the relative merits of calculators introduced for mass consumption by Texas Instruments and HP (with its reverse Polish notation). On top of that, in my math class in '76 the teacher introduced a computer to the class. We learned programming. Storage was variously punch-card and cassette.
