and gaylord and todd - speaking of the weird view of what was old circa 1972 - this set reminds me of the coasters' appearance on Sonny and Cher TV show - with peter noone and a few others - paying tribute to the 'oldies' from a few years before. maybe frankie valli and neil sedaka were the other 'oldies' on there

Yeah, 1972 was when Richard Nader started his oldies tour, with groups playing songs that were — gasp! — 10 years old! And now I keep in mind that something like "Hey Ya" by Outkast is 17 years old and someone like Michael Shelley's daughter Juniper wasn't even born when that record came out!

A view from the cheap seats — When rock music was part of the zeitgeist and moving at lightning speed focused on the future, five years felt like an era. It just isn’t there anymore as far as “part of identities” and all that. To a lot of young folks, subcultures based on popular music and all that seems quite quaint at this point.

@Mike: I see your point. Some young kids are open to no fixed genre and seem to enjoy the most varied mix of songs, styles, eras. I've been watching those "reaction vides" where teenagers hear, say, Phil Collins or Dolly Parton or Frank Sinatra for the first time. And even though they almost always tend to like the songs because that makes for better drama, the best ones have pretty cogent insights as to why some song from 30 years before they were born is worthy of praise.

@Gaylord et. al.: Another weird thing is how many advertisements feature music (and usually good music) from the sixties (also the fifties and seventies, but esp. the sixties). That shows how it strikes a responsive chord with people because the products aren't aimed at people who were around when the songs were.

Looking at the charts is always interesting — groups/artists move 15,000 units and they’ve got a number 1 album. The audience just isn’t there. Look at popular music from 1950 to 1970 — the progressions is unimaginable now. From 2000 to 2020, that creativity, dedication, and lighting-fast progression existed more in other areas, such as gaming...

I'm inclined to believe that it's kind of a generational thing along with technology... when the music started becoming socially relevant that's when people started paying attention during the Depression with Woody Guthrie Pete Seeger and then the country and western Hank Williams Bob Wills type thing and then Jazz and Blues people started paying attention... some music became Timeless because of its appeal and who Associated themselves with a particular appeal... radio and how much free time people had to listen to it made all the difference... in the mid-70s 60 stuff was considered oldies so I agree with Gaylord and I also agree with Mike...time flys!!!...:)
