The organ on this Alice Bag cut reminds me of when Mary Weiss returned to performing around the Norton album - with Dave Amels rocking the organ and Dennis D. on drums, their version of Train From Kansas City sounded like Mary fronting the Rascals!

Swans are scary too. When I was in England in Sep/Oct last year I was taking a hike through some marshland and there was this swan colony. They're huge! They're like ostriches with little stubby legs, and they seem pissed off about it. I slinked past them submissively. Could've sworn I heard one of them mutter "Keep moving, shitbird."

Yeah, Mariano, there's a river we paddle in Michigan every year, and we go up and back and I always press to head out toward the lake, but there are swans down by the causeway, and Kate's basically said, "I think we know what the view looks like. This is far enough!"

ha, well it was a big seller! i think he was Berry's nephew or something
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:51pm
Nate K.:

I've read that Motown almost signed the Fall. That makes my head spin. They must have really been searching for a new angle.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:53pm
ultradamno:

I've read that before, might have been in Renegade. Smith said Gordy got a copy of Hex Enduction Hour and he (Smith) was like "Oh, shit" because of how might react to 'that line' in The Classical. I posit no one at Motown got that far into the record.

Avatar 10:55pm

meatloaf was signed to the Rare Earth label
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:55pm
Nate K.:

@Ultra, I heard "that line" is what busted the deal. So, who knows?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:55pm
mariano:

Gordy's son actually. There's a cool YT channel, Todd in the Shadows, does a show called One Hit Wonderland, does a 15-20 min video for each song/band. He did one about Rockwell, was interesting. Apparently BG was never a big part of his life, he was from a previous marriage. He got his record deal without his father's knowledge, which is cool I guess, but of course everybody else knew who he was, so...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:55pm
Nate K.:

As Meat Loaf?!
Avatar 10:56pm
Joe B:

yeah a male/female due - Meatloaf & Stoney was the billing
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:57pm

I've never heard of anyone at Motown commenting on it. Just Smith's words, and he never let facts get in the way of a good narrative.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:57pm

This Roy Brooks is heavy like a truckload of bricks. Great stuff.
Avatar 10:57pm
Joe B:

I doubt Berry was involved. There was thought they might start a UK version of a rock label like Rare Earth. I'm sure that line was the deal breaker but 'almost signed' is probably 'was one of dozens of bands they considered'
Avatar 10:58pm
Joe B:
