A viking ship appears on the horizon, a likeness of Alice Coltrane carved into its bow. Rare birds flock together to sing Francoise Hardy as soul hits. A sunset of blips and bleeps fills the air.

I love those "aaaa, aaaah" bits in that Sessa song:)

I have to admit, without wanting to bring people down, the way things are going down at these protests is starting to remind of Putin's Russia. Especially hearing a story of one person (I think they were non-binary) who were maced, had their comfort dog taken away and then kept in a police cell for 10 hours, to be charged with resisting arrest. That kind of thing is what happens to people who attend protests in Russia. At least the courts are still independent, unlike in Russia, so there's that...

There's some consensus that Drumpf's real prime motivation is to keep executive immunity as POTUS - as there are cases & indictments waiting for him the second he isn't. With the election for his 2nd term - why wouldn't he pull out any & all stops?
With mail ballots crucial in the pandemic - the USPS will be one focus. Stormtrooper secret police answerable only to the Fuhrer will excite his base - & there is concern they will be used to intimate voters. Hell - there is concern he won't go no matter how the vote comes down @ this point!
So I have a favor to ask.
My birthday is 3rd Nov. - election day. I'm asking please to bring a Blue Tsunami
- not only crushing Drumpf - but draining the swamp in Congress - barely less important in the game of power - & in your states & local municipalities. Let's see if we can bring more to the polls.

In a way it's simple. Demographics are changing - & there are fewer angry white affluent males all the time - & more of everybody else. Republicans know they can't win a fair & actually democratic election - so their strategies must be everything else. So we end up with their unwavering dedication to the Drumpf Cult. It is a sign of their weakness the more extreme they become. It's encouraging in a bitter way : see it for what it is.
Billy Bragg has been commenting on new media, youth, & an expectation there will be Accountability. Take heart in this.
But I always say the challenge for the Left is disunity. The Romans loved straight lines & the Celts lived spirals. The irony is that those who really live Freedom have a harder time with Organization & a United front.

From an Australian perspective, you guys really need two things: a) compulsory voting and b)a proportionate voting system

Or whatever you call that second one. Basically, in Australia, when you vote for a minor party and they don't get a seat in Parliament, your vote goes to whoever the party preferences. So I can vote for the Greens, knowing that they probably won't win, but my vote will still end up going to Labor (the main Left party) and won't be wasted. But it still keep Labor on their toes, knowing that people are voting Green and therefore, wanting them to move further left :)

Also reason to fill out the census: Conservatives hate the census and try to suppress the numbers, so they can reduce/re-draw the voting districts in order to disadvantage the already disadvantaged..

Woods! How was your break?
Avatar 10:27am
RabidRabbit:

@Tofu There's definitely a bit of that :)

But I think that you are still less likely to vote for someone extreme. I really doubt someone like Trump could win here. In the US, if 20% of the people love you, given that less than half of the people vote, you have a good chance. In Australia, if 20% of the people love you, most likely 80% hate you. So much harder to win :)

Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

For anyone making a claim to Patriotism & Order - may I humbly suggest the First Amendment to the Constitution of the United Staes of America is the First for a reason.
& that it guarantees not only Free Speech in this great nation ...& which friend is not the same as a right to present insult & vitriol to a host in their own privately owned forum - but also to present grievance to the Government specifically
- & the Right to public assembly & protest.
The Portland Moms are there to protect their children who are there to protect Rights of people of color - including even the Right to breath despite extrajudicial Police murder - & they chant there's no riot here - take off your riot gear. It's a message Sir we might all benefit from considering in our interactions.

@David Yeah, I really like Earth. It's not too bad home, maybe an hour. Train to High and I, Victoria line to Victoria and then a train to East Croydon then drive home. Maybe an hour on a good night with the connections lined up.

@Robert Potenza: no issue with veterans (my dad was decorated WW2, and I had a draft number in Vietnam era, but not called). First amendment gives us the right to free speech, and if this isn't a peaceful venue to share your opinions, what is? I'm not a communist, but it does seem that socialism works very well for American corporations when they line up for handouts during a pandemic, and get huge tax breaks at any time. But for the little guy, to hell with him, right? No healthcare, crumbling safety net...and worse.

I was labeled a Communist! Have no fear... Paul Robeson’s life is illustrative and worthy and calls for our attention... as does the founding document of BLM/Civil Rights the “Letter From The Birmingham Jail” April 1963

Found the recent 49% white-support-for-Trump figure. Late, sorry, but thought I'd post it here for anyone happening to look back: www.nbcnews.com... He's also ahead among all men and way ahead among whites without college degrees.

(Not sure if you'll see this, Trouble, but it seems like the playlist page for next week's show [7/30] won't load -- at least for me, on two machines and in two browsers, it just comes up blank.)
