Doug Schulkind:

Those flashing Bump Your Ass Off signs were from a real place. The El Dorado bumper car concession at Coney Island, Brooklyn. Inside the place blasted disco music at a so-loud-it-hurts volume (hurts so good), and outside on a loud-speaker system, a funky tape-loop played over and over and over a voice intoning, BUMP, BUMP, BUMP, YER ASS OFF! BUMP YER ASS OFF!!!"

The music I used to talk over at the beginning of the show is an homage to that scene.

I'm always fascinated by the effects of the colonial experience in Africa, but all over the world as well, as it pertains to music. Many of these artists are native French speakers (you get some Asian input in Dutch rock and pop coming from Surinam and Indonesia).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:56pm
Funky16Corners:

Not that Surinam is in Asia, but colonial Dutch outpost
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:59pm

Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:52pm
Doug Schulkind:

I grab everything within reach.
  5:52pm

I prefer the 12" medium, because the larger groove area enables the needle to capture more information, leading to that thumpin' bass sound we all crave so dearly.

When I sit on my deck reading the paper, squirrels come on it as if I’m not even there! I never feed them. Can’t understand their impudence.

My daughter gave me cut before dashing off to college. She did a fine job. Better than the ones I pay for from my rightwing barber who has Fox Snooze on all the damn time.
