Heard Jimmy Smith a number of times, once with Phil Upchurch. I don't recall Upchurch singing. Once, though, Smith had recently returned from a tour in the UK before playing at the Hollywood club where I heard him. He was under the weather and in a bad mood. We were seated at a table at center stage, just below Smith. Two drink minimum. When the server delivered my second martini, Smith advised me to slow down with the booze.

I vaguely remember Belinda and Hova doing an odd interview with Jonathan Richman many years ago. He was "the patron saint of Greasy Kids Stuff". So there was much anticipation of the interview. Then he was kind of standoffish throughout the interview.

"Cry for a Shadow" is the ONLY John & George composition. It's an homage to the Shadows, which is maybe why it doesn't sound much like George's later style (I always thought that too).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:21pm
Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Cry the only track credited to Lennon-Harrison - the Guitar players. A send up of The Shadows. They didn't have the guitars or amps they world get famous with yet - maybe John has a Rickenbacher... & in Hamburg they were leather wearing speedfreaks entertaining pimps & such all night long! Also meant though they had to play any kind of anything they could - which would serve them well later...

george's style changed when he got a guitar that was easier to play - the gretsch was a revelation to george.

Harrison sounds like a better and more technical guitarist on Cry For A Shadow than he did on many of the Beatles albums, either he held back for the albums or his playing was better when he was learning licks from Tony Sheridan and playing those marathon gigs in Hamburg

Is possible Harrison was back burnered by George Martin a small bit...When it came to Arranging the most important rekkiids ever (really) ...Harrison would get more resentful of being an 'economy class Beatle' - his words - as they went on & he became a Writer too & so on. He was good getting out & staying out basically...

I read Geoff Emerick's book too, and he was sometimes brutally honest about George's playing, especially when it came to solos. But I do think in Hamburg when all of them were playing non-stop, George may have been a better soloist than we hear on the 63-65 Beatles tracks because they stretched out more than they could on a 2 and a half minute pop song
