@matty: Yeah, I lived in Brooklyn from '98 to 2017, and to this day I'm still amazed when I tell people I lived there and they look at me like I survived 20 years in a war zone and must be some kinda tough guy. By '98, NYC was largely Disneyfied and got more so over the time I was there. I'm back home in New Orleans, a city that's always been exponentially more dangerous than even 70s NYC, and more than one person has given me a shocked look when I mentioned I lived in Brooklyn.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:31pm mariano:

@David: The New Orleans homicide rate has, unfortunately, always been among the highest and often has been the highest in the US. Shootings literally every day. Most of it gang-related, but bystanders do get caught in the crossfire (there was a gun battle on Canal St not long ago in which I think 10 bystanders were wounded). It's been getting steadily if slowly better, but statistically more dangerous than NYC by an order of magnitude.

@mariano: New York is now considered the safest (large) city in the US.
Avatar 12:36pm Joe B:

Greetings all, thanks for tuning in!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:37pm G:

@mariano: Actually, in recent years the homicide rate here in New Orleans has been trending down from a very high number. The thing people who live here are most focused on these days is ppl breaking into cars to look for anything valuable (often by breaking a window, which is annoying and costly), and stealing deliveries off porches.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:40pm mariano:

@G: Yeah, the homicide rate is definitely nothing like the mid-90s. Car break-ins and muggings are what I see the most in the paper, carjackings too. Still a lot of shootings and homicides though -- two on today's front page: www.nola.com
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:46pm Mr. Pumpy:

Greeting Joe and all! Playing hooky again and it's costing me money and I'm fine with that...for now.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:46pm David (in London):

@mariano @G Thanks for the scoop. Unfortunately, even here in (relatively) gun-free UK, crime marches on. London's well-publicised knife crime explosion is depressingly real across parts of the city.

D. Lightfoot, but housing was cheap and my property taxes were $45.00 a year
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:51pm Handy Haversack:

@Mr. Pumpy, but at least it's expensive!

Yeah, bought a house near Bienville and Jeff Davis for $60K back then.

There's a Berlin in CT, accent on the "BER".
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:53pm Mr. Pumpy:

My friend used to live in a warehouse converted to a loft space in Williamsburg, Brooklyn. This was in the early 90s before Brooklyn became more expensive than Manhattan. She was right on Roebling over the Williamsburg Bridge. It was dirt cheap and a cool place to hang...but not without it's challenges. I remember once a car went on fire outside her place...and it burned for about 45 minutes before anyone even showed up to deal with it. "Just another car on fire." Still...I'd take it back.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:54pm Mr. Pumpy:

@Handy...it's gotta be good!
Avatar 12:57pm Hubig Pie:

D Lightfoot. purchased my Bywater house for $65k in'92. And the Hummingbird Hotel was a place where people checked in and were never seen again

Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:57pm steveo:

@Mr. Pumpy, when I lived on First Avenue, I was afraid to go to Avenue A. When I moved to Avenue B, I was afraid to go to Avenue C; and when I visited a friend on Avenue C a couple of weeks ago, I was afraid to go to Avenue D.
Avatar 12:58pm SmokinJ:

So good..
Avatar 12:58pm D. Lightfoot:

My first apartment by myself was in Baton Rouge in the early 90s. Old house by BRHS converted to a duplex, $150 a month for a one-bedroom with a garage/driveway and a front and back yard, water and electric included. I wouldn't return to South Louisiana if you gave me a house for nothing.
  1:00pm jt:

Mr. Pumpy: W/burg in the late 80's there would be two cars per month torched right in front of where I was living. That was just this block...You could set your watch by it. They would be picked over by various 'scrappers' / parts shoppers then go up in flames. My neighbors car was stolen. Later, early 90's when I got an old Ford,I would leave my truck doors unlocked to keep the windows from being smashed, people would sleep in there. I would find blood on the side view mirrors, it was a special time...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:01pm David (in London):

@steveo - Hello there. Following our brief chat on Ken's accu last Wednesday, I took your lead and did some Yoko analysis. I was going to post the link this coming Wednesday, but work (annoyingly) might prevent me from listening. Could you do it for me?
Avatar 1:01pm Joe B:

lucky you Handy! i have to work, will miss it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:01pm mariano:

That's the thing, Hubig and D.Lightfoot: you could get a nice, huge apartment for really cheap. Everything was super cheap. Now it's half a million for a small shotgun duplex in the Marigny. The mid-90s were a real low point for the NOPD too, the corruption, the Antoinette Frank scandal, lots of other things. I'm pretty stoked to be back though, D. Lightfoot. A lot's changed but it's still New Orleans more so I think than NYC is still NYC.

Mr. Pumpy - NYC ended up being a real heartbreak especially towards the end, watching almost everything that made me want to live there disappearing and being replaced with yet another national chain store, ATM, etc.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:03pm Handy Haversack:

Ahhh, too bad, Joe B! I'm psyched for it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:03pm mariano:

North Louisiana is where you couldn't pay me to live, pure deep-red Bible Belt. I've spent far too many days of my life in Shreveport, where my mom ended up when she remarried.
Avatar 1:04pm D. Lightfoot:

Haven't been back since I left at the end of 2001. It must be a very different place by now.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:05pm Mr. Pumpy:

@steveo...do the D! Is it still bad? We would do avenue C in the 90s and it was brutal. My friend lived on B and it was pretty much fine. A lot of junkies, but it was civilized. The $WAN$ rehearsal space was right across the street from his apartment on B and 6th. I wish I realized it back then, but I didn't put 2 and 2 together until years later. I saw Michael Gira, Westberg, and Jarboe...probably Bill Rieflin too hanging out outside, but din't realize it at the time. Bummer. I may have been able to sit in on some jams. Hindsight and all...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:05pm Woo:

Listening.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:06pm Mr. Pumpy:

@jt...dang! Well that's no fun. Wit h the flavor goes the horrors, I suppose. It's a balancing act. I do prefer the pre-Giulliani Times Square, I gotta say. Like Mariano stated...Disney Land these days. Just not my scene.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:07pm David (in London):

@mariano - As Shreveport is the home of The Residents it has a special place in my heart. But sound like not having ever been there, perhaps I can keep it that way.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:07pm Mr. Pumpy:

@David...thanks for the Yokonalysis!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:08pm David (in London):

@Mr Pumpy, that would have been cool. Have you read Nick Soulsby's recent Swans bio? He covers that period in glorious cement-dust covered detail.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:08pm Cmurtha:

ya'll are making me jealous of these prices. I sometimes feel like there isn't a viable city left in America that's not getting gouged by gentrification at some level, though I can't complain since my rent is low in Columbus despite the tech-based housing bubble that is inflating prices here to insane amounts, no offense to Ohio but for the price some of these mooks are buying houses, might as well go live in a bigger city in another state.
Avatar 1:09pm D. Lightfoot:

Yes, North La. is a real hinterland. Some of it is third-world IMO. But the state has always had some of that flavor to it, always been a couple decades behind somehow, the way back to when Huey Long took office when there were only 600 miles of paved road in the whole state. When my fam moved there in 1983, Baton Rouge was a backwater. New Orleans was a backasswards city state infested with cockroaches and instiutional legthargy when I moved there in 1997(?).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:10pm Mr. Pumpy:

@mariano...I feel ya. I grew up hanging on the lower east side, hitting shows, record shopping, etc...now it's so antiseptic. It's just not my thing. I still hit the city for a lot of what it has to offer, but the excitement is largely gone for me.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:13pm David (in London):

So many cities seem unfortunately to be suffering from this blanding-out now. The centre of London has lost so many of things I used to love about it. Luckily many have managed to find little niches out in the outlying areas, but one wonders how long it will be before even those get swallowed up by big chain stores and 'stunning' blocks of way overpriced apartments. Sigh.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:13pm Mr. Pumpy:

@David...I haven't read that. I'll have to check it out. I have gotten more into them as the years go on. I'd love to read it as a fan and because I was so close to the space all the time. I probably even bullshitted with them because we would hang on the street a decent amount and hit the bodega that was adjacent to the rehearsal space. I know it was a band jamming out and I dug it, but as I said...I wasn't as in to them in the past, maybe a couple of 7" records...so I never figured out who I was seeing. Thanks for the tip on the book.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:14pm mariano:

I find myself very nostalgic for the 70s NO of my childhood, D. L.

David (in London) - oh, Shreveport has an outsize place on the map in terms of music history. The Residents are indeed originally from there (though they got the hell out pretty early, lol!), as was Leadbelly, and a few others I can't remember. The Louisiana Hayride was a very important venue for up-and-coming artists such as Elvis, Hank, Waylon, Johnny, etc. Boogie-woogie started there too, which of course had a tremendous influence on the direction rock took in the 60s and beyond. Like many places in the South, the music scene is really good. Some good food too, though it tends to be more standard Southern than the indescribably sublime Creole/Cajun cuisine in the southern part of the state.

D. Lightfoot: Yeah, I remember going with my folks up to S'port in the early 80s, and there were literally sharecropper shacks, no electricity or water, in the middle of cotton fields. Still in use, I mean. And we had a lot of trouble understanding the local dialect, they all sounded like Boomhauer from King of the Hill!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:17pm Mr. Pumpy:

@mariano...a city of Boomhauers? Dang. I tell you what, man. It just ain’t… ain’t no good.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:19pm David (in London):

@Mr Pumpy - It's a really terrific book. If it's not a massive and self-centred breach of accu etiquette, I reviewed it about 18 months ago when it came out, so here's the link (freq.org.uk...) Soulsby sent the review to Gira, and he seemed happy with it (!), so that was a win.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:20pm Woo:

Avatar 1:22pm northguineahills:

A lot of Sloan on wfmu in the last week!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:23pm David (in London):

@mariano - I've unfortunately never been to that part of the US, and I really must do for the all the reasons you mention there: music, food etc. Funny you mention being nostalgic for the 70s city of your childhood. I've been having similar feelings about London recently. I work with quite a few colleagues in their 20s, and they look at my askance when I tell them about how it was then. "You see that thronging hip spot full of chichi eating places and expensive boutiques? That use to be a chicken abattoir, with street drinkers downing methylated spirits outside around a bonfire." All true but I think they think I'm pulling their leg...
Avatar 1:26pm D. Lightfoot:

Bought my house where I now live for $22K, have put another $18–20K into in over the past 6 years or so. Fixer upper in the middle of nowhere is the way to go in post-prosperity America, IMO.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:28pm mariano:

Mr. Pumpy - King of the Hill takes place in northeast Texas, which is basically the same cultural area as Shreveport, which is much closer to Dallas than New Orleans. People there are Cowboys fans. Once on a visit to my mom I brought up a bunch of the south-LA goodies she missed, and quite a few of her friends from up there didn't want to touch the shrimp because they still had the heads on them!

I often think that I'd gladly trade in today's world and its problems for those of the 70s, David (in London).

A few years back I was surfing channels and one was playing "Mrs Brown You've Got a Lovely Daugher", which I had no idea was even a movie. Great opening track, "It's Nice to Be Up in the Morning". The film version has a trumpet solo I really love, but it's not on the single version.

Handy: one thing I'd never fault Shreveport for is music, must be something in that Red River water ;)

@David (in London) -- that was a really well done review. Thanks for sharing that!

I'm digging this limited yet about to explode distortion on the guitar on certain parts of this track. I have an old Fender Deluxe 85 guitar amp and It has a suppressor or limiter function. Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:59pm David (in London):

@John, I love the FMU accu for that reason. Because there are people from all over the world, at many different ages etc, there's such a potent hive mind that you can really learn things here.
Avatar 2:01pm Snoochienucci:

@David in London love that explanation, very true!
  2:01pm John from Florham park:

@DIl I agree and it is not all about music I feel like I am among people vehicle have a brain and. Don’t sound ignorant
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:02pm Mr. Pumpy:

@David...funny. The AC-30 is a stalwart, but things come along as time goes on. I get a headache when looking at amps. The market is just silly. I have my few faves...and may get something else if I start playing more. The AC-30 has been on my list..as has a Soldano SLO100. Alas, I have bills to pay. I am forunate to have a Marshall JCM900, which many people don't care for over it's sibling the 800 but it works well for me, and a SUNN Model T. That and a Roland JC120. Damn...geeking out here. I want more amps now!

I remember when a certain listener went berserk in a drunken and hate-filled rant on the accu a couple of years ago, it made me realise that almost NEVER happens. People here are generally respectful and thoughtful and there's a proper give-and-take. Makes it a nice place to hang out.
  2:06pm John from Florham park:

@David in London to go one step further wish the internet type people with this station would create a Facebook type of app, without the crap that Facebook has

Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:07pm Mr. Pumpy:

@johnk...definitely. Which makes purchasing a challenge.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:07pm David (in London):

@Mr Pumpy - Never apologise for geeking out over gear. You've made my mouth water with the possibilities. (Although so small, I bought a Pignose some years back, and I absolutely love it - what a great piece of kit).
  2:07pm John from Florham park:

@David in London is that listener still around and what show was it in?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:08pm David (in London):

@northguineahills - As it's you, I humbly withdraw.

it's this saturday, yes
  2:10pm John from Florham park:

@Snooch you heard right
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:10pm David (in London):

@John, I have very occasionally seen the same name used, but I don't know whether it's the same person or not (it's a one key-stroke symbol, so not impossible it's been used by more than one person). I can't remember which show it was. Could have been Wake and Bake, but I might be misremembering that. It was two or so years ago?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:10pm doctorjazz:

Avatar 2:13pm northguineahills:

@David: Phew! I almost had heart palpatations..

But seriously, the rare times we get trolls here, usually the dj bans them if there's no real coherent argument or the comment has nothing to do w/ the music or conversation. Ken is sometimes is a little ban-happy, but that's fine by me....
  2:13pm John from Florham park:

@Phillippe I think drinking and being on the accu is not a good combo

The Acu is an online oasis, can't think of anything really egregious that's happened while I've been signed on. I've certainly been wasted here many times, but I'm more of a good-time drunk than a political-rant, pick-a-fight drunk.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:19pm chris:

hi, Joe and folks. talk about drinking on the board, great drinking music in the set. damn work.

and i will admit i occasionally post quick little late-night/early-morning interjections (read, woot! and yeah!) when i'm, errr... elevated a bit.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:20pm Handy Haversack:

I have seen tempers get a little hotted up on the Techtonic board, I suppose. The temporally linear structure of the conversation makes it easier to ignore asshattery as long as it's not repeated.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:21pm Cmurtha:

I've gotten political ranty, though I like to imagine never in the "oh Christ no" kind of way. Have yet to get into a dreaded e-spat here.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:21pm Mr. Pumpy:

@David...oh...broad spectrum. I do anything from avant-garde to three chord punk to noise to well thought out prog. I guess the most produced pieces of those efforts fall into a guitar based rock type thing with a pretty open mind. I work with a partner most often, as in he and I do everything such as writing, performing, recording, mixing...everything but mastering as we don't have the knowhow for that...or the ear by the time we are that deep in the project. These days, on my own I am gearing up to move into a lot of electronic and modular synth type shit. I just meed to get some new pieces of gear and redo my space. You?
  2:21pm John from Florham park:

@Marino I never try to talk about politics here, it would just cause fights and I am sure there are trump fans who are on this because they dig the music, plus if it gets too heated Ken is gonna have to come down like a to of bricks on us, so I try avoid it, don’t know how it’s gonna be around election time

Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:27pm David (in London):

@Mr Pumpy. Blimey, that's a fairly broad range of genres. But good for you. Gear now is so amazing in quality that you can achieve professional quality recording in your own home these days. It's a far cry from the Tascam 4-tracks of yesteryear. My stuff is at the 'experimental' or 'avant garde' end of the spectrum I guess. We put out an album last year which did pretty well (by the standards of such niche stuff). WFMU played it plenty, which of course was especially nice.
  2:28pm spodiodi:

ooh! Xetas
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:28pm Handy Haversack:

Yeah, I've dug everything I have heard from Xetas, esp. when they were excited to be played on FMU.

Unlike a lot of internet-talky-things, I figure there's also a decent chance of running into many ACCU folks at shows or volunteering at the station. So I may as well conceal some of my more execrable traits as long as possible!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:29pm Mr. Pumpy:

@mariano...no joke. Probably a result of my being four beers deep right now and in dire need of reading glasses, I thought you wrote "fuck-a-pig-drunk" Ha! That would have been a whole other conversation. That, however, is DRUNK! I mean I've seen some swine that are real lookers...and often charming to boot...but, you didn't type that. Gave me a chuckle though when I realized I was mistaken.

and, "drunk on the accu" was Doug Schulkind's band's name in high school...
Avatar 2:34pm Joe B:

David, a little bit. regardign that, Palmer had some obscure band from circa 1966 but I figured it would be too deep being he had Vinegar Joe also

@Mr Pumpy I think there needs to be a large publicly-funded study conducted. On the surface that may seem like a waste, but if we don't have to read any more apologetic tweets, apologetic Facebook posts, and news stories about apologetic tweets and Facebook posts, the overall mood of the nation will be elevated, leading to increased productivity, an improved tax base, and a bump in the overall economy.

@Joe B - I always remember reading a comment from Elkie Brookes to the effect that if a gig had gone badly RP would be sat at the back of the van with a 'Nothing to do with me' look on his face. Great singer though, I've always loved him. He even managed to be great in the 80s, which was a colossal graveyard for many of his peers.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:39pm coelacanth∅:

some show hosts let it go on indefinitely. i think sometimes they're oblivious to the one person posting as 8 (ie) different people during 1 show -asking personal questions of people...or racists that are somehow not obviously racist to some folk...

I always feel bad when ACCUing and drinking if I accidentally "fall asleep" and don't thank the DJ for the show. I owe Marty McSorley for an excellent program Sat. night. But we wanted to check out RuPaul on SNL, and that did us in quickly.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:48pm David (in London):

@Joe B - I think The Power Station stuff is still a high point of 80s chart music. I like it then, and still do. RP even managed to look good in a shiny 80s suit. Great show today, too. Thanks man.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:50pm David (in London):

Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:51pm Mr. Pumpy:

As far as posting political stuff...I see it as a waste of time. I'm not going to change anyone's mind...and this medium leaves no room for nuance or anything. As someone posted earlier, this is an escape from that, and one of the few. I said it here before and I'll say it again. We need to stop hating on one another so much. Yup...I'm the peace and love guy! I'm pissed off about a lot, and think there are a lot of evil morons running around affecting our lives, but I don't think this is the place to discuss it because it will achieve nothing more than annoying some people and falsley vindicating others. I thin if anything, we can jive here and not worry about that trivial shite. Trivial in the sense that many of us are led to hate those that think differently from us. Back to the tunes...and peace...and love
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:51pm Handy Haversack:
