On a positive note, in the 10 weeks since “work from home” started in NYC I have not waved at so many strangers in my life. I mean you wear a mask and walk into places and that is the best way to indicate “Hey! I’m cool.”

  12:42am

@egal: Wearing masks when one is sick is a very common thing in Asian countries. The only reason it seems more prominent now is that there are more people from those countries in the U.S. nowadays.

@Jake Ah, didn't know that. I just thought was awfully smart when the rona hit.
Avatar 12:44am
Keilidh:

i loved wearing a mask all the time in Japan! without it I got sick constantly
  12:46am
JakeGould:

@egal: It has been a cultural practice as far back as the 1918 Spanish Flu outbreak and even before I believe. But like many things non-WASPs abandoned when moving to the U.S., that stuff was left behind. Nowadays being an immigrant is a whole different thing in the U.S. so people just keep their cultural norms more often than not.

@Keilidh: Welp… I think the hot summer trend will be masks!

Lisboner Pasc:

It's cool that in Taiwan the parents are really forbidden from allowing their kids to go to school if the kids are sick, there's a huge sense of civic responsibility and part of that is in the mask wearing. It's excessive, and the desire to cover up is a big part of culture there as I perceive it, but cool that, to take another eg., shop workers are responsible for carting out their rubbish for the bin collectors, and almost all public toilets I encountered (love me a supermarket bog!) are spic and span.
Avatar 12:53am
northguineahills:

When I lived in Japan in the late 80s as a kid, it was considered rude not to wear a mask if one was sick. I called them germ diapers. As Jake mentioned, it dates back to the 1918 Spanish Flu in Japan, and spread throughout the Japanese sphere of influence as their empire grew ij the 1920s-1930s, especially Korea, China and Taiwan...

Lisboner Pasc:

I mean the masks thing... I am totally for wearing them here, in order not to infect others... but in (pre-new-normal-cloud-collapse-going-inside-shops-feeling-scared-waving-at-strangers-era) it really is too much... most viruses are too small for masks to do anything, as I understand it. Just seemed part of a very scared culture putting up barriers which (at that time) weren't necessary. Like how it seems so many in Taiwan are afraid of going in the sea at beaches. Typhoons do of course spoil your picnics, but they're not every day, and even if ghosts DO live in the sea (people believe this and avoid the water) then why not say ni hao?
  1:00am
JakeGould:

@LisbonerPasc: Viruses themselves are small, but they don’t like fly in the air at their small size. They exist in droplets in the air that masks can stop.

A virus alone in the air is pretty much dead in seconds. But it can survive in a droplet. Thus masks to protect you from sneezing droplets that can contain the virus. Or droplets getting into you.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:06am
Lisboner Pasc:

@JakeGould: Aye you're not wrong, I hope people wear them now

i have a pretty intense opinion about going out, wearing masks, etc for the same reasons i've been outside maybe thrice a month.
Avatar 1:08am
Keilidh:

i don't really understand why people can't just take a virus/disease seriously.
  1:10am
JakeGould:

@Keilidh: Well, you’ll hate me but I have been out very regularly. Make sure to avoid crowds, always wear a mask and such.

I will say bars in Brooklyn are horrible. Probably elsewhere too. They serve to-go beer and drinks and there is always a non-socially distanced and unmasked day drunk crowd in front of them. Clogging up streets. That is sick.
  1:11am
JakeGould:

I went to Coney Island last week to get a jar of beach sand and honestly everyone was some variant of stupid. Very tense experience.
Avatar 1:12am

Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:20am
coelacanth∅:

i wear a mask solely to appease people...to help people be more comfortable (even though i don't think comfort is what most people need)
- and only within stores.
if my body entertained this particular corona virus it is so long ago i'm not contagious any longer. if not i'm not afraid of getting it.
there are points of view that you may not understand that are just as valid as your own.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:21am

...(although i'm not sure wearing the mask in stores helps people feel more comfortable, since the mask makes me sniffle)

northguineahills:

well, as Jake said, it's mostly water droplet born, so a sniffle, or exhaling can spread the virus. However, just exhaling means the droplets are miniscule and the virus would die relatively soon, sniffles a bit longer, coughs a lot longer, and sneezes, quite a while. And Cthulhlu help you if you expel mucus... That said, I only wear a mask if I'm going somewhere w/ a dense patronage, like a grocery store or hardware store. The gas station, not so much.

People should wear masks because you yourself could be symptomatic and put others at risk or you are — gotta be blunt — not as immune as you think you are.

Remember, the long term effects of this all are not known and just because you were infected at one point doesn't clearly indicate you are all clear as well.

I go out and I am careful, but I take what is happening seriously.

the asymptomatic thing is what many people seem not to consider. it's okay to be skeptical or unbothered, but i think it's important to be mindful and safe.

FWIW, what is being discovered with kids who had no obvious symptoms but suffering inflammatory diseases like Kawasaki disease is utterly scary.

Peter it's possible but very unlikely i'd have no symptoms, given my chronic physical situation.
also the tests still have a high degree of inaccuracy, and going to get one would expose myself to a portion of the population with a higher than average likelyhood of having the virus.

JakeGould:

@coelacanth∅: I honestly don’t believe your self assessment. In mid-February I had a sudden onset of the worst “flu” of my life. Headaches and pain for days prior that I attributed to overworking. Then I get a 103.5F and then 6 days later I am “better” with no fever but I feel like a cripple. I mean I could barely walk even… From the “flu”…

The symptoms of dry cough, shortness of breath, headaches and no real “flu” symptoms past that are the keys for me.

I volunteered to donate plasma but no response since I had no official test… But if I went to the hospital in February they would have just sent me home with generic “Rest up…” instructions.

@coelacanth∅: “i wear a mask solely to appease people...to help people be more comfortable…” If you believe you have had it, you had it. And you should engage in preventative measures not to “ appease” people but because you don’t want to run the risk of spreading. That’s about all I have to say about that.

Of course we should all be safe and aware, but let us not forget that we are human beings and that the probability of getting a “regular" sickness which are common in our life time is more likely. Yes absolutely we should be aware and cautious of the pandemic, but when people are unsure and of a sniffle or a cough and start thinking about some of the most serious scenarios, this is not healthy for any human being! I mean seriously if your mind is telling your body that you're very sick...

@Keilidh: Icelandic had a more archaic grammar form then other germanic languages, and then there's the letters that have been phased out in the rest of Europe since the dawn of the printing press, at least the pronunciation makes since once you learn it.

Considering that Finnish Uralic (some debate it's a Indo European isolate) and Sami is pure Uralic, it doesn't surprise me, those languages are hard for Indo-European speakers.

@Sigurður:I understand Brazilian Portueguese, b/tn music and the many Brazilians in Florida. I'm fluent in (mexican) spanish.

@ Ngh ok man, yeah I'm fully aware of the laungage tree. I lived about 3 years in Norway and thought after about one year in Oslo that I had the Norwegian laungage pretty much sussed. I went further north and realized that no no I've not got the laungage sussed. Listening to the Nordic languages with an Icelandic ear has been such a joy in my life! Even on the western isles of Scotland mixtured in in the English lang with a wii bit of Gael. Mexican Spanish that's sounds like a good thing to know. Which part of Mexico does you're Spanish come from? My Portuguese comes from Bahia, Brazil

Aight cool, the results of the laungage tree is that you have two types of Norse, southern Norse and Northern Nors. Danish is is Southern Norse and can result in like having a potato in the back of the throat sorta like Dutch. Long story short, Denmark invaded Norway and also they have sooooo many dialects.
