T.N. Rajaratnam Pillai is generally considered the greatest of all the nadaswaram players. This tune, Todi (or sometimes "Thodi") is a number every nadaswaram player has in their repertoire. It is a kind of rite of passage playing this number.

Downbeat magazine had an article on musicians born 100 years ago: Charlie Parker, Dave Brubeck, Art Blakely, and... Yusef Lateef! (among others) It seems to me that Lateef must be a generation younger than those guys, but he played well into his old age, I guess.

Fun Fact: I actually have a mini-fridge in my studio. My wife and daughter gave it to me for my birthday. I fill it with my beloved seltzer and it saves me the trouble of racing downstairs to the kitchen.
