Musical theater from off the beaten path. Obscure and unusual show tunes from within the canon and without, flops, failures, and the newest works from up-and-coming artists—plus tried-and-true hits. Also, occasional appearances from songs that are not show tunes (but only if they go really well with show tunes).

Hi Bronwyn! I have the scratchy old recording of this somewhere.
Avatar 7:04pm
Bronwyn Bishop:

from 1945?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:05pm
Sweet Corn Lizzie:

My parents had a friend name June who was very pregnant just when this song was popular!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:07pm
Webhamster Henry:

That June is suspiciously like the Merry Month Of May.
Avatar 7:08pm
northguineahills:

meanwhile, in Florida...... *sighs deeply*
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:10pm
Webhamster Henry:

Show tunes used to be a good source of pop tunery!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:11pm
Webhamster Henry:

Ella Fitzgerald's Mac The Knife is known for her forgetting the lyrics and just scatting while apologizing.
Avatar 7:16pm
northguineahills:

Wow, there was even a Satchmo the Great Film. And the music done by Kurt Weil. I feel so ignorant.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:18pm
Sweet Corn Lizzie:

Some Enchanted Evening makes me shiver. The chords, the tune are perfect.
Avatar 7:18pm
Bronwyn Bishop:

@Lizzie: Story that tangentially relates to that: The main character's name is Julie and she gets pregnant as a main part of the plot, and when 15-year-old Stephen Sondheim, quasi-adopted son of the Hammerstein family, went to see the show's premiere, he was amazed by the audacity of Rodgers and Hammerstein having the whole chorus sing "Julie's busting out all over!"
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:19pm
Sweet Corn Lizzie:

Oh that's fantastic! Thanks.
Avatar 🎭 Swag For Life Member 7:20pm

Hi Bronywn and all you guys. Favorite show tunes show AND deejay, that's for sure!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:25pm
Webhamster Henry:

There's a reference to the Music-Pop crossover in the movie "Grace Of My Heart", where the aspiring pop singer heroine auditions with "Hey There" from the Pajama Game before being told no one wants that kind of singer and music anymore. en.wikipedia.org...
Avatar 7:28pm
Bronwyn Bishop:

@ngh: Weill just did the music for Mack the Knife- not the Satchmo film
Avatar 7:28pm

Thought I had this Platters rekkid....

Hi, have been listening, but except for spending 10 minutes trying to figure out how all those things you mentioned are found in Carousel, busy with work tonight. Thanks for the show.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:49pm
Webhamster Henry:

I have Gigi in French - and I think of the English version as a translation!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:49pm
Webhamster Henry:

I should probably do a cover with Ken's Goat Scream all over it.
Avatar 7:54pm
northguineahills:

Gee, I have this Gigi album as well. I think this is the mist albums Bronwyn has played that I have....
Avatar 🎭 Swag For Life Member 7:55pm
diciassette:

I am still a little creeped out by that song (as well as the Kinks' Art Lover)
Avatar 🎭 Swag For Life Member 7:55pm
diciassette:

I love Gigi though!
Avatar 🎭 Swag For Life Member 7:56pm
diciassette:

Not to mention Maurice
Avatar 8:02pm
Bronwyn Bishop:

hey WR!! thanks for listening!!
Avatar 8:02pm
Bronwyn Bishop:

@Henry and diciassette: it is definitely a bit creepy and deserves a goat scream rendition...sadly there are many show tunes that fall into that category
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:04pm
Webhamster Henry:

I have this Cole Porter tune too - there's a good reissue with him singing a bunch of his songs.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:06pm

Cellophane??
Avatar 🎭 Swag For Life Member 8:06pm

Cellophane!
Avatar 8:07pm

I think cellophane probably seemed more exciting back in 1935
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:08pm
Jim the Poet:

Calambert is pretty cool
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:08pm

Paul Frees Channeling Harry Richman.

Paul Frees ALWAYS sounds like Paul Frees.
Avatar 🎭 Swag For Life Member 8:09pm

have you guys heard But in the Morning, No! (still on C. Porter topic) it's my theme song
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:11pm

Cole and Paul Frees, both great!

Pretty sure I've heard But in the Morning, No! on this very show.
Avatar 8:13pm

I made Babs singing "People" into a sample on my Mirage sampler back in the late 80s.

I have that! It's one of the fantastic records my barber gave me (I'm headed back to the haircut agency in early July)
Avatar 8:19pm
Bronwyn Bishop:

@Lizzie: I think that was his only musical. Wikipedia mysteriously claims he starred as Grover in a musical adaptation of The Monster at the End of this Book, but I can't find anything to back that up...
Avatar 8:20pm

@diciassette: you must be excited to get a haircut! i am FINALLY getting one tomorrow
Avatar 🎭 Swag For Life Member 8:20pm

I've decided to go for Lionel Barrymore in You Can't Take it With You (I'll get a second opinion, of course)

All Exclamation Point Musical Shows next time! Also: question mark musicals.
Avatar 8:23pm
Bronwyn Bishop:

@diciassette: heck yeah thats gonna look great!!
Avatar 8:25pm
Bronwyn Bishop:

@Henry: that is a GREAT idea!! i think "is there life after high school?" is the only question mark musical i can think of...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:28pm
Sweet Corn Lizzie:

Maybe just musical questions?
You have to give your answer in the form of a question?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:35pm
Webhamster Henry:

I thought How Now, Dow Jones had a question mark -- it OUGHT to.
Avatar 8:36pm
Bronwyn Bishop:

It should but sadly doesn't

What Makes Sammy Run? where's Charlie? Do Black Patent Leather Shoes Really Reflect Up? Do I Hear a Waltz?
Avatar 8:47pm
Bronwyn Bishop:

How did I forget Do I Hear a Waltz!?!?!?!
Avatar 8:47pm
Bronwyn Bishop:

maybe it didn't do well because the public was confused by it ending in a question mark instead of an exclamation point
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:51pm
Webhamster Henry:

Do I Hear a Waltz? I Do! I Do!
Avatar 8:51pm
Bronwyn Bishop:

that would be a great/weird double bill!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:54pm
Webhamster Henry:

I'm kind of glad Sondheim didn't end up doing Big Fish.
Avatar 8:55pm
Bronwyn Bishop:

Was he originally supposed to?? That would be interesting indeed
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:56pm

I like how Evening Primrose, being a TV Musical, didn't need to pad itself out with filler.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:57pm

So you're pencilled in for a Friday Dance Party, I hear.
Avatar 9:02pm

Yes!! I am going to pay homage to the lovably trashy decade of my childhood with an '00S DANCE PARTY!!! Backstreet Boys, Britney, Beyonce, Shakira, Gaga, Kesha, etc
