any of y'all seen drawing restraint 9? it's been on my list for a while

hey jake! we need a smaller boat so as to avoid any ripples large enough to attract the attention of the leviathan
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:05am
mariano:

That's right, Mr. Pumpy, lol. I haven't seen Drawing Restraing, sv, but I did manage to make it through the Cremaster Cycle when all that was going on in the early 2000s.
Avatar 12:06am

no kidding! what'd you think? that's also on my list, would like to catch it [or pieces of it] in theaters if they ever show it again

hey mb! thanks for the kind words - some of the other segues in this show ain't so good so i'm gonna appreciate the ones that work!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:10am
mariano:

That's a tough one, sv. I'm no art maven, so I have no way of really evaluating it. The films have some absolutely brilliant moments, they're visually really arresting in places. Then there are parts that are incredibly drawn out and tedious (especially in 3). The whole idea behind the cycle is waaaay out there. I've read synopses and can follow along, but wouldn't trust myself to be able to explain it. My verdict: Guy's got one hell of an imagination.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:10am
Mr. Pumpy:

sv...this is my favorite Ash Ra Tempel album! Not on the top of many lists, but it just sends me. Great choice...my friend!

Mr. P: Yeah in NYC when the big show at the Guggenheim was on and they played the films at various places in the city.
Avatar 12:12am
sv:

mariano, i think that's probably about the impression i'd get after watching the films - i've seen a couple of matthew barney's shorter films and thought they were really interesting, if esoteric

Gooooood evening everyone.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:18am
mariano:

Hey coela!

One scene that was really cool in Cremaster 2 was of a recording studio vocal booth filled with bees, the buzz going through the mic and really amplified, with Dave Lombardo bashing out a thrash beat in another room. Then in the control room there's Steve Tucker sitting on a sofa covered with bees, growling the lyrics into a telephone. Murphy's Law and Agnostic Front are in 3.
Avatar 12:18am
sv:

hey Fox!
Avatar 12:18am
sv:

mariano, that's so cool!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:19am
Mr. Pumpy:

sv...if you haven't, Voyage 34 - The Complete Trip by Porcupine Tree is a cool release. There is a guitar motif in it which many think is lifted from Pink Floyd's, The Wall (No Education), but in reality it is Steven Wilson's homage to Manuel Göttsching's Inventions For Electric Guitar, which is widely considered an Ash Ra record. Good stuff.

sv...the new Elder album just dropped...doom lords gone prog, then some, and beyond. I spent time with it and it has come around and delivered the goods. I'm recommending it to anyone that is way into tunes. It's a ride that has divided fans and critics...often an earmark of quality! beholdtheelder.bandcamp.com...

Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:53am
coelacanth∅:

listened to the whole explosions in the sky today and decided once and for all what i've felt for a long time which is that they have a formula that they barely deviate from... i bought it anyway! but i only gave 'em a buck. i feel there are 2 standout tracks: the last one and another (maybe the first?)
...i already have 2 of their albums.

- so far there's only been one that i didn't get. a couple a days ago. a little too digital-sounding for my taste.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:57am
Mr. Pumpy:

@coel...yes! I agree. I like to throw it on for doing chores or reading, but they are a one trick little horsey...no doubt. I don't throw them on much, but they do relax me...and have some mellow chops.

Regarding Matthew Barney and The Who Cremaster cycle, it’s like any art: If you get it and it resonates with you, that’s it. That said, it’s all filled with Catholic references and allusions and if that is not something you have some exposure to it all falls flat.
.
But “Dancer in the Dark?” *chef kiss into the air*
  1:00am
JakeGould:

“the whole”

mariano & MP i take it to mean basically we're either a rainbow chromatography of harmonics or we're all wearing a pot on our head as Moe bangs it
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:00am

i have been going through some bandcamp bookmarks and wishlist items and getting them while i'm at it.
now, as i'm sure you've learned, they're waiving their (fair) share on friday again.
i already have 3 things in my cart!

  1:05am
JakeGould:

“Dancer in the Dark” resonates with me because while I don’t really care for Lars von Trier, Robby Müller — cinematographer for some classic Jarmusch films — is cinematographer and it’s beautiful to look at. And Bjork is an immigrant factory worker treated like crap and that works for me too.
Avatar 1:06am

yeah, as someone who puts stuff on there myself i don't mind them taking a slice so long as they can stay afloat. they provide quite a service.

@Jake...I hear you! Müllers work in Dancer in the Dark is amazing, as in most whatever he works on. Paris, Texas; Barfly; and Dead Man! I highly appreciate the color palette in Dancer in the Dark, which I'm sure he was instrumental in as well. Good stuff.

one thing i've bookmarked for friday is another fmu commentboarder "WillCrete".
i must've bookmarked his page a long time ago but it fell through the cracks.
...i'm not endorsing it yet; but i have a feeling there's some goodness in his catalogue. giving it a good listen between now and friday.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:17am
mariano:

Oh yeah, I've always meant to see Juniper Tree, appreciate the reminder.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:18am

greatb good point -especially as they store almost everything in .wav format.
still a whole lot less overhead than storing physical items.

i think criterion added it to their collection [maybe]
  1:20am

According to a couple independent sources, Bandcamp's operating revenue is $100,000. That's peanuts.
  1:21am
greatb:

exactly and that it gives folks a way to share what they bought without necessarily bringing more plastic into the world. $100k- wow!

i watched it on criterion streaming but i dont think its out on dvd yet
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:23am
Mr. Pumpy:

Sumac! I was handed the full length previous to this one to review as my first job for my last writing gig. It was a pleasure at the time. I soon sabotaged myself a year and a half later...and this band probably best encapsulates how I was feeling for EIGHTEEN months! so emotive. Aaron turner does it right. in my stupid opinion! (that was a big part of the problem...it's all so silly, reviewing a large piece of work with 24 hours notice! Thanks for listening, but SUMAC brought all f those feelings rushing back…and they kick out the cathartic jams!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:24am
coelacanth∅:

i assume that's per year, right?
...it is peanuts, relatively speaking... but i could live comfortably on that for 3 years.
...or to put it another way, if i made that much money i'd buy 4 times more music from bandcamp than i do now!
(and physical copies, when available)
Avatar 1:25am
sv:

Sumac is one of the most creative bands in metal right now, i think! i was late to the party on them but i really, really like their music.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:25am
coelacanth∅:

...well, physical copies, depending on how into the music i am and how attractive the package is.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:26am
Mr. Pumpy:

sv...word
Avatar 1:27am
mb:

Sumac has been a very grassroots find for me. Saw a guy with a Sumac shirt on the subway the day after i saw Russian Circles open for Mastodon. I had read an interview with Brian Cook and made the connection. A rare instance that i didn't hear them here 1st.
  1:27am
greatb:

it is amazing to think that single big-name artists probably have tour budgets 100x-plus that and places like fmu and bandcamp are running entire ecosystems on a fraction
  1:28am
Dean:

Yes, annual revenue, according to these sources. But since Bandcamp is a private company, it's hard to know how accurate that figure is.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:28am
Mr. Pumpy:

I saw Sumac open for Neurosis a few years back. Needless to say...it rocked my socks right the fuck off my foots!
Avatar 1:29am

This is a nice tid bit "A live album recorded at Brian Turner’s WFMU radio show was released on February 2, 2018 through SIGE Records as cassette edition limited to 200 copies."

Dean:

FWIW, the sources I consulted were Mint Global and Orbis.

@mb...those are some of the best connections and discoveries. Happenstance, albeit well informed...

So lucky i got to see Aaron Turner (of Sumac) with Isis. Those were true jams when not many heavy bands were jamming live. They toured with the mighty Candiria a bunch,

@mb...I saw ISIS open for Neurosis as well. BUT, ISIS headlining was always a true treat.

That $100,000 figure seems like a misinterpretation; perhaps it’s just the $$$ left over after pay and operating budget is handled. Bandcamp has about 29-30 staffers spread all over the world. It’s all remote work.
  1:38am
ZeeBee:

I think it was maybe me! I used to use a different handle, Zpulpa. Haha. Thanks for playing. I listened to this new one in the bath the day it came out and felt so shaken by it, in a good and heavy way.

Did you know anyone that used to work there? I know this fella Tom B. that worked there for many years...I know him from the ol' and now defunct stonerrock.com message boards! Anyhow...you may know who I mean if you were of age at all before they closed down. You may have just been a patron, but it sound like the joint had a family vibe from all I've heard about it. Either way...cool to hear the name mentioned here.
Avatar 1:44am

hey pump, i actually never went there unfortunately - it closed down before i was old enough to go and hang out there. real shame - it was the one place in birmingham (aside from the firehouse) that consistently booked more adventurous music when i was growing up

FWIW, if you do the math on the last “no fee” day, they pulled in $4.3 million which is 15x a normal Friday. That means a normal Friday is $286,000. Assuming their fees are 10% to 15% that is $28,000 to $42,000 per day normally. Do the rest of the math and the $100,000 figure makes less sense.

Article on the no fee day: https://techcrunch.com/2020/03/23/musicians-pulled-in-4-3m-after-bandcamp-waived-revenue-shares-for-24-hours/

Most every "heavy music" release from 2020 has been kicking my ass. Keilidh has been propping up some technically sound music. William B is giving a reassuring nod from the beyond, for sure. 2021 is going to be even more brutal, no doubt.
