	4:00pm Funky16Corners: It's one of those pieces that gets remounted every few years, the way Threepenny Opera often does.
	4:01pm StringOFperils: This recording, I think, has to have had a huge influence on the, much later, and much different, recordings of Jon Hassell.
	4:02pm Funky16Corners: I can't imagine a horn player coming up in the 60s, 70s or 80s that wouldn't have been touched in some way by these records
	4:05pm StringOFperils: Even classical composers like Bernard Hermann, i.e. the film score for Scorcese's TAXI DRIVER

	4:07pm Funky16Corners: I read a bio of Gil Evans a few years back, and it kind of bugged me how someone who made so much great art, which was in its way commercially successful, didn't make much of a living doing it. It never took the edge off his sound, though. If anything he got edgier as the years wore on.

	4:14pm StringOFperils: He even had nice trumpets. Saw him near the end, with Bill Evans (not that one) on guitar, etc. He had this beautiful red (like anodized aluminum) horn. And he (characteristically) laid back (a lot), to let everyone else shine.
	4:15pm doctorjazz: For a while, thus was the most overplayed classical piece out there.

	4:16pm Funky16Corners: I think the harpist on this session made a nice payday for about 5 minutes work

	4:20pm Funky16Corners: How's everybody else holding up? Any "essential" employees among us? My wife is a teacher and has been tele-teaching since it started.
	4:23pm northguineahills: When I was an undergrad, it seemed every kid who wanted to be chic, had a coltrane or miles poster, so I ignored them. Then I saw Sam Rivers, William Parker, and Mathew Shipp live. That took me on a wild ride. Then I discovered Alice Coltrane before I graduated, then late Coltrane and electric Miles. I came full circle w/in a few years of that, but I still think most of those poster poseurs didn't have a clue, and were my age's bachelor pad music lads of the time.

	4:29pm northguineahills: I love the music and person of John, and love the music of Miles, but can't stand the person that was Miles. But as I say many times, I can love the art and not like the artists, as otherwise, there will be little left for me to love in this world...

	4:34pm Funky16Corners: @NGH - Yeah, Miles as a person is a tough sell, but I try to look at the life of a black artist of his stature in the 40s/50s/60s and I understand his anger, Certainly not the physical manifestations thereof. But the music has always hit me so deeply. Coltrane is of course the perfect contrast (as a person).
	4:35pm Funky16Corners: @Erica - Yes, though Miles isn't unheard of in kids his age, when people hear 'Sean Coltrane' they start asking questions.

	4:38pm Funky16Corners: BTW - I always assumed - because if the quality - that this must have been a radio broadcast, but there isn't any info in that regard on the CD
	4:38pm StringOFperils: @NorthGH>>The period of time that encompassed Miles coming up was the culmination of decades of unbelievable ugliness with respect to the lives of black people in America. Miles was a well-heeled dentist's son, but that had little bearing on his profound disgust with the racial thing, and with the predatory exploitative nature of the music industry that he perceived as being what he might call a bunch of scheming white motherfuckers. He was an angry man (never a pretty thing, no matter the circumstances). the substance abuse added to his irrasciblity, in additon to which creative genius is impatient and anxious. I'd be afraid to be in a room with the guy, but I was alway empathetic with his outlook, despite the hideous appearance of his outward personality at times.
	4:40pm Matt from New Orleans: Just read that Mort Drucker passed away. I always loved his work in Mad Magazine.
	4:40pm doctorjazz: Charlie Parker is supposed to have really crapped on Miles when he was young and in Bird's band. Hard to know how much that Affected Miles (or Bird's heroin use as well), but he was still at an impressionable age.
	4:40pm Funky16Corners: @Matt - I saw that. Drucker was a big fave of mine when I was a teenaged cartoonist
	4:41pm Funky16Corners: @Doc - In addition to being a virtuoso, Bird also seemed to pass on his bad habits to younger band members, as Davis reportedly did with Coltrane
	4:43pm northguineahills: My caveat w/ Miles, comes w/ his treatment of his first two wives, especially Betty. Coltrane was an addict, as far as the eyewitness record goes, he never mistreated his wives, possibly save cheating on Juanita when he met Alice, and I think the universe is better for that.

	4:44pm Funky16Corners: It's one of the great conundrums, how some people are capable of making beautiful art, while simultaneously being complete assholes.

Then I saw Sam Rivers, William Parker, and Mathew Shipp live. That took me on a wild ride. Then I discovered Alice Coltrane before I graduated, then late Coltrane and electric Miles. I came full circle w/in a few years of that, but I still think most of those poster poseurs didn't have a clue, and were my age's bachelor pad music lads of the time.

But the music has always hit me so deeply. Coltrane is of course the perfect contrast (as a person).

Miles was a well-heeled dentist's son, but that had little bearing on his profound disgust with the racial thing, and with the predatory exploitative nature of the music industry that he perceived as being what he might call a bunch of scheming white motherfuckers. He was an angry man (never a pretty thing, no matter the circumstances). the substance abuse added to his irrasciblity, in additon to which creative genius is impatient and anxious. I'd be afraid to be in a room with the guy, but I was alway empathetic with his outlook, despite the hideous appearance of his outward personality at times.

Coltrane was an addict, as far as the eyewitness record goes, he never mistreated his wives, possibly save cheating on Juanita when he met Alice, and I think the universe is better for that.
