Wow, I've never seen this MC5 record cover! Looks like an early one.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:07pm
joe:

'ello folks
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:07pm
StringOFperils:

I have that volume of ReSearch Mag. It's an interesting read. Nice colour pic of Jello on the back, centrefold style, lying on a thousand exotica records, wearing tiger-claw gloves.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:07pm
Granny Spicy Tuna (e/em):

i like the vibe this set is setting
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:08pm
solo mon:

Yes! Granny! I picked Cruddy up again last year. So intense and beautiful. What a story, what a point of view. It has really aged well. And gag worthy gore, written in a way I’ve never seen before!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:08pm
chresti:

I thought that MC5 sounded a little like Elevators
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:08pm
Lotis Rhapsody:

The two go mighty well back-to-back.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:09pm
Franco Twinkie:

Elevators every goddamned day, fuck yeah!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:09pm

Oh wow. I've had that version of I Can Only Give You Everything on a radio mix tape since the early 80s and didn't realize it was the MC5!

Nazz!

Everything V.Vale and Juno put out is pretty amazing. There is also a great video floating around I think from Fuse of Jello going over is record colleciton

solo mon: i took a couple of Lynda Barry's writing workshops and learned her process. Got to see original brush-painted drafts of Cruddy! (she wrote the first draft with hand-ground Japanese ink and brush!)

Roky Road that is. Roxy Road was at the Roxy club in NYC.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:13pm

I was at the flea market and I found this Nazz record and I showed it to a young friend and told her she had to buy it. She said she didn't buy 45's. I said BUY IT! She bought it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:13pm

@Mr Fab that is amazing. Did he dedicate Your Gonna Miss Me to the ice cream
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:13pm

You don’t love me yet you love my ice cream

Otis, You are not the first person to have made the Roky road joke! Nah, they missed that golden opportunity, just a truck handing out FrozeToes n stuff.

Hiya, BC!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:19pm
Franco Twinkie:

Granny, I know. If something is essential, not because it's on some list, but gets to the very heart of the matter, you must preach, plead, bully, convince, because it is the fundamental truth, and it will never change.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:19pm

I watched an interesting barrage of Jello Biafra videos last night - his What Would Jello Do? YouTube segments. He's got some interesting perspective on state riots.

I’ve always pondered the meaning of the phrase “Fresh Fruit For Rotting Vegetables“. Any ideas?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:25pm
solo mon:

Sparks is 100 percent my favorite band of all the times.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:25pm
joe:

@Rich yeah Jello's spoken word albums were legit life changers for me. A friend of friends father gave us No More Cacoons when we were like 14 and nothing was the same again. As I got/get older I don't always see 100% eye to eye with Biafra but we absolutely play on the same field and I would rather hear from and have him influencing much more then others.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:25pm
Jan Turkenburg:

Had to come back to the screen to clicky star The Sparks!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:27pm
joe:

@Mr Fab I always took it to be the music as the Fruit and Jellos old man enemies the Rotten Vegetables
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:27pm
joe:

I always loved what I took as a send up to LZ I as the cover
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:27pm

I’m clicky starring this one too!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:27pm
joe:

Me too
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:27pm
Jan Turkenburg:

I second that ;-)
Avatar 12:28pm
Mr Fab:

Speaking of bad cops, they really bungled the murder of Peter Ivers, host of New Wave Theater, and composer of the Lady in the Radiator song.
Joe - makes sense to me, thx!
Avatar 12:30pm
Mr Fab:

Jello spoken word live was as exciting as a rock show. He came to my alma mater’s student union, also on the bill was Wanda Coleman and John Trubee.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:31pm
joe:

@Mr Fab I have to admit my iggnorence to Peter until the New Wave Theater started to appear on Night Flight channel. When I started to look back it was very disheartening to see some of the issues. I never dug very deep but I really should.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:32pm
Rich in Washington:

While sadly I've never been present for these happenings, my pal Toby has managed to drag Jello to KBOO studios on several occasions when he's in town to interview him and also record station IDs.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:33pm
joe:

We got to see Jello spoken word at City Gardens in Trenton about a year after being exposed to him. It was a really really heavy experience for us We were young The first time we had been in Trenton at a pretty volitile time there The Gulf War on the horizon. It was just really really intense. It's truly a moment I have not reflected on this much until I write this and realize how life impacting it was.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:33pm
Rich in Washington:

Toby used to live in SF and says he was at a table at the infamous Pere Ubu gig where everyone challenged Jello to put his money where his mouth is and run for mayor of San Francisco. They go way back.
Avatar 12:36pm
Mr Fab:

Wow, Twink the toy piano band is really going for a new sound!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:36pm
Franco Twinkie:

My brother-in-law told me that long ago his band was trying to get into this house that was locked so they could practice. One member of the band, who was notorious was with a young lady. As they worked on the challenge of breaking and entering, they wagered how long it would take the Lothario to work his magic. Ten minutes after they were inside, the swain and his companion were fucking under a table.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:37pm
Listener Bob in PGH:

122 is one of my all-time favorites!!!
Avatar 12:37pm
BC Sterrett:

Ha ha, I used to think the two Twink artists were the same as well. I was like, what an odd development
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:37pm
joe:

I mean Jello and the Dead Kennedys were directly or indirectly responsible for putting me on such trajectories socially and musically. My love NOMEANSNO starts with JB and DK my interest in surf can be subconsciously traced bay to EB Ray the reason I even come to know Ministry (Lard) So much
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:37pm
solo mon:

Yes living in SF a certain time and you hung around the scene you knew Jello. He hung out at a bar down the street from my apartment. People were challenging him all of the time, in fact it seemed to be somewhat of a past time for some of the young punks. I actually felt bad for him a lot of the time, as people were kind of rude to him often.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:38pm
Listener Bob in PGH:

"You better shut up and listen!" Always good advice.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:38pm
Franco Twinkie:

Punish Or Be Damned in my opinion it the best song by The Screamers.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:42pm
joe:

Mr Fab I am now making my mission to find a way to get in touch with a man I have no relation to in anyway and offer him a spot on Sheena's :)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:42pm
Rich in Washington:

The last time Jello was on KBOO he was incredibly prickly and curmudgeonly live Don Rickles, but he was apparently being mobbed by people as he was just in town to shoot a segment on Portlandia.
Avatar 12:44pm
Mr Fab:

Ha, thx joe, good luck!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:45pm
Rich in Washington:

like Don Rickles...
Dang stubby fingers..
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:46pm
joe:

@Rich my understanding is that although Jello was never a guy you could have a casual conversation with after the Gilman attacked he kind of became pretty stand offish especially in enviroments that were not 100% his. I have heard the same thing you are saying many times over the last few years but I also know people who ran into him at the GWAR B Q and said he was very kind and approachable.

Avatar 12:48pm
BC Sterrett:

Dana Countryman told me that he once had lunch with Vale and Biafra and could hardly get a word in. He just sat and listened.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:48pm
Rich in Washington:

I think you're right. He went off on an articulate rant on why he won't let people run up to him and take selfies with him.
He also recently said on one of his videos how when he attends demonstrations, he is approached by people who look nothing like activists who try to dare him to do illegal stuff, vandalism, and when he tells them 'no' they call him a pussy sellout, etc.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:48pm
joe:

@BC that is exactly what I would expect
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:49pm
Granny Spicy Tuna (e/em):

Vale and Jello can both get going on the talk, i can imagine how it would be if they got into it together! ha ha!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:49pm
joe:

GREAT SHOW THANK YOU
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:49pm
Rich in Washington:

I would LOVE to interview Biafra. He's one of those dudes who just needs a single prompt and he just goes off. I get super nervous interviewing people, but I prefer those kinds of interviewees.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:49pm
Otis:

DJ'ed at show in SF in 2006 at god forget where... and while a few times previous was at parties/shows with Jello in attendance had not spoken to him. Had a nice smoke outside (back when I was still on the cigs) and he was utterly fantastic and super nice. Fun night with Dana Countryman and Jean-Jacques Perrey hosting by Vale & RE/Search. Few days later was meeting Fab in LA at the Knitting Factory. Good memories!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:50pm

There's a young cartoonist in the Bay Area, Krusty Wheatfield, who has been interning with Vale and making comics based on their collaborations. Check it out! Great stuff!

I daresay those ReSearch/Incredibly Strange Music comps really re-ignited my record collecting. I had sort of given up and had at that point even sold off a large portion of my record collection.
Avatar 12:54pm
Mr Fab:

That sounds cool GST, will look for that. A few years ago I was wondering what ReSearch was up to. Vale’s still doing his thing, only they're like little pamphlet/booklet type pressings now.
