A live, improvised sound collage experiment, going back 28 years, weaving mesmerizing new soundscapes from found and collected materials right in the present moment.
Pop music, speeches, live phone calls and spontaneous monologues become ambient loopy layered threads riding the liminal spaces between waking and dreaming. [On hiatus.] (Visit homepage.)

Favoriting July 6, 2020: Not a Single Thing, the double-station experiment (Show #724/527) | Download MP3

Dreamy, strange, scary, mysterious, memory-bending, often beautiful collage today, with surprise listener phone calls, all improvised spontaneously into existence. With a little bit of Joe Frank (r.i.p.), sadly joining my other radio idol, Negativland's Don Joyce.

Hear it again now, with added 2020 semi-simulcast confusion:

True story from the machine learning front: a researcher was complaining that his neural network got poor results because of human error (the task was classifying electronic/analog electric/acoustic instruments). His main complaint was that harpsichord was deemed acoustic, when his system said it was electronic, which was obviously true to him

@melinda: "prom" here is just a party thrown by students. I was viewed as a troublemaker, mainly because when my school made up a rule that I could only enter one national academic contest, I chose English over math. Also, I didn't apply for a prep school and chose to go to a public college. You can't outmild my rebellion, but that was too much for other students. Teenagers are conformists

We are being told if this is Tuesday night we can call in now.

i hear rhythmic stipulations squiggles and blurts with a muffled obfuscation

@WR That's funny because that's what's happening in an hour (from an hour ago) too.

Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

My tech schedule has 24 steps and I'm up to #17.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:37pm
WR:

Segment just past was about young folks wanting to crack some game. About a back door.

Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

I had this idea that moving to Mondays was going to simplify something, he says as sweat pours down in waves.

Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

Back door! Jim, you're giving away all our best secrets. Mr. Potato Head! I remember that. What I'm hearing right now, however, I'll hear again in one hour at the same time you are, except some of the "you"'s looking here are listening to the same hour as me already.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:39pm
WR:

Now some laugh loops
Avatar 3:40pm
Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

I guess I will need to replay the one-hour-ago comments in an hour

drums overcoming laughter and the phone!

Powering on yet another computer so I can monitor more simultaneous times at once (3, up from the current 2).

Granny Spicy Tuna (e/em):

laughter is over?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:43pm
Granny Spicy Tuna (e/em):

now they're shooting

Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

This whole thing would have fallen apart if I hadn't had an emulated copy of computer #1 ready on computer #2, because I looked ahead to the step I'd have to do at the second hour involving playing audio through my routing driver, and realized I hadn't installed the routing driver there, and would have to reboot to install, but the radio broadcast from that computer had already begun...so instead I'm doing the audio routing broadcast from the emulator which is pulling from a file share taken from the recording of the first hour's radio stream capture, and sending out to Give the Drummer Radio from there.
Avatar 3:46pm
Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

I got to skip some steps...the radio station sometimes needs me to make an announcement that wouldn't be appropriate to play on WFMU, so I have this other set of things to pad out times and segment playback files just so, which I have to hit the right buttons at the right moments which is tricky because none of this has ever happened before.

Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

You'd perhaps never guess that something so dreamy sounding could be such a focus-juggle on the backend.
Avatar 3:51pm
Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

Now monitoring more times. And it's not exactly dreamy sounding over there, more a chaos dream.

Ken, hope you can enjoy the ride you've provided to us. My lunch break is over, back to meetings and other assorted work games. Thanks for the reminder to tuck my shirt in even though I'm not getting paid enough.
