A three-hour exploration of excavations from the farthest reaches of humanity's hellish collective brain, through records, tapes, CDs, mostly scoured from country bumpkin thrift stores, creepy charity shops, backwoods junk stores, and even the internet - all mixed live. We don't judge, we just play 'em. Hosted by Rich in Washington.

in my '90s free-jazz phase, i was fairly obsessed with Pharoah. Saw him live, and he still blew like a mutha. May I request "Country Mile" off this album? haven't heard it in ages.

i don't think it was a real genre, just one of those things Brit music writers would throw out. Some don't stick ("nu-rave" anyone?), but unfortunately some really dumb ones like "krautrock" or "shoegaze" do.

In the documentary Autoluminescent Nick Cave complains a lot about the way the British press would write about The Birthday Party on the basis of being Aus., "sound like they spent too much time in the bush" etc. Same kind of provincialism that gave birth to that term (even though Faust originally coined it, not expecting it to become what it did)

It was, but my understanding is it came before the press got hold of it (there's an interview with Zappi out there where he says basically that)

The music press (English specifically) had such a back handed way of cutting things down in way that most of time many people started out agreeing with them before the realized they were actually be facetious . Just like that guy in the records store.

WD: It was joke that. During the war, the Germans were called "the krauts" as they used to eat "Sauerkraut." That is why we called a title of ours "Krautrock." Later, the British music industry established a new genre for german music, called "Krautrock." furious.com...
