Went a little over the limit there on WAB, but there was stuff that needed saying ... and then probably a bunch of stuff that didn't, true.

All the menagerie here ignored it in favor of final food-stealing efforts as they finished breakfast.

YETI BOB:

TomDash: Have you ever seen Miles Davis' review of "Money Jungle?" He HATED it. (I disagree)
Avatar 9:20am
YETI BOB:

"What am I supposed to say to that? That's ridiculous. You see the way they can fuck up music? It's a mismatch. They don't complement each other. Max and Mingus can play together, by themselves. Mingus is a hell of a bass player, and Max is a hell of a drummer. But Duke can't play with them, and they can't play with Duke.

Now, how are you going to give a thing like that some stars? Record companies should be kicked in the ass. Somebody should take a picket sign and picket the record company."

Avatar 9:27am
YETI BOB:

I got to see the 8-piece Crimson lineup last year and it was fantastic, truly one of the best shows ever. I also saw the 1980s lineup with Adrian Belew but I think the current version blows the doors off of 80s Crimson (which I still like!)
Avatar 9:28am

Saw Adrian Belew with the Talking Heads - he literally bounced around the stage

Yeti Bob, I saw the new band in Asbury Park, July 2017. Truly life altering: I didn't listen to KC at home for a year after that.
  9:29am
Mark R.:

Yes, I agree, nice to hear this one again. And Tom, nice to hear you in the daylight hours.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:29am
Krys O.:

Belew's Lone Rhino is exceptionally good, IMO.
Avatar 9:30am
YETI BOB:

Peter from Dover: That's funny, after I saw the band ALL I listened to at home was KC for a couple of weeks! (I agree, it was life altering, and anybody out there who gets a chance to see them should go.... if they ever tour again)
Avatar 9:31am

StringofPerils is correct, the t and s in “mots” are completely silent.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:42am

So Nirvana quoted Killing Joke AND the Damned on that.

Killing Joke claims they took it from Baby Come Back. Who knows? It’s four notes crammed in together on a fret board, lots of people could have stumbled on it
Avatar 9:51am
YETI BOB:

(listens to Eighties) OMG, it's the same damned song! (And I still don't like Killing Joke, just so humorless and flat)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:51am
Krys O.:

That's interesting, Doug in JC. Hadn't heard that.
Avatar 9:51am

@Doug: It's not just the 4 notes. It's the phrasing and rhythm. @Handy: Right on

The genre of messthetics goes back to DIY post-punk: www.hyped2death.com...
Avatar 9:58am

@Doug: Not going to argue about it but if there were a court case, and I were the judge, the Damned would be getting royalties :)
Avatar 9:59am
YETI BOB:

@Krys: I remember the Desperate Bicycles and am familiar with this style of music. Never heard the label "messthetics" applied to it before though. Learning new stuff every day here at WFMU.

@Krys interesting chapter in music, never heard of it (nor of Desperate Bicycles, heehee)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:02am
David (in London):

Desperate Bicycles' first single recorded about ten minutes away from where I am now sitting. Bit of a piece of hallowed ground for old school music heads in this part of town.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:02am
Krys O.:

@YetiBob: I only heard about the genre name back in 2006 when these comps came out: www.discogs.com...
Avatar 10:02am

I love that it's powered by wheezy unreliable keyboards, as a genre!

This show has been fantastic top to bottom. I usually couldn't (that is, *shouldn't*) stay up for your night slot, TomDash. Super glad to be catching this fill-in.

I found this album on 8-track in a cutout bin when I was a teen and proceeded to destroy my eardrums with it on headphones for like a year straight. I previously had no idea who the Dictators were.

hey all! speaking of police brutality and PSA's... check out fatal encounters dot org... it is currently the only national database of cop homicides. the FBI doesn't even keep that info! They have records of 28K killings by cops since 2000, with interactive maps showing the locations w. info about the # of people below the poverty line in the area & stuff like that. They're currently raising 20k to update their whole database with new columns of data for each case. thanks
