@coelacanth∅: When Turner Broadcasting acquired a ton of cartoons from MGM in the 1980s, they decided to branch out and create “weirdo” adult stoner t-shows based on them. It’s actually all crazy how it happened and why but it’s an example of a corporate entity allowing creativity to rule… As long as stoners with credit cards from the “Bank of Dad” watched the show.
  12:15am
jestercrimson:

I always knew my nightmare would sound like this tbh
  12:15am
JakeGould:

“On August 4, 1986, Ted Turner's Turner Broadcasting System acquired Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer/United Artists from Kirk Kerkorian; due to concerns over the debt load of his companies, on October 17, 1986, Turner was forced to sell MGM back to Kerkorian after approximately only 75 days of ownership. However, Turner kept much of MGM's film and television library made prior to May 1986 (as well as some of the United Artists library) and formed Turner Entertainment Co.”
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:16am
Rory:

Adult Swim is not what it was. Hit and miss now for me. Back in the day all night was solid gold!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:17am
coelacanth∅:

that's interesting Jake i've wondered how all those take-off characters could exist without a ton of lawsuit -never looked it up for some reason
Avatar 12:18am
Keilidh:

lol @jestercrimson! same

yeah dude I respect Adult Swim SO MUCH, and Turner in terms of selling out in the best possible ways. Cartoon Network and Adult Swim have been so much a part of my life! I also tune in to Adult Swim's online streams and there's even more show content there that is so creative

Folsom: My pretty face went to hell a long time ago!
  12:22am
JakeGould:

The thing is I think Turner did a better job of their acquisition of weirdo kids culture more than when D.C. acquired Charlton Comics. I mean not disrespect to anyone who likes “The Watchmen” (whose characters are all Charlton Comics Characters) but that overwrought crap — and the Dark Knight series — is responsible for every comic book character becoming dark and dour in the years that followed.

I think Adult Swim has better legs and longevity since it’s still based on the idea that cartoons can be fun.

  12:27am
BH:

Ted Turner's media legacy might be an interesting discussion that could be occurring soonish because of Ted has lewy body dementia.

But there's a lot of really interesting creative stuff there that has shaped things for better (or occasionally worse) over all his networks and other projects
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:27am
Franco Twinkie:

Jake, I worked on a TBS show for a year and a half, and it was great jig. The most fun I ever had on a show. But in the end, we got canned by the corporate decision makers for reasons I never fully understood. Oh well, that's show business!
  12:28am

Anybody wonder if Bela Lugosi would’ve liked Bauhaus?

  12:30am
JakeGould:

@BH: I think he’s truly the last of the fun/creative/impulsive media tycoons. Nowadays it’s all extremely corporate. If you think about what he did at the time, it was amazing. Still is…
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:31am
Rory:

BH: I concur
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:31am
Handy Haversack:

The Omni in Atlanta was the Turner HQ. At the top of the longest free-standing elevator in the world was the World of Sid and Marty Kroft. That was pretty cool.

Second that, Keilidh.
  12:35am
BH:

Some of Turner's more unusual holdings did not last long once he merged with other entities around 2000. By that, I mean Turner's pro wrestling company.

But yeah, the types that would be free-wheeling tycoons are now tycoons in other realms. Same thing could be said about sports team owners when Turner owned the Braves as opposed to now where it's very corporate and also there's Mark Cuban.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:36am
Rory:

BH: Agreed
  12:38am
BH:

In other words, they probably wouldn't let Elon Musk into a sports league that quickly these days.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:38am
colinmahns:

i think we're due for another round of ted turner trying to colorize a bunch of old movies again. i'm sure he's not doing much at the moment
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:38am

Howard Stern was just a modern day roadshow carnival/freak show.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:39am

Funny at the time. Now cringe worthy.
Avatar 12:39am
Keilidh:

i hope mark cuban listens to my show

i like how Howard Stern has gotten softer! I can still listen to some of his old stuff (especially with music guests) but it's hard sometimes
  12:40am

what would the 2020 version of movie colorization be.. trying to make things HD that were obviously not HD at the time?
  12:42am
jestercrimson:

@ Bh The criterion channel lol
  12:42am
JakeGould:

@colinmahns: Yeah, that stunk.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:43am
Handy Haversack:

Let George Lucas "fix" Ridley Scott movies.
  12:43am
BH:

There's some 90s culture stuff that really ages just as badly as any 80s culture. Like various standup comics who now complain that they can't get college campus gigs (or the ones that passed away before they had that problem)
  12:43am
JakeGould:

Also that Atlanta Braves tomahawk chop was not great. But hey…
  12:44am
JakeGould:

@HandyHaversack: Ridley Scott’s only decent preservation effort was with “Blade Runner.” What he did with “Alien” and the crappy sequels he approved past the “Aliens” immediate sequel is utter garbage.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:45am

Stern's career was built on unfunny 5th grade titty and dick jokes, now he wants to be taken seriously. fuck him
  12:48am
BH:

Jerry Seinfeld's just mad that the college students aren't as interesting as the one he dated in the 90s
  12:49am
JakeGould:

@JoeB: The only time I ever liked Howard Stern was when he was on 66 WNBC AM back in the day. And titty jokes meant something to me back in junior high school.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:50am
Rory:

@Joe B: Stern said it’s just locker room behaviour. I never that kinda shit in a locker room loooool!
Avatar 12:51am

they could still mean something. stern's were never funny. I'll take seinfeld's boring dad jokes over stern's attempts to be edgy or serious or whatever it is he tries to do these days

And I know complaining about “modern” things is lame, but honestly is there one comedian out there who is really tackling the garbage world we now have? I mean Drumpf is one thing but now we have a global pandemic and none of them can do anything comedic past being morally outraged and white.
Avatar 12:52am
Keilidh:

yes the young ppl!!
  12:52am
JakeGould:

Larry David is the only comedian out there who does a decent job mocking MAGA loons and Drumpf.
Avatar 12:52am

I've got nothing against selling out. stern sold himself out from the beginning. desperate to kiss the ass of any celebrity that would be nice to him, just like his buddy trump.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:53am
Andrew Waterloo:

You can't really call someone a sellout when they're goal was to be big in the first place.
  12:53am
JakeGould:

Could at least one young comedian take on this garbage world? For once? Or are they all brainwashed by utterly unfunny improv?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:53am
colinmahns:

@JakeGould episode 1 is one of the only consistently funny things out right now. leftist podcasters like jake flores and jack allison are also a lot funnier than many of the mainstream political comedians like your late night hosts, but that's just my taste!

Which is all to say: Jimmy Fallon excused his normalization of Drumpf back in 2016 and now he’s pathetic at doing anything other than strum a stupid guitar and sing unfunny songs during Coronavirus.
  12:55am
BH:

In the realm of stand-up comedians and probably not aging well... I was just messing around afterdark on RadioGarden one night and ended up listening to a Catholic priest who decided to detail his objections to Sam Kinison.. long after he had passed. Which is a.. yeah.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:55am

If you're still staying Drumpf.. good luck finding a funny comedian.. I mean.. come on that shit was always lame.

I did not know/I forgot that Cartoon Network did a music CD. That was really cool to hear. Maybe we can hear Home Movies audio sometime?
When I heard the song name "Women of the Wand", I remarked "Women of the Hitachi Wand. Hâ hâ."
Then I put the phrase "Women of the Wand" into the search engine; Potion's album on cassette tape is NOT the most common image.

BTW: D&D update:

One-line recap: "Mato, our love can truly flourish only after my snake goddess eats your friends. You think about it." After a fair amount of dithering, they decided the most dangerous group after them was the tiger-obsessed fighting cult so went to try to figure out a way into their dungeons. It seems to have required killing the entire snake-worshiping assassin staff of a local inn. But now they're deep underground and THINK they're pretty close to the enormous snake that might be able to tell them what they've done wrong lately.

"More Evil than the last" - if musical albums collected quotes ala books
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:20am
Andrew Waterloo:

"Coil formed in a flat above a TV repair shop in 1978. They were loud, cheeky, sharp and popular – and then due to bad luck, were obliged to pause for 30 long years, after the famous ‘four banks in a weekend’ robbery of 1980 put several members of the band in prison for a very long time. Two died inside sadly, but in truth, they didn't need a keyboard player and two bass players anyway"
