Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:04pm
Matt Fiveash:

Scott! Why not both?

I had a friend who OD'd on heroin (but didn't die) and when he came to in the ambulance the EMTs asked him what day it was and he said with some confidence "Funday"

RIP Little Richard

That guitar solo sounded better than usual.

Anybody else willing to confess that they first heard Directly From My Heart as performed by the Mothers?
  7:13pm
CC:

Soooo smooth!!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:13pm
Matt Fiveash:

Lothian- a New Orleans cat named Justin Adams. Not a household name but on many, many great sessions...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:14pm
ultradamno:

I could imagine Paul LePage or someone like him using that anecdote to ban using Naloxone
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:15pm
Scott Williams:

Ira: hand raised. It's a pretty killer Sugarcane Harris performance
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:17pm
Matt Fiveash:

Scott (& Ira, and everybody, why not)- Check out Don & Dewey's version of Pink Champagne" for a)peak Sugarcane and b)cool musical similarity to Directly From My Heart.
  7:18pm
JakeGould:

This show, Scott Williams’ show and Daniel Blumin’s show have all really edumacated me about music.
  7:20pm
Lothianman:

Thanks Matt. Amazing how often the studio guys are overlooked
  7:20pm
CC:

I'm surprised that Wet Willie didn't do more Little Richard covers???
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:24pm
Matt Fiveash:

Lothian- to clarify, it's Justin Adams on Directly From My Heart. Dunno who plays on Cherry Red, although it's Vee Jay era so could be... Jimi Hendrix! But I don't know.

Wow, thanks Matt. There was a lot there that I didn't remember or maybe never heard. Yes it was enough that he was Little Richard. So great.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:28pm

R I Penniman
  7:28pm
Lothianman:

So the only one left from the core is Jerry Lee.at this point?
  7:29pm
P-90:

I was thinking about that as these were playing: the engineers really knew what they were doing, and knew what they wanted to do with Richard. Intentionally letting him overload the mic to some degree was often a part of the sound.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:30pm
ultradamno:

Who Richard once called The King Of Stupidity
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:31pm
Corey:

Totally agree. I remember Gaylord Fields saying something along those lines when Chuck Berry died. Chuck Berry wasn't great because he was influential, he was great because he was great. Or something like that. So too Little Richard. Liked that so much that I remembered it more or less (hopefully I didn't bungle the quote too bad. If I did sorry, Gaylord!).
  7:31pm
P-90:

I’ve asking been asking myself the same thing all week: does this mean Jerry Lee’s the only one left? Who else is there?
  7:32pm
Lothianman:

Great comment P90! The beginning of distortion as an art form
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:33pm
Matt Fiveash:

Corey- That's pretty much what Gaylord said on Dave the Spazz's Chuck Berry sendoff show. I know because I was there too!

Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:35pm
ultradamno:

Ronnie Hawkins is still alive, right?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:37pm
Matt Fiveash:

The Hawk I believe is still alive and Lloyd Price is still with us.
Avatar 7:38pm
Todd-o-phonic Todd:

I think I'm only familiar with the Danny James version of this opus. Though it wouldn't surprise me if it's the same version!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:38pm
Matt Fiveash:

But as far as the eight or nine headed rock & roll mt rushmore I think Jerry Lee is the last man standing.
  7:38pm
Lothianman:

Jerry Lee is pretty much a thing of the past at this point. Saw him back in the late 80s and it appeared he was going through the motions even then. I've always pitied the 50s guys being stuck in a rut
  7:38pm
CC:

Yeah...some people still know how to do it!!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:38pm
Chop Scott:

Here I is!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:38pm
Corey:

Phew! Though I forgot that you were on that distinguished panel. Sorry about that. One of my favorite WFMU episodes of all time.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:40pm
Matt Fiveash:

No need to apologize! Yeah that was a good un. Pat Byrne and Joe Belock were there too, and maybe more?
Avatar 7:41pm
Todd-o-phonic Todd:

It would be interesting to see a tally of how many musicians with the "Slim" monicker were fat and how many were skinny.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:41pm
Matt Fiveash:

Like bald guys named Curly or 300 pound gorillas named Tiny!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:43pm
ultradamno:

Or the president being called a stable genius.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:43pm
Gaylord Fields:

@Corey: That was the gist of it. And it applies just as strongly to Little Richard. I roll my eyes at the whole “magical Negro”–ness of this (and I don’t even mean that in a racial way, though it does apply here). These artists are great because they’re great, and the fact that they taught all the Marty McFlys how to rock runs a waaaay distant second.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:44pm
Matt Fiveash:

Then there's the skinny guys called Slim who later got fat.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:44pm
dave wuz here:

where are all the medium sized musicians?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:44pm
Matt Fiveash:

Hahahaha
  7:45pm

What is the opposite of medium?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:45pm
ultradamno:

Average White Band?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:45pm
ultradamno:

If group superlatives count.
Avatar 7:46pm
Todd-o-phonic Todd:

The British Invasion also breathed new life into most of the guys being discussed here. Not only in terms of getting their songs out there, but they fed off the energy at shows etc..
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:47pm
Gaylord Fields:

Besides JLL, Ikm expansive enough to count Brenda Lee, Don Everly (admittedly half an act), and perhaps Wanda. Also Vera Lynn.
  7:47pm
Lothianman:

In any event there should be credit for those that broke through and at the same time respect for those that that didn't and deserved it
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:47pm
Gaylord Fields:

*I’m expansive enough
  7:48pm
CC:

Gaylord...Johnny Winter was a real white guy who loved Muddy Waters so much that he was possessed to play guitar!!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:48pm
ultradamno:

Expanded Gaylord Fields would be a fine rnr nickname
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:50pm
Matt Fiveash:

Gaylord you misspelled "I'm" and "expensive"!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:50pm
Gaylord Fields:

@ultradamno: More like a quarantine-related, under-exercised, stress-eating description of my current physical state.
  7:51pm
JakeGould:

Stultified Gaylord Fields
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:52pm
Gaylord Fields:

Matt: My newblues song will be titled “I’m Expensive, but I’m Cheap.” It exploys the pentatonic scale.

PQQ- yeah not sure whether it predates the Herbie Hancock 70s funky version of Watermelon Man!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:54pm
Gaylord Fields:

Billy “The Kid” Emerson is still alive. As is Phyllis Coates, who isn’t a rock ‘n roller but deserves a shout-out anyway.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:54pm
Matt Fiveash:

Gaylord- If it's good enough for Yngwe it's good enough for me!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:55pm
