It's National Receptionists' Day. I would suggest doing something nice for a receptionist you might encounter today, but they're all out of work and no one goes outside, so...National Memorial Receptionists Day. They will be missed.

Start to finish, THEEEEE best Kraftwerk record, sez me
  12:42am
blackbodegabag:

this is truly the best Kraftwerk album
  12:42am
JakeGould:

@Scott: That is debatable but not worth the energy. They were a great band.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:43am
ultradamno:

RIP Florian...and Ralf, who I have to assume has expired of a broken heart mechanism.
  12:44am

They are the only band that can live on as holograms.

Fantastic Kraftwerk show last night on Polyglot show on WFMU, 3 hours of solid V2 Florian Schneider. www.wfmu.org...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:44am
Scott Williams:

@Jake it's the one album where the robots and the humans pulled equal emotional weight
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:45am
Scott Williams:

@Aitch, yeah Jesse really hit it outta the park with last night's Florian tribute!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:46am
Aitch:

Sharing the word on that one Scott W, what a show.
  12:48am
JakeGould:

@Scott: I still really like “The Man-Machine” and “Computerworld”
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:53am
Scott Williams:

@Jake, I do too! I also love all 4 pre-Autobahn albums they wrote off. But Radioactivity is the one I listen to all night
  12:54am
JakeGould:

And “Trans-Europe Express.” Also read about how they got they got whole idea to wear suits from a Gilbert and George art show.
  12:55am
JakeGould:

We gotta agree to disagree but agree because the core Kraftwerk catalog is always good.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:56am
coelacanth∅:

Scott, wouldn't that distinction go to autobahn?
i don't know the radio-activity album well, but as all the instrumentation is electronic, autobahn is the last album with "organic" instrumentation -and electronics.
  12:58am
JakeGould:

Wolfgang Flür on the band: “Ralf had a kind of German idea in mind. Germany also needed something like The Beach Boys. Something with self-understanding and immaculate presence, after the ugly wars that our parents had inflicted on the world. Something positive and youthful, that freed us from the stench of the past.”
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:59am
Scott Williams:

@coel, that's true, but on a subjective level Radioactivity has much more emotional heft for me.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:00am
coelacanth∅:

right on. i need to become better acquainted with it.
  1:00am
JakeGould:

The idea they saw themselves as a German “Beach Boys” is hilarious and extremely German in the best sense of the concept.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:01am
Aitch:

Computer World for me, no emotions whatsoever and the pure digital recording.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:01am
McGroovey:

I'm going to disagree to disagree re: Kraftwerk. If you know what I mean.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:02am
Scott Williams:

@Jake, that's a good quote, but most of Wolfgang's statements need to be taken with a grain of salt. He's appointed himself Ralf & Florian's interpreter to an artless world, somewhat bitterly, and against their wishes
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:02am
coelacanth∅:

i can't say i agree with that
  1:05am
Jim H:

This Fairy Tree is a nice piece. Very much of 1:00am.
  1:07am
JakeGould:

@Scott: True. I like the fact that at least Ralf and a Florian fully and artfully maintained their mystery. Yet still created music for the people.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:07am
ultradamno:

I stand resolute as a Ralf & Florian partisan. But it's all really good.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:08am
coelacanth∅:

Wolfgang did leave bitter; but i have read that Florian, at least, was acutely aware of the world viewing them as "german" and potentially identifying them with aspects of german history that they'd like to not be associated with.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:09am
ultradamno:

Plus, weren't they talking about The Stooges and Velvet Underground in terms of 'energy' a lot. Or at least for a quote I'm at least half remembering.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:11am
coelacanth∅:

the stooges were Ralf's favorite band...or was it Florian's?
  1:11am
JakeGould:

The best way to look at Kraftwerk is to look at them as art rock. They did the same thing that Robert Fripp did: They saw the prog world, said, “Nah… Gotta do something new.” and they did it.

Experimental, art, dance and hip hop were all influenced by them.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:12am
coelacanth∅:

(hence the reference in trans-europe express)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:14am
ultradamno:

Plus, I'm pretty sure Björk's sex 'bot video is a direct homage. OK, I'm being coy, I know it's All Is Full Of Love. And The Residents Krafty Cheese from Duck Stab/Buster & Glen is one of their homages.
  1:16am
JakeGould:

Let’s not forget the Nihilists in “The Big Lebowski.”
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:17am
ultradamno:

Yep and Sprockets...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:20am
Scott Williams:

Ralf was obsessed with The Stooges, true! He even sang about meeting Iggy on TEE
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:22am

I actually found an old pocket calculator under a bookshelf the other day. It still works!

Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:24am

Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:27am

This album has been my favorite PSG. Maybe because it has a similar structure to Fun House. Pretty much all rock A-side, increasing loosening through the B
