( the ultimate unnecessary graffito: "incognito" )
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:08pm
David Dichelle:

Yes, it is an old Obstweinschänke - fruit wine pub. Happened to pass it in the middle of nowhere recently. No fruit or any other wine to be had, alas.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:09pm
David Dichelle:

It apparently burnt down a few years ago.

"fruit wine"? Is that mind shattering fruit liquor or something milder?

fruit wine is found in the northern regions of the US. I don't usually drink it, as it's too sweet for my pallette.

enjoying this set! hi, David and folx!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:34pm
David Dichelle:

Hello Granny, glad you are enjoying it!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:35pm
fred:

@ngh: I tend to dislike Barney's vision, but I'm amazed at his having such a strong one. So I have a conflicted view of his work. Drawing Restraint 9 was a great experience though, I saw it in a theater and people would leave and boo. Most were there for Bjork, and that expectation was part of the deal. On its own, not a good film, it really needs all that came before
Avatar 3:37pm
northguineahills:

@fred: his films are fun, imho, but he has a bit ego for my tastes.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:50pm
David Dichelle:

Hello Cmurtha! How are the Ottoman explorations?
Avatar 3:55pm
northguineahills:

@fred: an anglophile like you should know my proclivity for understaement (I guess don't subscribe to 'murican stereotypes [not an understatement] ;)
Avatar 3:55pm
northguineahills:

....and my proclivity for misspellings (very amererican)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:55pm
Cmurtha:

Good! My advisor is giving me some "tough love" vis-a-vis footnotes, since I often have a hard time seeing certain errors, but she's going to put more of that on me. Things go well though, every chapter has been drafted, just revisions left. The dis should be done by winter, and I should be Dr.Murtha come summer. The more pressing concern is going to be teaching this tuesday which I am doing in person...I suspect the school is going to shut down again AFTER the kids can't get a refund for the semester.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:56pm
fred:

@ngh: Sure about that understatement thing, but then again, you're a Florida Man...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:57pm
Cmurtha:

How are things in Alemania? Is radio Blau open again, or not yet?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:58pm
David Dichelle:

Cmurtha: I am very familiar with the joys of footnotes myself, so I can only wish you great fortitude. The teaching situation sounds like it could be difficult, though.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:59pm
fred:

@Cmurtha: will it be available online?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:00pm
David Dichelle:

And thanks for asking, Radio Blau has been open for a while now but I have settled into the happy routine of broadcasting from home on the Drummer Stream (probably couldn't do this fill-in in fact otherwise).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:01pm
Cmurtha:

Classes? Or the dissertation? Class - I am ready to move to teaching online since that is a needed thing. They won't totally stop the semester, just stop in person classes.
The disseration itself will probably on pro-quest around the time that it (hopefully) becomes a book a few years after I finish it.
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 4:01pm
Michael 98145:

@Cmurtha, Dr of what, if i may ask?
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 4:02pm

Yes, it is from 70s Iran - great voice, I find.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:04pm

@Cmurtha: I was asking about the dissertation. I usually like these more than papers, the state of the art section is only useful for bystanders like me
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 4:05pm
Michael 98145:

@Cmurtha, wow. All the best to you..!
Avatar 4:06pm
northguineahills:

My now (ex)-wife just found my research and drafts of my MA thesis, and will mail it to me once I get a fixed address. So, I have that going for me...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:06pm
Cmurtha:

@Fred, parts will probably appear as articles sooner, but yeah the whole thing itself won't be online till its an e-book, or untill pro-quest is allowed to put the document up, which I think is something like five years after I finish it? That's copy-right and database based things that I have little say in.
Avatar 4:09pm
northguineahills:

@Cmurtha: Super good luck. I didn't have a good experience w/ academia. My original thesis advisor got a really good job at a prominent university, and my next one was too wound up w/ his ego and research to pay attention to any students.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:09pm
David Dichelle:

Yes, good luck, navigating the academic world sure ain't easy nowadays.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:12pm
Cmurtha:

@north that's really unfortunate. I have had the good fortune of only having good advisors thus far, but, I have heard many horror stories.

And thank everyone for the well wishes, we will see how things go. I don't expect this to be a stand out year for jobs or anything given covid, but I am somewhat optimistic long term.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:13pm
fred:

@Cmurtha: tough call, many academics don't get to choose how their work is available or not. And don't get a dime either way. EU rules make stuff more available, but without compensation. Still beats having to pay to be published, I guess
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 4:14pm
Michael 98145:

It is so weird with all education gone online
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:24pm
doctorjazz:

Still don't know how much will be on line, definitely see kids heading to their college dorms. Hybrid programs seem to be most common, half in person, half in line. My daughter's starting her 1st year teaching, (biology/secondary Ed), was scheduled for all in person teaching, but just this past week it was changed to half-half (Northern New Jersey).

They've been having some ferocious heat the past couple weeks in S.F. believe it or not, Chresti. David, I LOVE this Paul Bley, released in '71 but if you told me this was a brand new album recorded last month, I'd believe it. Is Paul Motian the drummer by any chance?
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 4:50pm
chresti:

Mark R, I saw that, and the smoke, hope that's blown away.
  4:51pm
Mark R:

Nvm, I just looked it up, it's Barry Alschtul (sp?), an equally fine percussionist. If memory serves, he was the original drummer in Weather Report. And in my looking up, I discovered that, although this album was released in '71, it was actually recorded in '67, making it even further ahead of its time. I also noticed the great Gary Peacock is on bass.
